Mordheim

My Cult of the Possessed warband emerging from the caves beneath the city.

Recently, I have been getting into gaming regularly and prepping for games. I have built a small force of Chaos Possessed: A few beastmen, a magister picked from the drawer of half-finished stuff, some henchmen, mutants and two Daemons. The image above features the deamons and the first beastman painted. Also, the terrain is actual the one half of the Pilgrym gaming board, the old Botanicarium. A nice setting that works nicely as a Mordheim backdrop.

So to kickstart some more frequent posting I want to feature my Possessed Warband in the next posts...

Harlequin Solitaire

First model painted after the Pilgrym game.
All mood, all expression.
A Harlequin army in this style would be pretty impressive.

Pink Space Marine

By chance - the inks on the table, and a hunch to experiment - the Space Marine turned pink:

Pre-heresy Emperor Children or maybe another Chapter in that direction, featuring pink plate armour and golden suns as their heraldry. Not sure yet. But I am pretty happy with the model. A little less than 2 hours of work. Quick and fun. All done in one session. A pretty good hobby start for the new year...

Here is a studio style image with a few men for scale:
The pink plate was stipples over a zenith base spray (black spray from below, white from top creating instant pre-highlights). First a stipple of old trusty Elf Flesh from the hexagonal bottle, then pure white (WIP image underneath). Blister pack sponge work, nothing fancy. Over this the armour was washed with W&N artist ink Deep Red. From there I worked in the other details. Washed the deep creases of the armour while washing other areas, and carefully brushing on some thinned white highlights. The crazy thing about these inks is that they bleed a little though the highlights. Thus the white highlights on top are actually somewhat subtle because the seem to be blended in... I really like the overall effect using sponge followed by inks. Could work quite well on vehicles...

Bye 2015, Welcome 2016

Greetings 2016. Looking forward to everything. Also a goodbye to 2015, which to me was an exiting year in the hobby.

The picture here sums stuff up my current take on the hobby: Collaborative terrain-building. A marine construct fusing plastic bits from both the past and present. And a pitch black doorway into the unknown.

Harlequin Shadowseer

My travellings into the magical domain of the Eldar race took off in Spring when I joined the Invitational at the Iron Sleet blog back in Spring. Now I have worked on, developing the language of this sinister and mysterious race further. Fittingly, my recent Harlequin model, the Shadowseer, was posted on the Iron Sleet earlier today. The Iron Sleet crew have been doing Eldar interpretations the past month, so obviously the inspiration has been flowing back and forth bringing drive and enthusiasm. Thanks. And let's create some more!

Henchman painted - and exploring

I painted this henchman really fast the other night and did a simple photo-setup last night. The image came out too dark, but a quick auto-contrast sloved this one easily. Fun to paint, not perfect to technical standards, but gritty and dark. I need to do more of these fast-paced models.

Painting the model I was reminded og the strong but simple colour schemes that Mike Anderson used to do all the time. He has done some awsome models with a subtle grey/black being the main part of the palette.

Interview and a Scion Captain

A comment to go with the picture first: A Scion Captain that I have worked on over about a months time. I put him into some terrain to get nice field-action feeling in the photo. Regarding the Scion box the current score is 2 down, 3 to go. And I also got myself some Eldar the other week... Oh well...

Onto the interview part of the topic headline. Tyler of Mengel Miniatures wrote me about 3 months ago if I would do an interview. The interview was published on his website last week and I really think he put down some good questions. So if you want to have a read, then head over to Tyler's website: Mengel Miniatures.

2nd Daemonette

Another Daemonette finished. Quick paintjob, quick photo-shoot:

Sometimes it is amazing how much you can get done in half an evening. The model was about half finished, and taking to time to get it to the end was just great. I have got another model at the same mid-stage ready for next week...

