Accidentally Like a Martyr (SOTD)

 This just in, The War on Drugs released a cover of a legendary song by Warren Zevon, Accidentally Like a Martyr, so I have to post this as the song of the day, To-Day.  Its from their new live album,  DRUGS LIVE which will be released on Nov. 20.  Article in Pitchfork about this, here. 

The Warren Zevon iconic song was first published on his 1978 album Excitable Boy. Here is the original version.

South of Heaven, West of Hell (2000)

A one-off, totally lost in the woods of movieland, and seeing it after 20 years after its release, with fear and anguish :), and wow, I've been mesmerised. An anti-western, or Revisionist western, that today is a genre of its own, and brought us the most nihilistic movies I fave but nobody gave a damn, at least box office wise, and mostly the critics spat on it. This one was called a shit sandwich and worse. Now really, have you seen Straight to Hell with The Clash and 'em acolytes, so that was fun and this is hell ? C'mon folks..

.Welcome to South of Heaven , that equals Hell.  As if the pun was not enough the day-bread title goes on- West of Hell ! Texas border, that is !
It's the only film country legend singer (and part time actor) Dwight Yoakam wrote (co-wrote), produced and directed. And he was the lead, which might be the main problem, cos he ain't neither Steve McQueen, neither Kevin Costner. So, yeh, but what, this is his madness, ok ? He put all his money into his passion project, selling his Malibu house and later on declaring total bankrupcy...
The film happens on the day before Christmas 1907  in a village next to the Mexican border, where people can watch the first western, The Great Train Robbery, (from 1903, by Edwin Porter-maybe also a nod to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid's opening), and then goes into 1908 even closer to the border, in the line of it quite so (no walls  by then :). It's more like an alegory of death and living dead, in the vein of Pale Rider, High Planes Drifter anti-hero, who might or might not be alive/ dead.
Same in the genre- Dead Man, from which cult scene by the bonfire i think inspired this one ! These days a flick like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robet Ford (see here my review with more about revisionist westerns) and most recently The Sisters Brothers can get away with anything, but the roots on this are more like Peckinpah's Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, more to The Missouri Breaks and Get South, Posse or The Great Norfield Minesotta Raid.  Remember it all goes down to McCabe and Mrs. Miller after all, and to the anarchy of now so-called punk western, aka the spaghetti western from late 60's (did I say nihilism, I wrote the word in the above paragraph).

Now lookie here at the cast: Bo Hopkins, Luke Askew, Peter Fonda, his daughter Bridget, Billy Bob,  (yes,Thornton, with a long blonde hair wig), Vince Vaughan as his baddiest !, Mr. Pee Wee aka Paul Rubens as Arvid, Bud Cort !,Joe Ely ! Matt Clark ! Scott Wilson ! Michael Jeter (a riot!!)  and vetran Noble Willingham in a part that is totally Jack Nance's David Lynch.  Actually Lynch's name has been more than mentioned in regards of this movie !
***and if that wasn't enough, one far out cameo-Warren Zevon, as mr. Babcock !!!, he's there for ten minutes and doesn't say a word, except on his exit, two words -2- nicht drei, zwei !!!, <Good Night !> Warren was already ill at the time, you can se it on his face, and I guess he's here because of Billy Bob (yes, Thornton), keep in mind this is one single shot for Warren in a feature film !!!
BTW- Dwight looks like Tom Petty...

The soundtrack- the piano on repeat reminds me of something, Zevon-like, or more like The Band

can't be rated, I've seen it from 1 to 10 on imdb, i think its a real curio an acquired taste,                     I'd give it an 8 tho, or rather a 7  that is a *** 1/2 !

I listened to a lot of blues this past year (well, some of ya know why:) , so i did not follow the trends.

But Macca's latest  (in a five yeras gap sice NEW) blew me away in the Long Run  (well, Band on the Run, no pun intended),, especially -Despite Repeated Warnings.. And  all of the sincerity and heartfelt of I Dont\t Know, Hand in Hand and yes, the solo at the end on "Hunt You Down/Naked/C-Link" (by Macca himself)

Desperados Under the Eaves-Warren Zevon (SOTD)

"Desperados Under the Eaves" is a song written and performed by Warren Zevon from the 1976 album Warren Zevon. The song describes the narrator's growing alcoholism ("all the salty margaritas in Los Angeles; I'm going to drink them up") and laments that no matter what occurs, he will wind up paying the bill for his low rent digs at the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel. It ends with him listening to the sound of the air conditioner humming and converting the hum to the repeated chorus "look away down Gower Avenue," which is sung with greater hope than the somewhat morose tone of the rest of the song. This song features background vocals from Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys. When conducting the string section for this song, Zevon kept the veteran players "on his side" with pre-written humor. Zevon has said in interviews that this is one of his most personal songs.

Dar Warren, mr. Mutineer, excitable boy, a murit la 56 de ani, acum 10 ani, pe 7 septembrie. So, here's keeping you in the heart...

