Thinking In Structure is the personal website of Paul Higham. I write essays on mathematics, numeration systems, physics, economics, artificial intelligence, history and culture, with a focus on the structural ideas that connect seemingly unrelated fields. Alongside long-form essays, the site hosts original research on positive linear recurrence (PLRS) numeration systems, carry propagation, inverse reconstruction, and generalized Zeckendorf representations.
Research
Paper XI identifies an exact normal form for the remaining nonnegative positionality problem and develops a structural theory of the resulting viability dynamics. It proves an effective equivalence between nonnegative positionality for infinite regular languages and nontermination of proper homogeneous balance loops.
A proper homogeneous balance loop has the form
Bλn = Aλn+1, λn ∈ ℕr,
with a fixed initial vector and with every source column of A nonzero. The forward reduction starts from the periodic descriptor relation of Paper X, normalizes unused weight phases, proves uniform exponential bounds, isolates the finite set of genuinely nonnegative preperiod completions, and converts the resulting nonnegative transition relation into a finitely generated affine monoid. A Hilbert basis gives finite transition generators, while a budget coordinate eliminates zero-source generators and produces a proper system with a single fixed start.
The reverse reduction is constructive. Paper XI builds, from any proper homogeneous balance loop, an infinite regular language whose genealogical rank admits nonnegative integer positional weights if and only if the loop has an infinite trajectory. Radix filler languages force the exponential baseline, while repeated three-word lexicographic equality gadgets impose the rows of the balance equation exactly.
Passing from coefficient vectors to physical states gives a descending viability filtration. Every finite-horizon viable set is an effectively computable affine semigroup. Infinite viability is equivalent to viability at every finite horizon, so every negative instance has a finite obstruction. Consequently, regular-ANS non-positionality is recursively enumerable and regular-ANS positionality lies in Π01.
In one physical dimension, Paper XI derives an autonomous recurrence for the gcd of the viability semigroups. Proportional systems are governed by explicit divisibility growth, while nonproportional systems have an eventually stable viability lattice. In the terminating nonproportional regime, characterized exactly by 0 < bi < ai for every generator, the least positive viable state and the conductor both grow on the same exponential scale.
For two generators, the late viability filtration admits a sharper classification. After normalization by the stabilized gcd, it becomes an exact finite union of arithmetic tails. Their thresholds evolve through a finite phase map with bounded periodic affine corrections, producing a finite normalized asymptotic limit cycle.
This finite-channel purification fails already for three generators. For the explicit system
A = (2, 6, 8), B = (1, 1, 1),
the normalized viable states at horizon n consist of 0, the isolated boundary point 2n, and every integer from 2n + 2 onward. Thus a single hole travels indefinitely with the efficient boundary. This shows that higher factorization dimension introduces genuinely new arithmetic obstructions even when the bulk transition semigroup is eventually saturated.
The programme builds on generalized Zeckendorf theory and on the extensive literature concerning linear and abstract numeration systems, greedy representations, normalization, automata, odometers, ordered trees, prefix codes, carry propagation and positionality developed by Christiane Frougny, Valérie Berthé, Michel Rigo, Jacques Sakarovitch, Koloğlu, Kopp, Miller, Wang and others.
Papers I–XI, together with companion Papers IVa–IVd, form the current fifteen-paper Numeration and Positionality Research Programme. Papers I–IVd develop the canonical-PLRS structural and successor-dynamics theory; Papers V–VII develop distributional and inverse reconstruction beyond PLRS; and Papers VIII–XI form the positionality strand, progressing from census-positional threshold languages to intrinsic affine positionality, affine decidability for arbitrary regular abstract numeration systems, and finally an exact nonnegative balance-loop normal form, affine-semigroup viability theory and low-dimensional classification.
