Review
By G. E. Harrison
I've seen Preston a couple of times playing at B.B. King's in Memphis and I was very impressed by him as he effortlessly switched between BB, Albert and Freddy King-style blues, with both excellent vocals and guitar playing. On this record the first seven tracks feature a tribute to Elmore James recorded in Memphis with guest slide players Kirk Smitheart and Michael Aarons, with the remaining tracks being recorded in Holland with the Dutch band Fat Harry and the Fuzzy Licks. It features songs associated with Elmore including "It hurts me too", "Look over yonder wall" and the title track and my favourite was probably an updated but still authentic reading of "You gotta move". I'd expected the Memphis tracks to be the better selections but I'm not convinced that the Elmore songs really suit Preston's style, although everything is delivered very professionally and you can hear the admiration for James in Preston's voice.
However, from "Honky Tonk" on Preston seems much more at ease with this more modern-sounding soul blues and the band support him wonderfully with funky brass and Hammond organ, and a crisp swinging rhythm section. He even delivers a convincing soulful version of Prince's "Purple Rain" complete with a gut-wrenching guitar solo. For me this album doesn't really hang together but it does provide lots of variety and shows Preston's versatility and his ability to handle different styles and backing bands.
