Artist Interview: OIL PAINTINGS CHRISTA

I am very pleased to introduce you to a lovely and talented artist! Christa is based in Greece and she is of Greek and German origins. Besides being a very talented artist, Christa is a wonderful person and she loves animals and nature. As soon as I first saw her paintings, I was captured by their vivid colors, by the evident love for life, nature, people and animals that this artist expresses, and by that charming, "naïve" quality of her paintings. They spoke to my heart. Christa works under her own brand Oil Paintings Christa, and  here she shares her artistic journey and inspiration with us!
Welcome Christa!

- How did you first come to art and creativity? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?

That’s a good question. Painting has been in me since my childhood. I used to paint everywhere… on paper, on the table, and my favourite place were the walls. I think I have taken after my mother.

- When and how did you realize this was your real life path?

When I lost my job 5 years ago (2008), and suddenly my life was full of free time!!! I said loud – “Now you have time for what you love!”. I started taking painting lessons from a friend and painter, Mr Gerontas. After that, I began with my first doodles.

Gerontas. Danach begannen die ersten Schmierereien.

- What are your main sources of inspiration?

Hm… people and animals around me, or photos. The important thing is it makes me happy. And when I notice something, I think “How could I paint that?” or “I’m going to paint this!”. It’s odd, but I can’t paint when I’m sad.

- We share a big love for animals, how do you express this in your artwork?

Oh yes, animals… I admire their nature. How they do everything in a perfect way. Getting an animal on canvas is about my personal feelings too… or a friend’s personal moments that have inspired me.

- How has life affected your art and art affected your life?

In an absolutely positive way! Everything has become more beautiful and calmer, and especially my inner self. I used to be a very restless person. Art, no matter which kind, does help. And I recommend everybody to give themselves some time for art, and to express themselves through it. Sometimes words are not enough.

Total positiv!

- Art is about light and color! What are your favorite colors?
Kunst ist Licht und Farbe! Was sind Deine Lieblingsfarben?

Light colors especially. I love blue and green. I think you can see this. I mix them myself and thus I learn more about them.

- How does your home country and in particular Greek art influence your work? Are you inspired by any particular painters?
Wie beeinflusst Dein Heimatland und insbesondere griechische Kunst Dein Werk? Bist Du durch besondere Maler inspiriert?

My home country has a strong influence on me, especially ist nature. As to Greek art, I mostly like the old one. I’m inspired by many painters, especially those who painted details. There are many. I often look at many paintings and I’m curious about everything. I wish I could go back in time, 200 or 300 years, and I could sit next to a painter and could watch him, his colors and his model.

- Did you have a formal training in the arts or attend art courses?
Hattest Du eine formelle Kunstbildung? Hast Du Kunst studiert oder Kunstkurse besucht?

I took training hours from Gerontas. About 6 months. He paints so real, and every day, as I walked by his shop, I had to stop and admire his artwork. So it all started, and we are now friends. Maybe I’m going to take up college some day.

- Do you have a studio or home studio or particular part of your house you have devoted to your artwork? Where do you paint your artwork?
Wo malst Du Deine Bilder?

Yes, I have my own corner in our house. In front of me I have a large balcony door, and I can enjoy nature at the same time.

- How/where do you sell your artwork? (galleries, shops, exhibitions, online etc.)
Wie/wo vermarktest Du Dein Werk? (Galerien, Ausstellungen, online usw.)

I had 5 personal exhibitions. Two were at galleries. And I have participated in group exhibitions as well -- I find them very interesting, because you get to see so much. With personal exhibitions you get to know the painter better. I’m now also selling my work online in two e-shops.

Ich hatte 5 persönliche Ausstellungen. Zwei waren in Galleries.

Thank you dear Christa for this great and inspiring interview, and for sharing your artistic journey and inspiration! We wish you continued joy, inspiration and success with your art and in your life!
You can find Christa's wonderful original artwork in her Etsy shop and in her Dawanda shop and you can get to know more about her work and her colorful world in her lovely blog.

Artist Interview: VALERIATELIER

Welcome to my September Artist Interview!
I'm so excited to introduce an artist from my native city, Torino (Turin)!
Valeria is a talented artist based in the Piedmontese city and besides creating colorful paintings and illustrations, she works and experiments with lots of other mediums. I love her gift for color (we both love bold colors) and her love for experimentation... the sky's the limit!
Valeria works under her own brand Valeriatelier, and in her Etsy shop she displays a part of her work, including her original paintings and illustrations, bookmarks and polymer clay jewelry.
Meet Valeria! Here she shares her artistic journey and inspiration with us!
Welcome Valeria!

- How did you first come to art and creativity? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?

I have always loved drawing and painting. Since I was a very little child I have been spending my time drawing and colouring. This passion of mine was born with me!

Ho sempre amato disegnare e dipingere.

