OFFICIAL BIOGRAPHY
There are ""supergroups,"" and there are super groups. Purposeful Porpoise is the latter. In a digital age where flagging recording budgets typically mean that bands don't all head into the recording studio together for live recording sessions, it is now more the norm that a band may record a whole album without ever being in one room at the same time. Musicians are able to record their own parts, send them off to a producer/engineer for mixing and mastering and through the magic of digital technology an album is done.
But thats not how Purposeful Porpoise does things.
Purposeful Porpoise founder and lead guitarist/vocalist/composer Alex Cora envisioned something different for this Los Angeles- based, progressive rock, concept band. With influences ranging from Genesis and Frank Zappa to Jeff Beck and Joni Mitchell, Purposeful Porpoises self-titled, double CD debut was recorded live in-studio with some of the best musicians in the world jamming and creating music that has a live, organic feel that can only be created when artists play live together.
Assembling what can only be called an all star line up of musicians, Purposeful Porpoise was conceived not only as a stand-alone record, but as part of a larger, three-album project telling the saga of Jeux Deau, which translates literally, as Water Games. Featuring legendary drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting/Frank Zappa); keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater/Yngwie Malmsteen); bassist Ric Fierabracci (Chick Corea/Dave Weckl) and violinist Ginny Luke (Meatloaf/Dave Matthews) Purposeful Porpoise is a fully evolved, melodic masterpiece full of adventure, ambition and awe-inspiring musicianship.
For me, music is a living, organic thing. I really wanted to create something that was a return to the great, British prog rock of the 70s, says Cora. I really wanted there to be a real jam and a vibe. You cant get that by emailing tracks around. We recorded for 3 days at Ocean Studios Burbank with all of us there jamming. I think you can definitely hear that on the record.
The double disc set kicks off with the decidedly epic, “Crossing the Unknown” – a 21-minute, cinematic prologue that introduces the listener to Purposeful Porpoise’s futuristic, aquatic world of “Nommos,” where dolphin-like, bi-ped “Nommo” dwell peacefully until their world’s power source is stolen and transported elsewhere – launching a battle between good and evil, and a quest for survival in a world occupied by air pirates, warriors, mystics, savages, villains and saviors.
As much as Purposeful Porpoise pushes the envelope of progressive rock, tracks like “Unexplored” and “Which Way is Up” showcase Cora’s decidedly diverse songwriting skills and modern-yet-familiar sound -- evoking Sgt. Pepper’s-era Beatles. Whereas tracks like “Nowhere Bound” evoke an unfamiliar note -- sounding like the unlikely offspring of Dave Matthews and Pink Floyd. “Cycles” unleashes jaw-dropping furious solos from Sherinian, Cora and Colaiuta that will leave the most jaded prog-rock fan gobsmacked, while delivering a restrained intensity that heralds a dynamic, melodic and profoundly progressive sound.
Throughout the record, Cora makes the most of the virtuosity of Colaiuta, Fierabracci, Sherinian and Luke, who have ample time to solo and (tastefully) showcase their considerable chops. The entire album is loaded with passionate grooves that drive an almost outlandish level of virtuoso musicianship. Sonically, Purposeful Porpoise is unafraid to dig deep into the past, but remains firmly rooted in the present, while keeping their eye focused on the future.
