DreadTober 2019 Week 4 - To Done!

Got all the little final detailing done on the Contemptor Achillus over the weekend, just in time to hit the finish line for DreadTober! Without further ado, some pics!

All in all a rather fun dreadnought to paint up, and has me rather excited to get back to the rest of the Custodes in the force as a change of pace from all the Necromunda going on behind the scenes. Reminds me, I gotta get all the pics from last session sorted out and posted...

Looking forward to seeing all the other awesome entries for this year's DreadTober? Head on over and check 'em out at https://dreadtober.blogspot.com/ - The final post for this year goes up on the 31st!

DreadTober 2019 Week 3 - Nearing the finish line!

DreadTober stomps ever onward, with big metal feet! Tons of great progress from the various participants to be seen at the main DreadTober blog - Go check 'em out!

While I've been beavering away on more Necromunda behind the scenes, I have gotten quite a bit of work done on the Contemptor Achillus, and it's almost complete (and essentially table ready now)!

Did some more targeted shading and highlights on the gold, cleaned up the greaves and shoulders, and laid in the iron/steel. Starting to look good now!

There's still some more work to be done here and there - Taking photos of your models always shows things that the naked eye misses. That said, it should be done in plenty of time for the end of the month!

DreadTober Week 1 - Legio Custodes Contemptor-Achillus Built!

It is now October 1st, which means it's time for...

http://dreadtober.blogspot.com/

DreadTober! As usual it's time to dive in and build out some big stompy death machines - If you're interested in participating, click the banner above to be taken to the DreadTober blog and sign up for the fun!

I am slowly working towards a Legio Custodes force for a Burning of Prospero game being organized for Adepticon 2020 (so I have some time), so I figured now was a good time to get cracking on the Contemptor-Achillus that is part of the force!

Like all of Forge World's contemptors, the model has a metric ton of articulation points, and was a joy to build! Rather happy with how the arms holding the glaive turned out, though there was more than a little swearing while attempting to line everything up in a realistic manner. Rather looking forward to getting some paint on it over the next few weeks!

Dreadtober 2018 - House Vyronii Armigers livery on!

Dreadtober is upon us, which means it's time to paint some giant stompy death machines! None of my current Heresy projects include any dreadnoughts so instead I'm working up a quartet of Armigers to mill about the feet of the Knight Lancer I'd done a few months back. It's been a rough week recently so I've been remiss on getting stuff posted and updated on the Dreadtober page but the always awesome Todd Sherman has been keeping a hand on the rudder. Big thanks to him for keeping the ball rolling in my absence!

To begin with all the metal areas were given a pass with Vallejo Gunmetal, drybrushed with Chainmail, then given an Army Painter Strong Tone wash, which gives it an oily, dirty metal look.

Next up was blocking in the House Vyronii livery, which is an emerald green and white. I didn't want to paint each one identically, so they each got a bit of a half-and-half pattern that ties them together color-wise but keeps them individualist which I think suits the knightly order vibe.

Next up was the gold trim and cleanup of the areas where the livery got out of hand. They're starting to come together nicely! Now on to all the fiddly detail work and basing prior to the initial sealant pass step. Once that's done I can do the waterslides and weathering - So far, so good!

Dreadtober 2018!

It's almost that time of year again, when monstrous mechanical machines make much mayhem! That's right, it's time for...

I'll be helping out the inestimable Todd Sherman from Sincain40k in helping collate all the entries for this year's celebration of all things stompy! Head on over to dreadtober.blogspot.com and sign up - We'll be collection folks pictures and showing off all the awesome stuff you folks come up with over the month of October. It's not limited to just Dreadnoughts, of course - any big stompy machine is welcome! In point of fact, I don't personally have any Dreads in any of my current projects, so will instead be working on a group of Armigers that have been languishing on the painting desk for months. I always like these kinds of events as a goad to get some long-overdue project into (and subsequently off of) the painting queue!

It's the most Dread-full time of the year! Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

Dreadtober 2017 - Osiron Dreadnought Complete!

Made the push over the last couple days to finish off the Osiron dreadnought, as having the deadline for Dreadtober bearing down on me got me motivated!

The dread was well past the halfway mark as of the last update, so it was mostly the addition of little details and cleanup here and there. Laying in the colors on the base really helped bring the model into focus!

The addition of the blue and green works well from a color theory standpoint, but boy am I weary of painting Thousand Sons - They're still my favorite legion, but let's just say I'm not ready to do a fifth iteration of the army quiiiiiite yet. Back to the Sons of Horus, and soon a foray back to the namesake of the blog as well!

Dreadtober 2017 - Osiron Dreadnought painting continues to continue...

A couple weeks in to October and I haven't gotten as much done on the Osiron as I probably should - Deadline is bearing down on us! That said, there was a little forward progress and I got the force blade greened up and ready for detailing. Don't forget to check out http://dreadtober.blogspot.com/ for more dread-y goodness!

Laid in a couple more colors as well, but nothing worth documenting. I will say that painting this guy has been challenging, I really have army fatigue with the Thousand Sons, and the Sons of Horus have been way more exciting to paint. A whole mess of pics of the boys in green coming soon!

Dreadtober 2017 - Osiron Dreadnought painting continues...

Another quick hit today, while the Sons of Horus continue apace I switched gears briefly and added the gold and expanded on the white trim undercoat on the Osiron when those colors came up in the hopper.

There are dozens of other awesome dreadnoughts getting worked on this month - definitely worth checking them out! Here's the link to the challenge tracker blog: https://dreadtober.blogspot.co.uk/p/dreadtober-2017.html

Behind the scenes the Sons of Horus are nearing completion, pics to follow soon!

Dreadtober 2017 - Back to the old scheme

Just a quick hit today - As the current Thousand Sons force hasn't been sold yet I figured I ought to go ahead and match the Osiron dread to the old paint scheme so I can sell them all on as matching lots. Dragged out the gold and clear red and got down to it!

Nothing super fancy quite yet, got the basic red on, and started by picking out all the areas intended to be white with a medium grey color. Against the reds of the armor even this color ends up looking almost white, and means that I can work up with a few lighter greys to give it depth and highlight. Once that's done I'll move on to the gold, which on this model will be a significant amount of real estate!

Dreadtober 2017 - The dreadnoughtening!

It's that time of year again! Dreadtober 2017 is shaping up to be a big one - Hobbyist extraordinaire and all around fine fellow Todd Sherman has taken up the gauntlet to help run this years festivities, may the Emperor take mercy upon him!

https://dreadtober.blogspot.co.uk/

Naturally I didn't think my cunning plan all the way through and just days before the event was to begin I finished up the Sons of Horus dreadnought I'd been working on. Can't claim that as a success, so I cast my eye across the shelves and it settled on one of the leftover models from the recent Thousand Sons force that had never gotten beyond the build stage.

The beautiful Osiron dread never quite fit into the force as by the time I'd settled on the Orbital Assault list, the Dreadnought Drop Pod had gone out of production on the FW site and there's been little to no word of its return. Looks like we have our dread to work on for Dreadtober!

Todd has set up a blog to help track all the awesomeness at https://dreadtober.blogspot.co.uk/ - go check it out, and by all means if you have a dread you've been wanting to finish (or dread finishing) join in the fun!