- When and how did you realize this was your greatest passion?

After finishing compulsory school I decided to enroll in Liceo Artistico and then in University. Later on, I attended some courses in order to learn new techniques and develop new interests.

- You express your creativity in many ways, can you tell us a little bit about them?

That’s true! I love getting to know new techniques and ranging over the field of handicraft as well as the field of art. Over the last years I’ve been experimenting with papier-mâché, felt and modelling polymer clay. All these techniques and materials are very challenging because they give you the opportunity to create new shapes. You can find out that materials have incredibile features and properties, and the fact that they can be recycled and used again must not be forgotten. This is the exact reason why I love papier-mâché…

E’ vero!

- What different feelings and emotions do painting and clay modeling give you?

As far as my sensations are concerned, I don’t think there are so many differences between painting and modelling. The creative act is what excites me the most… whether it happens through painting or modelling… this is not fundamental to me.

- What are your main sources of inspiration?

My sources of inspiration are infinite!!... Anything can give me an idea or provide a tip which later on will develop into an idea! So I’ll answer… nature, everyday life with its good points and shortcomings… also music or films.

- How has life affected your art and art affected your life?

Art has definitely affected my life and above all many choices of mine. Probably, without this passion in my life now I would be more tranquil and quiet and I would have fewer problems.
My life has marginally affected what I’ve done so far… Maybe the only influence life has had on my art was that it distracted me and turned me away from art itself for some years.

- Art is about light and color! What are your favorite colors?

All colours are fantastic!!... They can express anything, any emotions. If you had asked me this question 20 years ago… I’m sure I would have given you a very different answer. 20 years ago I would have told you that I loved soft colours, shades and transparencies. But now (it must depend on my age!) I can tell you that I definitely love intense and lively colours, colours which are full of energy and that can transmit it visually. That is… exactly the opposite!!... In any case, colours are and will always be the fundamental element of all things I create.

I colori son tutti fantastici!!.. possono esprimere qualsiasi cosa, qualsiasi emozione!

- Is there any influence in your art from the region you live in? Is there something you feel comes from your specific Piedmontese environment in your art?

No, I don’t think so. I have always made reference to anywhere in order to learn and I’ve never been attached to my birthplace as far as my works are concerned. Actually, I’ve probably found my best ideas and lessons very far from here.

No, non credo.

- Did you have a formal training in the arts or attend art courses?

Yes, Liceo Artistico and different kind of courses.

Si , liceo e corsi di vario genere.

- Do you have a studio or home studio or particular part of your home you have devoted to your artwork? Where do you create your artwork?

I create everything at home. I am aware of the fact that this is not very practical; in any case, I move within my house and change location, that depends on what I’m doing. In a way… the whole house is involved in my activities… even though tidiness suffers quite a lot from that!

Thank you Valeria for this beautiful and inspiring interview, and for sharing your creative journey and inspiration! It's been a pleasure to meet you, and hopefully very soon in person too! We wish you continued joy, inspiration and success with your life and art.

You can find Valeria's beautiful work in her Etsy shop Valeriatelier. And you can get to know more about her work and inspiration in her blog.

Artist Interview: LATOUCHABLES

Welcome to my May Artist Interview!
My new interview takes me to the sunny Rhine Valley, in Germany, where I meet Dawn, the talented artist behind LaTouchables. I fell in love with Dawn's creations the very moment I first came across them. I love the amazing textures and magical use of fabric, vintage beads and buttons and lovingly chosen materials, and I'm just totally fascinated by the look and feel of Dawn's wonderful jewelry... or rather, as she says, body adornment. Dawn truly adorns a woman with her work. Her pieces make me dream about faraway places, about long lost civilizations, about oriental mysteries, about caravans on the Silk Road... I can imagine them adorning some lady's neck in a movie based on Agatha Christie's novels. Just the names and their fascinating stories make you sigh and yearn: The Spice Thief, The Empress, Sand Storm, The Paharaoh... Each and every piece she creates tells a story, in its turn containing myriads of stories as each single bead, button and piece of fabric has a story of its own to tell.
As Dawn tells us, "The whole process of creating begins with an impression--from the weather, a moving picture, a book, a feeling, an experience. The materials--a vintage button from a flea-market in Berlin, Dutch wax cotton, the finest Italian linen or raw canvas or combed cotton--each element could well stand alone. Taken together, they create an irresistible whole. These are my paints". Just reading the descriptions of her creations will take you on a journey and make you dream...

In order to know Dawn's stunning work better, and her beautiful world, please make sure you read my friend Yael's beautiful post about her: LaTouchables - Beauty from the Rhine!

And now... meet Dawn! Here she shares her artistic journey and inspiration with us!
Welcome Dawn!

- You live and work in Germany, in the Rhine Valley. Where are you originally from?

