Common kingfisher

The common kingfisher, also known as Eurasian kingfisher, is a small bird with blue and orange feathers and a long bill. It feeds mainly on fish, caught by diving. The bird has a special visual adoption that enable it to see under water. The bird migrates from areas where rivers freeze in winter.

European bee-eater

A wonderful postcard of a European bee-eater sent to me from Poland. The photo really explains the bird's name! The diet of these birds is 69%-82% bees, however they eat less than 1% of the bee population in the area. One bird can eat up to 250 bees a day.

I love illustrations of animals and this work by Robin Carter is so beautiful! The postcard shows a bunch of kind penguins. The diet of these penguins mostly consists mostly of small fish and squid.

The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean. The main islands are about 300 miles of the southern coast of Patagonia. The majority of Falkland inhabitants are of Welsh and Scottish ancestry.

Sisserou parrots/Amazonki cesarskie

Postcard showing two sesserou parrots which can only be found in Dominica. The bird is considered the national bird of the Commonwealth of Dominica and is presented on the flag and the coat of arms.

Christopher Columbus named the island after the day of the week on which he spotted the island - dies Dominica in Latin. Dominica is the youngest island in the Caribbean, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity. The world's second largest got spring Boiling Lake is located in Dominica.

The lizard Vincent's Least Gecko is found in the Caribbean islands of Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent.

Montserrat, nowe terytorium/new territory

Przepiękna kartka z antylskim kolibrem grzebieniastym, w dodatku z mojego nowego terytorium! Tym ptaszkom można przyjrzeć się tylko na zdjęciach lub takich ilustracjach. Można je oczywiście zobaczyć w ogrodach przy poidełkach z wodą, ale latają tak szybko, że oprócz koloru nic nie widać.

An amazing postcard with a antillean crested hummingbird, from one of my missing territories! It's really hard to see any details of these tiny birds when they fly around flowers or water dispensers so a picture or an illustration is the chance to have a good look at them. Before I didn't know they have a crest! They fly really fast, they only things I noticed were  their colours: black and dark green.

Kookaburra

Na moje nie eksperckie oko jest to kukabura chichotliwa (ładna nazwa, prawda?). Jest to ptak z rodziny zimorodkowatych pochodzący ze wschodniej Australii. Gatunek został również introdukowany również na wschodzie kontynentu, w Tasmanii oraz Nowej Zelandii. Ptaki te mogą osiągać nawet 45cm. Kukaburę widziałam na żywo tylko raz, w zoo w Toronto, piękne ptaszysko, ale nie chciało się 'śmiać', więc musiałam poszukać sobie jakiegoś filmiku na youtube'ie i faktycznie kukabura wygląda jakby pękała ze śmiechu ;)

I am not entirely sure but I think this is laughing kookaburra, that's a nice name, isn't it? It's a bird from the kingfisher family, native to eastern Australia. The species was introduced in the western part of the continent, in Tasmania and also in New Zealand. Kookaburras can be even 45cm in length.

Koliberek

Prześliczna kartka z kolibrem z wymiany z Celestynem. Kolibry są ptakami Nowego Świata, są one jednymi z najmniejszych ptaszków, potrafią latać do tyłu i do góry nogami. W ogrodzie przy poprzednim wynajmowanym mieszkaniu miałam przyjemność zaobserwować kolibry, które korzystały z wywieszonego poidełka. Latają niestety tak szybko, że szczegółów raczej się nie zobaczy.

A lovely hummingbird postcard from Celestyn. Hummingbirds are New World birds, they are among the smallest birds. They can fly backward and upside down. In the garden next to my previous apartment I could watch hummingbirds drinking from the water dispenser. Unfortunately they fly too fast to see any details.

My first postcard from Belize, swap with Lando. This beautiful bird, rainbow-billed toucan, inhabits Latin America and is the national bird of Belize. Its diet consist mainly of fruit.

Belize znajduje się w północnej częsci Ameryki Centralnej, oficjalnym językiem kraju jest angielski.

Belize is located on the northeastern coast of Central America, the national language in Belize in English.

Penguins from Tristan da Cunha

Thank you Ruben for this great postcard from remote island of Tristan da Cunha!

Lovely postcard showing a group of rockhopper penguins. The penguins were transported to Tristan de Cunha in 2011 for cleaning after a freighter had run aground and tons of crude oil had spilt into the ocean. The penguins jump over boulder or across cracks, hence their common name is rockhopper.

Tristan da Cunha is a part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Tristan is also the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world.

Pūkeko

Great postcard from Susan, thanks a lot!!

Pūkeko is a common name derived from the Māori language for the purple swamphen of New Zealand. These birds are also find in Australia. Pūkeko is protected but may be hunted in open season in some areas. Although a reluctant flyer, the Pūkeko is a fast runner and is common sight throughout the country's wet land and waterways.
