Buccella dynastes

Also known as Masdevallia dynastes, this small species is from Ecuador.  The flowers are 2 cm from end to end and the plant 10 cm tall.  It blooms faithfully late winter or spring, but seems to prefer being mounted since the plant tends to grow up out of a pot.  It is said to be temperature tolerant but my plant is grown with other cool-temperature orchids.

Buccella dynastes

Also and perhaps better known as Masdevallia dynastes, this small species is from Ecuador.  The plant is 10 cm tall and the flowers 2 cm.  The plant tends to have a climbing habit, but I grow it in a small net pot in live sphagnum moss.  It is supposed to be temperature tolerant, but I grow it with other cool-temperature species.  The oddly shaped and colored flowers are produced during the winter.

Buccella dynastes

Bucella is another genus that has been recently separated from Masdevallia (2006), though the name certainly has not taken hold and many still refer to this plant as Masdevallia dynastes.  It is from Ecuador and is supposed to be somewhat temperature tolerant.  It is one of the smaller "Masdevallias," about 10 cm tall with upright flower spikes that are about as long as the leaves.  The flowers themselves are 1 cm in size.

Buccella molossoides 'Owen' CHM/AOS

Buccella molossoides, or Masdevallia molossoides is a tiny plant with 3 cm leaves and flowers that are a little over 1 cm long.  It must be reasonably attractive, however, since my plant was awarded a Certificate of Horticultural Merit of 83 points by the American Orchid Society at the recent Northwest OS Show in Shoreline, Washington.  The species is from Costa Rica and Panama and is considered to be one of the more temperature-tolerant Masdevallias.  As can be seen from the pictures, the flowers' color and shape are rather hard to describe.  The plant blooms profusely for me, but was rather difficult to establish.  I grow it in live sphagnum in a small net pot, but perhaps it would do better mounted.
