The Running Man (2025)

The new Running Man, is not a remake pre se of the Ahnuld 1987 vehicle, but a more faithful adaptation of Stephen King as Richard Bachman novel, written in 1973, published in 1982. That novel happened in the year 2025 and actually today it happens, with the Squid Game series and a Korean Reality show named exactly Running Man. So Ben Richards is in a banal world, becoming more real every day. I mean, it's like Y-day news after the Hunger Games series and all the Tv/straming fare of this kind. 

Running man is of course influenced by Rollerball, which still stands up as one of the best film of its era (not the shitty unnecesaary reamke) it's even worse tha n its remake.

Everyone's commenting, oh, it's an Edgar Wright film. Ok, that is like a certified value for a big budget blockbuster Sf action  (110 mill. $). surely not. I was also very dispointed by Lst Night in Soho, his take in gialllos, very pretentios and shallow. The most action Wright directed was in Baby Driver, which I enjoyed most of his all films, and he's better in making quirky, funny, heartfelt little films, not Hollywood fodder.

Also Glen Powell, which I've just seen in the lastest SNL edition, can't carry the film., at all. Not a problem with the guy and he tries hard but neh.

This would've worked as a Snake Plissken adventure, like Escape fromn the Dome. I guess Wright gave a few nods to John Carpenter. 

There's also a problem with the duration which is overlong, 2h13 min, oi, the film doesn't start until we get to the show and no matter how good Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo are, they can't help much.

Also this world, used and dirty, used to cost less to produce on the screen. Here they went to Bulgaria for exteriors and day shots. Somehow doesn't look like America. The rest of it was hot at Warner Bros' studios in England.

Now for the music, unimpressive loud score by Steven Price. And as Edgar Wright ia great fan of songs to use on the soundtrack (yeah, great in Baby Driver), here most of them are wasted. Rolling Stones'  Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker), Sly and the Family Stone (Underdog)-on the main credits, Iggy and the Stooges (Search and Destroy), The Allman Brothers (Revival) , Miles Davis (Red China Blues) and Tom Jones (Keep on Running) on the end credits. Including a riff of The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (last heard appropiately in One Battle After Another). And Jamie XX, far from my desk ;)

It's been Stephen King's year all over, from Life of Chuck to Welcome to Derry, the IT prequel that runs now on HBO MAX, MGM's The Institute series, passing through The Monkey and another Bachman opus, The Long Walk (which I liked best of these all, my review here). 

Wright's film is full of King references /Easter eggs for the eyes of King's fans and King himself, credited as an executive producer. Of course King was happy with the film, as I know his tastes in film (ex: how much he hated Kubrick's The Shining and managed to to a sequel just to get rid of that Kubrick hangover, I don't care so much about what he likes or does not cinematically...hey, what about that Maximum Overdrive?

expresive, care îl plasează printre cei mai apreciați artiști de blues din Italia. Prezență în

premieră în România, exclusiv la Transilvania Blues Festival.

* Sean Chambers & The Savoy Brown Rhythm Section (SUA) – Chitarist și vocalist din Florida,

cu o carieră de peste două decenii, fost membru al trupei lui Hubert Sumlin (chitaristul lui

Howlin’ Wolf). A fost inclus de revista Guitarist Magazine în topul celor mai buni 50 de

chitariști de blues din lume, iar albumele sale au intrat constant în clasamentele Billboard

RIP Rick Davies

Rick Davies, the keyboardist of Supertramp (on Wurlitzer), and founding member in 1969, died on Sept. 6th 2025 at 81 :( 

He stayed with the band after Roger Hodgson's departure, in 1983. 

Supertramp was one of my favorite bands in the 80's, and in the 90's too, following my exposure to the vinyl of Breakfast in America (1979), which I kept and played to exhaustion. Then saw the vhs of Paris Live and later on I taped and then bought all their CD's, classic perios era. Saw only Roger Hodgson live in 2019 in Bucharest...

