Kai Vierstra

Kai Vierstra at Norte Maar.

lightning drawings!

He makes them on a bed of nails... pressing the paper flat to the board so that all the nails have punctured through... tilts the board, dips a little ball in ink which gets inserted at top and plink-plinks down through the gridded nails leaving a zig-zag ink trail. After the paper gets pulled off the board/nails it is usually coated with a honey-scented beeswax. This might happen a few times with different layers of color, ink, wax... I'm not sure.

My last post on Kai (5/09) has a pic of some of the first lightning drawings. The new ones here and in his studio have a lot more color.

the new ones are gorgeous

Kai Vierstra. I won't even tell you how cheap these things are but it's ridiculous.

The main show is Paul D'Agostino... very good also... I will post photos later. Both shows close 3/4.

Wide Open, at McCaig-Wells

Nick Kuszyk has curated a huge show at McCaig-Wells. Lots of friends of Nick's, Richmond-connections, and collaborations between Nick and the artists. Last Day is October 7th!

Peter Sutherland - this is the guy that did the VBS.TV Richard Prince episodes... I went to his (old) website and am liking his work, definitely seeing the affinity for Prince.

His pictures make me pine for Travis Conner... (ps - Travis, if you are reading this, I know I still owe you money, sorry. I owe everybody money). Travis is probably not reading this of course, he is probably sitting in a boxcar somewhere...

Kai Vierstra (MY HOST!) + Nick Kuszyk - it's one of the show's many collaborations.

Kai's earthquakes and tornadoes are made by stressing and bending; the flat wooden boards get clamped and screwed to fit the curved metal parts, cracking and splintering as he tightens them. Go to his website to see the videos... nice popping and cracking sounds.

Kai's palette is usally raw - concrete, wood, metal, cactus - but for this one the board was first given to Nick to be painted orange and colonized, before being returned to Kai.

Peter Corrie

Tunde Adebimpe
Tunde Adebimpe - i can't find a link to more of Tunde's art, but you have definitely heard his music.

Also in this show are Drew Liverman, Bruce Wilhelm, Sto, Langdon Graves, Bonnie Collura, Pat Berran... TOO MANY to name them all, there are 115 pieces in the show!

i'm back

I'm Back. Saw a ton of stuff (in NYC)...

nytrip 053
Kai made me sleep under his earthquake that could come crashing down at any moment. I think it was all videotaped just in case, for fun.

nytrip 052
Everything on the wall, except for that last piece on the right, is stuff Meridith has made... or rather, drawings and studies for things Meridith is making or has made.

Mike Nelson
Later at Mike Nelson's installation I cracked Kai's head with a baseball hat and left him for dead. If you smell something funny in there it is probably Kai.

met/re-met - Meridith Pingree, Edie Fake, Eric Sall, Ky Anderson, Alison Ward, Kai Vierstra, Roberta Smith, Kelli Williams, David Herbert, Matt Wycoff, Bryan Zanisnik, Jared Lindsay Clark, Thordis Adalsteinsdottir, Vandana Jain, Tom Sanford, Rachel Hayes, Glen Einbinder, Kathryne Hall, Mike Estabrook, Scott Penkava, Charles Browning... (i am adding names as i remember them)

KAI PLUS

Shows with anaba Friends - a little late, but two shows are opening this weekend (one Friday in Indianapolis, one Saturday in Brooklyn), both of which feature a number of artists "as seen on anaba".

Material Presence, at Marsh Project Gallery, Indianapolis - this show includes Danielle Riede, Eric Sall, and Wendy White.

Danielle on anaba, Eric on anaba here and here (with good comments), Wendy on anaba. I think someone in Indianapolis is maybe reading anaba!!!

Wide Open, at McCaig-Welles, Brooklyn... OPENING is SATURDAY 9/8, 8-11pm!!! - this show is curated by Nick Kuszyk and includes Kai Vierstra, Bonnie Collura, Pat Berran, Drew Liverman, Peter Corrie, Bruce Wilhelm, and Langdon Graves.

Kai on anaba here and here, Pat on anaba, Drew on anaba 6/8/07, 6/7/07, 8/24/06, 11/8/05 (!), Peter on anaba here and here, Bruce... Bruce has been on here so many times he has his own label, click and scroll down to see much Bruce.

Curator Nick is on anaba here 8/24/2006, here 2/23/2006 (this is the BEST), here 9/16/05, here 10/20/04... PLUS I'm wearing a Nick Kuszyk t-shirt in these Philly artblog photos.

GOOD THING - i have stuff by Bruce, Nick, and Peter.
BAD THING - i am not in either of these shows.

gamma tech

Kai recommended Gamma Tech earlier this year, because I wanted to know a good company that makes slides from digital images.

Finally placed an on-line order to have slides made from uploaded digital images late Tuesday evening... and they arrived Thursday morning (I used the Fed Ex saver mailing option, which stated a 2-3 day delivery).

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

thanks, Kai.

Kai Vierstra

Kai Vierstra, originally uploaded by Bromirski.
Kai Vierstra has updated his website with new work completed at Skowhegan this summer. Above is a photo of the bastard's studio with Buckminster Fuller-Corner Preacher and here is Thunder Plinth.

from Kai's site -

"Buckminster Fuller- Corner Preacher is a sculpture that I made for the roof of my studio in Central Maine. It uses the sound altering properties of the parabolic* reflector to broadcast (shoot)(shout?) a beam of sound in the semi-circle around the corner of the building. This point of focus is controlled by ropes & pulleys located in front of, and above my chair which is situated at the door to my studio. The sound that is heard while standing in the beam is Buckminster Fuller's 1968 lecture at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. It was only available for listening on the property, copying is strictly forbidden. It is, therefore, a very special message in so many ways."

Yay, Kai!

Photos of Recommendation: Thumbs-Up Mandala: Kai Vierstra

This is Kai Vierstra.
Kai is included in Fresh Meat at Kim Foster Gallery until July 2nd along with a number of other recent graduates of VCU's MFA sculpture program. Some of the others showing are Diana Al-Hadid, Sarah Bednarek, Gabriel Bennet, Tim Devoe, and Fernando Mastrangelo. The VCU Sculpture program is ranked #1 in the country so those curious what all the fuss is about should try to see the show. I heard Jerry Saltz came by and took a bunch of notes.
Kim Foster Gallery doesn't seem to have it's own website, just an Artnet page which hasn't been updated, but fortunately Kai has a good website with all of his work including in-progress shots of Earthquake, his Kim Foster piece.
Kai is currently in residence at Skowhegan. Sarah McEneaney is up there as visiting faculty - I bet she's making some good paintings.
