Happy New Year, from the Streets of New York

True to Daily Photo Blog fashion, the theme day for every New Year's Day is to post the best photo from the previous year.

The above photo was taken last Spring in the Financial District of Manhattan, one of New York City's oldest neighborhoods. Some of the streets are twisty turny and paved with cobblestones. The Ulysses Folk House features pub fare and live bands.

I was also very lucky because it had just rained. In most movies and commercials, they hose down the street to create an additional reflective surface. Some of the best times for taking photos are after rainfall.

You can just imagine what Old New York used to look like, when it was known more as a port city. I'm sure this street has been used as a backdrop in many films and photoshoots.

I had a devil of a time choosing an image to post. What makes a photo 'best', anyway? For me, the photo had to be visually appealing but it had to convey a sense of what New York is.

CPD Theme Day - The Best of 2008

Selecting a 'best' photo for the year was very difficult. Mark prefers this black and white shot of a crowd, where everyone is looking in different directions.

I share Mark's preference for candids - stolen moments on the subway, on the streets. There were also scenic photos of the city and its buildings.

This month's theme is Books. I took the above photo in a Korean bookstore, where books about Obama, McCain and the current economic crisis have been translated into Korean.

I'd love to know what people did for Halloween?

Last night I walked by tons of people in costume - kids, adults and dogs. In the city people wander the street and visit delis and other stores for candy.

Mark and I didn't have any trick-or-treaters by. It depends on the apartment building, whether kids will trick-or-treat among the apartments. For some reason, even though there are some kids in our building, they keep to themselves.

Next year, when Rupert, our Boston Terrier puppy, is bigger, we'll dress him up. I think a bumble bee costume would be adorable.

CDP Theme Day - Lines

Photo by myself earlier this year at the Shake Shack, a popular eatery in Madison Square Park, around 23rd Street and 5th Avenue. The line for thick shakes and hot dogs wraps around the park.

If you spend any time at all in New York, you will stand on line.

No, not 'in line', but 'on it', on line.

The distinction can be confusing, now that being 'online' means tapping into the internet. But there you go. We New Yorkers have our little oddities.

When I first moved to New York, the term bothered me. What is being 'on line', anyhow? You are not on a line. You're standing in a line, for goodness sake.

Over time, I've come to accept the term for what it is - an understanding among us, like a code word or secret handshake. This is what we do, we crazed people who will brave extreme weather for a hot dog or a Barney's sample sale.

And this is how we say it.

CDP Theme Day - Sister Cities

Nope, this isn't a bridge in New York. It's actually a scene from Budapest.

The monthly Theme Day among the daily photo blogs this month is 'Sister Cities'. Blogs were encouraged to post a photo of their sister city, by either visiting the other city or swapping photos with another Daily Photo site.

Zsolt, of Budapest Daily Photo, took the above photo of the gorgeously festooned Chain Bridge, a well-known suspension bridge in Budapest.

Budapest is one of New York's several sister cities (our other sister cities include Tokyo, Beijing, Cairo, Madrid, Rome, Jerusalem and Johannesburg). Zsolt had suggested to swap photos of bridges, so I sent him a photo of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Our photos are remarkably similar. Though my photograph was taken in the morning and Zsolt's at night, both images are focused on one of the bridges' piers, and both show a part of the city beyond.

I have yet to visit Budapest, and hope to someday. I imagine a cosmopolitan city of great culture, history and people.

CDP Theme Day - Metal

Photo by myself of the large metal globe sculpture at Columbus Circle, at 59th Street and Columbus Avenue.

This sparkling sculpture is at least 30 feet wide and is held above the ground by one big, chrome column. All around, people are rushing by to board the subway, tour the fancy shops at the Time Warner Center and saunter in Central Park.

The above photo was inspired by this month's Theme Day, held by the City Daily Photo site. Blogs all over the world are also showing photos featuring the theme metal, today.

There is a lot going on right now.

Coworkers and friends are changing jobs, even in this uncertain market. Construction in the city is going at a mad hum.

In the building where my main project is situated, a brand new condo building, there are 90 renovations going on. That's nine-zero projects that are starting up, in full gear, or wrapping up.

You wouldn't think there's a real estate crisis going on.