Cine-concertul live Blüesferatü revine la Castelul Bran – 28 iunie 2025, ora 21:30

 

Nosferatu – Eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922), capodopera regizorului expresionist F.W. Murnau, este considerat unul dintre cele mai importante filme mute din istoria cinematografiei. Muzica originală a filmului s-a pierdut, iar de-a lungul timpului s-au realizat numeroase partituri alternative, făcând din Nosferatu un favorit al cine-concertelor din întreaga lume.

 

Dar niciodată nu s-a cântat blues pe el. Până acum.

 

Blüesferatü – eine Symphonie des Blues aduce în România o versiune live în care imaginea iconică a lui Nosferatu este acompaniată de o coloană sonoră originală, compusă și interpretată live de șase muzicieni brașoveni, într-o cheie blues psihedelic, intensă și cinematică.

După premiera mondială din 2023 și reprezentațiile din 2024 în cadrul Transilvania Blues Festival Brașov, Buzău International Arts Festival și TIFF Timișoara, proiectul revine în 2025, pe 28 iunie 2025, ora 21:30, într-o nouă punere în scenă, în grădina Castelului Bran.

 

Muzica originală este compusă și interpretată live de muzicieni brașoveni: Ionuț Constantin „Yokko” – compozitor, dirijor; Robert Watzatka „Watzzy” – compozitor, chitară; Ilyes Botond „Boti” – chitară; Mihai Nedea – clape; Ciprian Pârvu – bas; Claudiu Rusu „Kani” – tobe. Muzicienii vor cânta live în fața ecranului pe toată durata filmului - 95 de minute!

 

Un eveniment rar, aflat la granița dintre muzică, film și performance, sub clar de lună, în inima Transilvaniei.

RIP Brian Wilson

Just on my first day in Ireland, the evening of July 11th, while stopping on a gas station I got the X notice, from Keith Richards, "goodbye Brian Wilson"...Then the news and the social media were flooded, the next day's newspaper in Dublin had a one page obituary, all my facebook, even the radio played his songs...Took me 5 days to get to write this...(adapter/charger/chord problems plus 1 PIL & 1 NIN)

I saw Brian Wilson in Lyon in July 2017, at Théâtre Antique de Fourvière (Les Nuits de Fourvière Festival, avec Toubib Mishu). I cam all the way from Grossmann Fest in Slovenia, via Zagreb and Milan, and left afterwards to Geneva for Sardegna. It was a detour and a stop I wanted to do and I am so happy I did. It was a magical, wonderful evening, filled with uplifting songs. 

Here's the setlist , he played Beach Boys songs and then Pet Sounds live, ending it with Love and Mercy, the title of his biopic picture from 2014 (as Love & Mercy), where he was played by Paul Dano (young) and John Cusack (old).  That film dealt with his recovering from psychosis and forced medication, a very dark long chapter in Brian Wilson's life. He was, as his song says, not a man on his times. The dark side of Genius. Cos' Wilson is one of the greatest genius in XXth century music, admired by his peers, McCartney, Lennon, Dylan, Neil Young, etc. If The Beach Boys wouldn't put out Pet Sounds in 1966 (and the lost 1967 Beach Boys unfinished album, updated and completed by BW in his master Opus, SMILE, in 2004), there wouldn't have been no Beatles' Revolver, then Sgt. Pepper, then no Their Satanic Majesties, and maybe no Tommy and no Dark Side of the Moon. God Only Knows ...

Good Bye Brian...it was an honor to see you live and I thank Uncut magazine for introducing me to your work, on Smile era.

RIP Sly Stone

Sylvester Stewart aka Sly Stone (leader of legendary funk-soul group Sly and the Family Stone) went away to the other side... He was 82. He is the godfather of funk (adelik), soul master, Uber rockstar in hiss day and a raw model for Prince. Also for Nile Rodgers, George Clinton and many others, black or white. He upped James Brown's game to a a musical level of perfection. His band played Woodstock in 1969, one of the high(er!) acts of the monumental event. And I mean, who ever married on Madison Square Garden and Live ? (in 1974!).