E posibil sa nu mai fi vazut un film ca acesta :) deci considerati-va avertizati daca mergeti la cinema !

Plot: O familie de rednecks-i, tatal (Church) si fiul(Hirsch) angajeaza un killer, pe Joe din titlu (McConaughey) pentru a o ucide pe mama copiilor, respectiv fosta sotie, pentru a incasa prima de asigurare.

William Friedkin nu se dezmite nici ca septagenar (76 la vremea cind a avenit cu acest film la Venetia, in septembrie trecut). Trebuie sa mentionez inainte ca e unul din eroii mei personali, si il consider unul din cei mai buni regizori americani, auteur, cu sensibiliatati extrem de europene, si cu o predilectie pentru negru :). Cind l-am vazut la Cannes in 2006 cu Bug, (cronica aici), tot dupa o piesa de Tracy Letts, crease un film cosmaresc, claustrofobic, despre paranoia unui veteran de razboi, sindromul Vietnam continuat in Irak. Pure Kafka.
Acum a trecut la teritoriul Fargo & way beyond, Blood Sample sau No Country for Any Men :>, familia de rednecks, incest si asasinatul in familie. Dupa cum zice Warren Zevon, in Playing All Nite Long, "There's not much to country living, sweat, piss, jizz and blood." Cam asta e si parerea lui Billy Friedkin si daca asta e testamentul sau , so be it (BTW, noul proiect al lui este I am Wrath, cu Nicolas Cage, un vigilante thriller care se va filma la anul in februarie).
Killer Joe e o comedie neagra, crispy de tot, cu personaje si scene ca-n Shakespeare, Conjuratia imbecililor si Tennesse Williams, dar dus intr-o zona de umor negru, scrisnit, cum nici Coen-ii si nici Tarantino nu a avut morbiditatea sa o faca. Mai mult spre The Killer Inside Me si Grifters, romanele lui Jim Thompson, adpatate pt. ecran. Killer abia a avut distributie dupa Berlin.
Friedkin zice ca el si Letts au "the same worldview" si ca amindoi vad "the absurdity of the many facets in life." Proiectele lor sunt despre oameni "stuck in their realities and willing to do anything to get out of them," si ca ei nu sunt "fond of violence." Piesa lui Letts dateaza din 1993, asa ca precede filme de Coen-i si Tarantinesti, pe scena au jucat Fairuza Balk si Michelle Williams (Dottie)iar in rolul titular Scott Glenn.

Ratingul de NC 17 e raison in USA (la noi IM 18), dar Friedkin, care in trecut a facut Cruising, n-are nici un fel de problema cu asta...a facut apel, si n-a taiat decit citeva fotograme, "I am too old to get down on my knees and change the picture".

Cast:
Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch,Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon, intr-un rol incredibil de curajos cum putine sunt si cum vreo actrita ar accepta !, si Juno Temple (fata lui Julian, englezoaica, dar care pare perfect Texas white trash)...
iar cine vorbeste de McConaughey ca despre un rom-com hack, remember Lone Star, A Time to Kill, si Dazed and Confused. Toate personaje sudiste. Mie personal mi-a adus aminte mereu de un Paul Newman tinar. F. bun si in franciza deschisa cu Lincoln Lawyer, iata un McConaughey feroce, suav, killer cu "eyes that hurt", acolo unde ochii dor....in rolul vietii sale de pina acum (si nu, nu va fi nominalizat la Oscar). Filmul ofera si un blowjob inedit (cel mai tare din filmul american, despasit doar de filme ca Salo si recent, A Serbian Movie) dupa care niciodata mincatul la KFC nu va mai fi la fel, in acest sens posterul american e genial dar trebuie sa stii care este forma statului Texas :)

vocalistul de la Mott the Hoople a implinit 70 de ani ! si e la al 13-lea album !!!(aflat de el via Uncut !) album excelent, matur, serios, cu vocea intre Noddy Holder de la Slade si Rod Stewart...orchestratii minunate, unele imi amintesc de Warren Zevon, prima piesa, The Great Escape excelenta, cu ecouri de Bruce Springsteen, “When you gotta gotta get away, get away..ESPECIALLY when the other guy’s BIGGER than you", la fel emotionantul Man Overboard, “drunk and disorderly”/straight in the deep end/sometimes it’s a treacherous sea !!!”

Plus ca apare si in Body of Lies (If the World)!

mi-a venit albumul lui Warren live din 1981, extended, pentru prima oara pe cd la rhino in 2007, wow!
si am gasit pe amazon un poster de vinzare. din turneul din 1995: "something happens"...
imi place la nebunie ca, impresionat de dressed to kill, warren schimba versurile (chestie uzuala la fiecre versiune de altfel) la Wewewolves of London, "little old lady got mutilated last night...Brian De Palma did it", parca imi amintesc de un post de anul trecut unde am mai mentionat asta...
