Turn your Facebook Profile into a Virtual Museum

with 0 comments

Intel’s Museum of Me is a brilliant online app that turns your Facebook profile into a virtual museum with the click of a button.

Simply authorize the Museum of Me app to access your Facebook profile and it will pull your photographs, pictures of friends you frequently interact with, your location and other data that you may have shared on Facebook and turns everything into an impressive animated movie.

This is much like taking a walking tour of a virtual museum where all the rooms and galleries display exhibits that are you own.

If you have a Facebook profile, this is something you should not miss.

Disable Theater Effect of Facebook Photos on Any Browser

with 0 comments

Recently, Facebook added Ajax based Theater Effect on photos to show them (photo viewer) in a new style. The style is similar to the Flickr slideshow but there are many people who still wants to browse photos in old style on Facebook. If you are one of them, then here are few ways to disable Facebook photo Theater Effect or Viewer.
Facebook Photo with Theater Effect i.e. on Theater Viewer
Facebook Photo on Old Viewer

How to disable Facebook Photos Theater Viewer

1. Remove &theater from URL – Once you click on a photo on Facebook, a new page will open where you can see &theater in the URL i.e. web address. Just remove that part from the URL and hit enter. You can now see the old Facebook photo viewer.
2. Hit F5 to Refresh the Facebook page – Very simple technique. Once the photo is opened in theater viewer, hit F5 on your keyboard. The page will load and will open the photo in old viewer.
3. Use Firefox Userscript – Mozilla Firefox users are having benefits of add-ons. InstallGreasemonkey add-on on the browser and then install this Userscript. You will not see the new theater viewer while opening photos / pictures on Facebook.
4. Google Chrome Extension – Google Chrome browser extension installation is very easy task. Install this extension on your Chrome browser to disable theater effect or viewer.
5. Another Chrome Extension – Chrome is having one more extension for this purpose. In case the above extension is not working, you can try this one.
First 2 tips will work on any browser as they are not browser dependent that means you can disable the theater effect on Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera etc. as well. Rest 3 are for Firefox and Google Chrome users.
If you are using any other technique to disable the effect or this new viewer on Facebook for pictures, then share that through comments.

find the location of your facebook friends

with 0 comments
Facebook being the largest network of recent times, every thing that happens around Facebook gets going. So if you have some time to waste check out the Facebook apps that can create a friend map with your Facebook contacts.

My Friend Map is a Facebook app that lets you create a map which will show the the location of your Facebook friends a world map and will link to your location as well. You can see a nice graphic view of your connections across the globe. Hovering your mouse over the dots will show the names and images of your friends from that location.

Another much applauded Google Maps mashup to map your Facebook friends is Where My Friends Be. The tool creates anchors for all your Facebook friends on Google maps. Just like My Friend Map, you can see the names of your Facebook friends from that location.

Creating maps with your Facebook friends is quite a fun way to have a look at your Facebook influence. However, seeing a heat map will help you analyze areas across the world map with maximum density of Facebook friends. Quite a time waster, well in an interesting way. Density is one such app that could do the miracle for you. You also get to control the map settings by using the Heatmap Control Panel. Also there is an option you can use to watch the map full-screen.
Do you found this tool useful? Let us know via comments. Also, let us know if you know of any such Facebook friend map creating apps.

Happy Birthday Facebook

with 0 comments
From founder Mark Zuckerberg’s dorm room at Harvard to movie theaters across the US to the cover of TIME magazine to the fingertips of protestors in Cairo, Facebook has probably had more influence over our day to day lives than any other startup this decade.

To celebrate its seven years of incredible growth, the company has put up a custom candle graphic up on its Facebook wall, with the message, “To the 1.5 million of you who share our birthday today – Happy Birthday!” The image has received over 8,000 comments and 48,558 ”Likes” thus far.

According to reports the company is nearing a 600 million user milestone, and that “1.5 million of you who share …” statement is conspicuously an order of magnitude less than if applied to the total world population (6.9 billion), so it must somehow relate to the Facebook population itself. If you assume that birthdays are evenly distributed, the 1.5 million number times the 365 days in a year would mean that Facebook has around 548 million users. But birthdays are not evenly distributed, and February tends to be a below average month in terms of birth distribution.

Of course 548 million is an underestimate, as it’s also possible that the 1.5 million here is just the number of users who have chosen to specify the specific February 4th birthday to Facebook, and the unspecifieds don’t get counted. I’ve emailed almost everyone at Facebook trying to get the actual methodology and received this response …

“As we turn seven, we’d like to thank everyone who uses Facebook in unique ways around the world, ways in which we never could’ve imagined, and for continuing to inspire us to provide a service that makes it easy for people to connect with the things and people they care about. We also wish the more than 1.5 million people who share our birthday, February 4, a very happy birthday.”
Guess we’ll have to wait until someone fesses up. In the meantime: Most recently the company was in the spotlight for plans to make Facebook Credits the primary form of in-game currency by July and also for being a tool facilitating communication between anti-Mubarak protestors in Egypt. Facebook is valued at over $50 billion dollars, or priceless.

Your Facebook Friends as CAPTCHAs

with 0 comments
Web applications often use CAPTCHAs to ensure that real human beings and not bots are using the system. These CAPTCHAs are mostly a combination of words that are distorted enough so that only human eyes can read and solve them.
Facebook is however taking a more social approach to CATCHA solving.

Traditional CAPTCHAs are often hard to solve and therefore Facebook is experimenting with social authentication where you don’t have to recognize letters but images - they’ll show you a few pictures of your friends and ask you to name the person in those photos.