I'm originally from the Midwest in the USA. I grew up in the corn belt (endless prairie punctuated by big cities and the Mississippi River, black earth and farmland) and I spent years in the Deep South, and then in Florida. The first time I flew in a jumbo jet, it was to Africa. That was the beginning of a love affair with 'going somewhere else', and now I am a permanent resident of Germany, and I consider it my adoptive country. Places in Europe are so close together--I enjoy the possibility of just crossing borders and being exposed to an entirely different culture. You have technical cultures sharing borders with romantic cultures--it's amazing.

- How did you choose the lovely name for your Etsy Shop, LaTouchables?

I wanted a timeless name that didn't define me. It has multiple meanings...taken literally, the things I make feel good to the touch. They are soft and lightweight, yet substantial. Well, most of the time. And, tongue-in-cheek, the expression is a play on words from the film, The Untouchables, which sounds like a noir paperback novel you might escape into for instant gratification, and real escape. I liked that part of it, and also that it has an exotic sound and is easy to say, to remember. It just became me.

- How did you first come to art and creativity? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?

One of my first memories was drawing with crayons, and I literally remember feeling blown-away by the colors and the things I could do with them. I was three. That memory was as strong as food...it has never left me.

- Why did you choose fiber art as your particular medium of creative expression?

Fiber is more or less soft. It covers a huge range of textures and possibilities. Ditto colors. I have two sewing machines, and one thing led to another. I like hand-stitching, but not exclusively. I'm not a purist in that sense, because colors also play an incredible role, as well as contrasts...

- When and how did you realize this was your greatest passion?

Actually, it just seems to be a natural extension of my life. There were no sudden revelations. I have always done things--sewn all the curtains in my flat, made a huge braided rug, sewn my own clothes, hand-sewn two Japanese kimonos, all the napkins in my kitchen, all the pillow covers, three blankets, ...

- What are your main sources of inspiration?

I am inspired by nature, by films, by culture and history, deep history, and by everyone who came before me, generations of women and men, and mostly women, my mom, grandmothers... I am inspired by the memory of holding a hand-sewn dress made by my great grandmother. Often, in the days that farm-women sat before a burning fire, they would finger-press the fabric they were hand-sewing together. Imagine sewing a whole dress like that. A wardrobe for the whole family.

- What do you aim to express through your work? What vision stands behind it?

Many times I don't recognize an aim, it is just a means of expression, of fullfilling a joy or sadness, or idea. But, if I wish for an effect, I would hope that the beholder, or the owner, or person looking, would feel a keen emotion. I would hope to spark even a small emotion. Hopefully a positive one!

- How has life affected your art and art affected your life?

They are symbiotic in nature--life--the highs and the lows, drove me into art, and art is a fuel for living.

- Art is about light and color! What are your favorite colors?

I love them all. I love the colors of Matisse and Kirschner. The Fauves, the Expressionists, and the Impressionists. I prefer saturated colors, and contrasts.

- Did you have a formal training in the arts or attend art courses?

I enrolled myself into the University Art Program and did a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in painting. But I recall taking painting and life-drawing courses outside of school, when I was a young child. My parents bought me art supplies, the way young kids today get electronics. I didn't have a gameboy. I had oils.

- Do you have a studio or home studio or particular part of your home you have devoted to your artwork? Where do you create your artwork?

I have a home studio--an extra large room with its own door and lock. I love it. But before that I worked at the dining room table. Believe me, the peace of mind you get from a secluded studio is enormous. That said, I can do a lot of creating in my head.

Thank you Dawn for this really beautiful and inspiring interview, and for sharing your creative journey and inspiration! There is so much love and passion in your work, and let me add that I love your beautiful photography, it's art in itself! Thank you for making us dream with your work, and we wish you continued joy, inspiration and success with your life and art.

You can all find Dawn's wonderful work in her Etsy shop LaTouchables. And you can get to know more about her work and inspiration in her beautiful blog.

Artist Interview: STEPHMEL

Welcome to my April Artist Interview!
My new interview takes me to Athens, Greece, where I meet Stephania, the talented artist and lovely person behind Stephmel and le Petit Foyer. As soon as I ran across Stephania's photographic work on Etsy, I was bewitched. I love the dreamy, nostalgic atmospheres Stephania is able to achieve with her photographic artwork, the often oniric character of her images takes me back to long lost atmospheres and to childhood dreams. Her images touch me deeply, they speak directly to the heart, they bring back memories and convey feelings and evoke atmospheres.
Stephania is a full-time working artist and she keeps a workshop and small gallery in her native city, Athens. Mostly known as a photographer on Etsy, Stephania is an exquisite and passionate painter as well, which explains the painting-like character and feel of her photography. And it is very interesting to know that her main profession is related to Eastern Orthodox religious art, where she works in painting and restoring icons.
She tells me: "I wanted to add that I am a huge fan of your country too, which I have visited many times and will never feel tired visiting again :) I also have Italian roots from the part of my father. I guess that my love is obvious in my photo gallery :)"
Meet Stephania! Here she shares her artistic journey and inspiration with us!
Welcome Stephania!