Cropped photo - a merchant

Just took a quick picture of this guy the other day. Painted most of him over winther, but I actually still need to give him a base. Thus - for photography - I chose a scenic setting and cropped the image rather than showing the full (unfinished) figure on traditional white or blue/white backdrop. But somehow I actually quite like these cropped images - you kind of get a little closer to the character, than on the classic studio-images.

WIP #1: mid-80s Orc Leader

Still a bit of work left on the base, so I am not revealing the model in a clear photo.
Moody and with a bounch of old hang-outs in the background instead:

However, I ought to have time to finish the base tomorrow evning. And then there are a few touch ups.
Proper photos will come later, but I hope to show a single snap-shot of the finished dude sometime Monday evening. If the plan works out.

Victor Bela, muscle, and sniper

A Black and white image of Velk's interrogator, Victor Bela, in company of two of the retinue's henchmen:

Then an image of the three lined up for a quick photograph:

And last: A close up snap-shot of the muscle guy during one the INQvitational 2013 games that were played in Warhammer World last weekend:

Somehow I find that I like the various ways that the brute comes through visually. In the black and white image the black eyes look quite sinister and the way he towers behind Bela also adds to the appearence. In the line up the colours comes though nicely and you can enjoy the strong red, the weathered armour, and the dust and dirt worked into both base and the lower part of the model. Finally, on the action-shot the angle of photography and the close-cropped image gives a dramatic touch - I could believe he is has been falling back from heavy enemy fire and now with his back against the wall he will either make it or fall. You can just imaging the bullets hammering into the beached red of the wall. But also, miniaturepainting-wise, you get so close to the model that you for instance can see the quite simple way the white has been painted. You see the pinks, reds, and touches of ochre that makes up the flesh tones, and you see the traces of drybrushing on the base.

Scribe

Painted, photographed, photoshopped (slightly). Another go at creating really worn and old-looking clothes.

Mordheim gangers

Remember Mordheim? Released in 1999. Dark and sinister. A black rulesbook. And fantastic illustrations.

I painted these models back in 2002 or so for a few games of Mordheim. Nice and moody models.

Light for shooting #2

Last night I took the time to finish these two 40K street lamps. A little digital editing and they look nice and moody. Actually, the little terrain-pieces were already moody, but for a picture it is nice to add what you can to enhance the expression.

I still like the idea of using stuff like this to add odds to gaming. Got to do some gaming to try that out first, I suppose.

Grey Knight - paint phase #2

A moody picture of the miniature. Need to add a little detail-work, but I am actually quite happy with the way he has turned out so far. I still have to get some more terrain for photos sorted. Backdrop is a detail from a half finished canvas painting from early Spring.

Thaddeus Velk unleashed...

Settled on the name and put in the last hour of painting tonight. Proper dark moody pictures for a sinister villain-type character.

Studio style pictures when I find the time and interest...

Servo Skull Collector - finished

Finished the Servo Skull Collector tonight. A fun and hectic 3 hours painting session.

Yesterday I decided to persue a slightly monocrome look by aiming to work yellow into most parts of the model. Thus I had to change to shield which I had just enjoyed painting wiht the white/red pattern of checks... But I am quite pleased with the new look. I haven't painted a lots of models using a monocrome palette so this was both fun and challenging.

Servo Skull Collector, paint phase #3

A moody shot to follow the 3rd painting session.
I have started on the checked shield and also most of the basic work on the cloak is done.
The terrain setting is the classic 40K buildings from the 1998-boxed set with some quick airbrush action and drybrushing. The bright red backdrop is painted by my youngest daughter.

Paint phase #2 on the daemonhost + mood photography

More work down on the daemonhost. Painted the flesh using two shades of pink, white, and some inks. This is a seriously big figure with a lot of flesh - took some time to do - but it was fun to explore building the colours over the black/white-zenith undercoat. The black primer shading shows effectively through adding a nice sinister grey shade in a few places. But first some moody images of the figure. The lower half is still to be finished but with some cropping we still get some nice shots...