There's a great documentary about him, that just premiered in Sundance Fest. this January and was streamed by Hulu (in Ro on Disney+) in Feb. 2025. Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of the Black Genius), directed by Questlove, musician on his own. See it and you'll get why Sly was the slyest ;) He did a big big thing for Black musicians way back when segregation was All Time(s) Nigh !

Sinners (2025)

"Dance with the Devil"

Sinners is an unexpected mix of black Americana, Southern Gothic horror, vampire fare, legends and racial tale told on Blues rhythms and chords. With a twist of folk-lore, religion and superstition. And Blues. Did I say Blues ?

It's also an epic western (epic on scope and duration, 2hr. 17 min.), the deal with the devil, Robert Johnson's style, KKK and moonshine in 1932's Louisiana.

Shades of Walter Hill (stylistically lots of his films, his style -think Last Man Standing, and major plot point: Crossroads), Tarantino & Rodriguez (From Dusk' Til Dawn and Coogler says The Faculty was an inspiration), John Carpenter (The Thing, Vampires), Kathryn Bigelow (Near Dark), 

Beautfully shot in Super 70 Panavision by Autumn Durald Arkapaw (Wakanda Forever) and presented in IMAX (shot on a ratio of 2.76 : 1), Sinners is acted with intensity and seriousness (Michael B. Jordan in a dual role, Delroy Lindo as Delta Slim,  Hailee Steinfeld as the white hottie, brit Jack O'Connell as Remmick) and scored magnificently by  Ludwig Göransson in his 4th collaboration with Ryan Coogler (after Black Panther, BP: Wakanda Forever and Creed).

Miles Caton mesmerizes as Sammie Moore, the made-up kid musician played in his old age by none other than Mr. Legend, Buddy Guy. Reason enuff for any blues aficionado to see the film !!! On the BIG Screen, brother, and if you live close to an IMAX environment, pls. go there !

Add to this a grand soundtrack companion.

And a pulsating original score by  Ludwig Göransson-who admires the blues since a kid in Sweden, did his homework seriously and this represents a tribute to his father. His credits are on banjo / music / musician: banjo / musician: resonator guitar / resonator guitar / score producer.

Jose Ramirez este considerat artistul latin Blues #1 din lume, nominalizat la Blues Music Award în 2021 și 2023, locul 2 la International Blues Challenge organizate de The Blues Foundation în Memphis, Tennessee. Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party (2024)

There was one doc about Tom Petty, Peter Bogdaovich's exhaustive 4 hrs. Running Down a Dream (2007). Now there's also Somewhere You Feel Free (2021), about the amking of his album Wildflowers. And now this Lost documentary about Tom Petty in 1983. And the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party  came out in US theaters in 2024 for a few days, ultra limited. It's the 1st film (lost too) of Cameron Crowe. Featuring the grand weird desert video of "You Got Lucky" from Long After Dark (1982). And the outtakes. And the making of a director - C.C. -

The film was restored for a one-weekend theatrical release in October2024 (on Tom's Bday), and it’s now available to stream on Paramount+ as of March 11.

English guitar hero John Sykes, from Blue Murder, Thin Lizzy, Tygers of Pang Tang and Whitesnake, he was only 65 !!!

Garth Hudson, the last surviving member of THE BAND is gone at 87 ! After the demises of   Richard Manuel (suicide in 1986 at 42 !), Rick Danko(1999), Levon Helm  (2012) & Robbie Robertson on my Bday in 2023....

Bertrard Blier, the great French director of Nihilistic films like Les Valseuses and Buffet Froid, he was 85. 

also French director Jeannot Szwarc, at 87. Somewhere in Time, Jaws 2, Supergirl. 

and Dame Joan Plowright, sir Laurence Olivier's former wife at 95. She shot in Romania in Callas Forever.

Eamonn McCormack e originar din Dublin, Irlanda și e cunoscut ca o ”Adevărată legendă de blues irlandez/ True Irish Blues Legend”. De peste 4 decenii pe scenă, chitarist virtuoz, Eamonn are un stil energic, inventiv și exploziv, cu o energie maximă live. Rădăcinile sale muzicale și de concept sunt Slade, Cat Stevens, Neil Young și Rory Gallagher, cu care a și cântat. De fapt ultima piesă înregistrată de Rory Gallagher, este chiar cu Eamonn McCormack.