- How did you choose the lovely names for your two Etsy Shops, Stephmel (for your photographic art shop) and le Petit Foyer (for your jewelry shop)?

- Stephmel is composed of the first letters of my name that I combined with the first letters of the name of my beloved dog Melody, my sweet companion for eight years now. Melody has followed me patiently in many photo sessions since my first steps in photography and I just felt to show her my gratitude this way.
Le Petit Foyer was a result of a longer search. Before starting my jewellery shop, I had dreamed of a little corner with warm artistic atmosphere and lovely handmade things with a vintage nostalgic feel. This finally recalled to me the foyer of a small theater where visitors can visually enjoy a relaxing break and watch things happening offstage. I also love the sound of French words, so this was my favourite and most representative name.

- How did you first come to art and creativity? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?

- As a child I was encouraged from my family to express myself creatively. During my early childhood years, I discovered the magical world of images and the endless possibilities that come by holding a pen and a blank piece of paper. I can't specify a certain moment when this journey began. It was there for as long as I remember myself.

- You express yourself artistically through both photography and painting. What does each of these mediums mean to you?

- Painting and photography help me both to visualise my inner world.
Painting is more a monologue, a confession. It needs isolation, self-discipline and concentration.
Photography is a dialogue, to discover the hidden poetry in the world around. It is my personal escape and gives me a great feeling of freedom with its endless possibilities.

- When and how did you realize art was your real life path?

- As I mentioned before, I had always the feeling of walking along this path.
Through my school years, I used to draw in my free time and read books about art and painters. During college, I took art classes and finally discovered the mystic appeal of icon painting along with my partner some years later.
Photography came much later, when I received a Nikon D80 as a present and started experimenting in this field.

- What are your main sources of inspiration?

- I find incredible inspiration in urban living and all things that suggest the traces of human presence - old decayed buildings, dark empty streets, train journeys, harbours, street markets after closing time, abandoned places, but also in poetry, music and my own dreams and emotions among others. In my photos, I often try to capture the certain mood of a poem or a song.

- What do you like most about the creative process in both photography and painting?

- The creative process in both of them is an exciting experience.
In photography, I particularly enjoy to recreate my images with digital methods, so that the final result reflects my own mood and feeling. I often like to give them a painting-like effect and a poetic, dream-like atmosphere.

- You also create beautiful vintage inspired jewelry with a romantic and nostalgic touch, which you sell in your other Etsy Shop Le Petit Foyer. In some of your pieces you incorporate lovely miniature paintings, can you tell us a bit about that?

- Thank you for your kind words. I started making jewellery quite recently, when I introduced my first photo-necklaces, trying to make my work more accessible. This attempt had a warm response and so le Petit Foyer started. Creating romantic jewellery with a nostalgic touch gives me a huge pleasure as it drives me back to my childhood. In my hand painted miniatures I choose whimsical and nostalgic themes, such as teacups, hot air balloons, owls and anything that can be part of an imaginary world. I plan to work more on this section in the future.

- How has life affected your art and art affected your life?

- I always like to put feeling and soul in my work. Art is my refuge in sad and happy moments. It is also my every day's job and hobby. I could never imagine my life without it.

- Art is about light and color! What are your favourite colors?

- The refreshing sea green, the mystical quality of cobalt blue, the rich burgundy, the deeper shades of purple are among my obsessions. In photography I love the range of black and white tones accented with sepia for a nostalgic result.

- Did you have a formal training in the arts or photography or attend art/photography courses?

- I have a degree in History of French Art. During my college years I attended courses of drawing and painting in a private school. In photography I am self-taught.

- Do you have a studio or home studio or particular part of your home you have devoted to your artwork? Besides your online shops, you also have a “physical” workshop and gallery in Athens, can you tell us a little about it?

- I recently moved back to my old family house which I converted into a workspace. There is a large room for painting and printing and many more little corners for other jobs. There is also a small apartment at the basement where my family business is settled. We use it mainly as a gallery and showcase. I feel really privileged to be able to devote as much time and space as I need for my creative activities, which had been one of the big dreams of my childhood years.

Thank you dear Stephania for this really beautiful and inspiring interview, and for sharing your artistic journey and inspiration! We wish you continued joy, inspiration and success with your art and in your life.
Choosing an artist's artwork to show in the interview is always a hard task for me, but this time it's been particularly difficult because I feel a soul connection with each and every one of your photographs.

You can find Stephania's wonderful photographic artwork in her Etsy shop Stephmel, and her beautiful handmade jewelry in her Etsy shop le Petit Foyer.