Cale.   S-a întors în Irlanda și a cântat în diverse formule, pînă la cea de acum, un ”power blues trio”. A înregistrat pe disc cu mulți artiști de valoare de gen, de la Rory Gallagher la Jan Akkerman, Pat Travers, George Thorogood, Walter Trout, Johnny Winter, Nils Lofgren.

The Tasmanian Devil Returns to Brașov!!!

Am avut plăcerea și onoarea de a-l aduce pentru prima dată în România pe însuși Diavolul Tasmanian, mr. Rob Tognoni. În Brașov, vineri 1 iulie 2022 la Transilvania Blues Nights! Chitarist exceptional de power blues-rock, cel mai bun din Australia, Rob T. se întoarce la clubul Rockstadt pentru un concert unic, vineri 13 decembrie, ora 20.00!

Rob Tognoni e originar din Tasmania, Australia și e cunoscut sub numele de "The Tasmanian Devil" / Diavolul Tasmanian.
Rob are un stil energic, inventiv și exploziv, proaspăt deși este sexagenar, supranumit acum și ”Errol Flynn al blues-rock-ului”. Rădăcinile sale sunt blues, blues rock și classic rock și influențele sale sunt variate, de la Cream la Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King și AC/DC.
Cariera sa acoperă peste 40 de ani, a scos 27 de albume, a cântat pe scenă alături de Peter Green, Sting, ZZ Top, Bo Diddley. Concertele sale sunt speciale, de la Cupa Mondială FIFA, la pușcăriile de maximă securitate din Australia sau Sala Mozart din Viena.
Rob vine la Brașov alături de trupa sa, Rob Tognoni Trio pentru a promova noul său album ”Rebel” (2024), descris de revista de specialitate Eclipse Magazine: ”Asskicker”.

RIP Quincy Jones

Quincy Jones gone...91 years old. A Legend's Legend and a whole world gone. Described as a Titan, and yep, it's a good word to describe his whole work.

Just talked about him re Eddie van Halen's Involvement on Michael Jackson's Beat It from Thriller (#1 selling album of all time still, that he concieved and produced), that is a controversial story.

Seminal Jazz album and song: Soul Bossa Nova -1964. Re-made popular by Austin Powers. Same year Quincy Jones became the first Black vice-president of a record label (mercury). He did humongous things for his community and his people. 

There is a fabulous documentary on him, QUINCY, made by Netflix in 2018. Still streaming. Do yourself a favor and see it. Then listen to the Man's music.

Also on Netflix there is a doc about how Quincy put together USA for Africa's 1984 "We Are the World"  (brilliant stuff, esp. some of the backstories). 

His music scores are brilliant, from his debut in Sidney Lumet' s The Pawnbroker (1965), to Joahn and Mary, Norman Jewison's In the Heat of the Night, to the original The Italian Job, Peckinpah's The Getaway (all great Jazz there), The Hot Rock, The Wiz  (1978) !!! Lumet directed, Quincy arranged the score, even plays an Emerald City musician, Michael acted as The Scarecrow and the film flopped (big time), to Roots on TV, to Spielberg's The Color Purple (that he also produced), 7 times Oscar nominated and no award :( 

well, he had 28 Grammys out of 80 nominations, more than any other musician in history :)

Lance Lopez is a name that often comes up when discussing the greatest blues guitar players in the world. Mentored by ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, blues legend Johnny Winter, and Jimi Hendrix drummer Buddy Miles, Lance has an old soul and blues in his blood. He’s been a professional musician since the tender age of just 14 years old, being a member of Johnnie Taylor’s band as well as a member of the Buddy Miles Express. He has opened shows for icons like BB King, Steve Vai, and Jeff Beck, and played with greats like Eric Gales, Walter Trout, Warren Haynes, and dozens more. Lance has a new record out called Trouble Is Good on Cleopatra Records, and it features guests like Brian Tichy, Gregg Bissonette, and a bunch more.
