"As the Clouds Rolled In"

"As the Clouds Rolled In"
28"x22"
Oil on Canvas (Gallery Wrapped)
$1125

I live on the very edge of the city and thankful to be able to be in beautiful countryside in just minutes, so when I see the sky changing or beautiful clouds rolling in, I grab my camera and my keys and go!  Sometimes my Facebook friends will alert me to a great "paintable sky" and I just love that!  I'll get posts like "Go look at the sky! Quick!" and many friends send me photos of beautiful skies.

Once I ran into a friend at a store and we were both trying on boots.  She finished up and left the store.  The next thing I knew, she was running back to me shouting, "Take off those boots and come see this guy now!  Quick!"  I was throwing boots off thinking "What guy??"  George Clooney or somebody??"  No, my ears failed me.  She was urging me to come outside and see "the sky" not "this guy"!!

I appreciate the encouragement from friends and the fact that they're engaged in what I love to do!!

My Favorite Sky

"August Afternoon"
24" x 20"
Oil on Canvas

Well, I am in a complete mid-winter (please, oh, please, let it actually be late winter instead!) funk.  I am yearning for green fields, green trees, big cumulus clouds, late afternoon thunderstorms, painting outside with no blasted north wind....you get my drift!

I painted this from a photo I took late last summer.  Actually, this is about the fourth version I've painted of the same cloud.  It was a very photogenic cloud.  :)

Day 27/30: "Cloud Cover"

"Cloud Cover"
10"x10"
Oil on Canvas

This past weekend I had the pleasure of teaching a skyscape workshop at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.  What a wonderful bunch of artists!  They all did a great job on their paintings!

I did three demos and this painting is one of them.  We worked with a limited palette of ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow lemon or light, cadmium red medium, transparent red earth or burnt sienna and titanium white.  It sure does help in getting those neutrals we see in clouds.

Thanks for looking!

On the Easel *SOLD*

Here's one that has been on the easel and off the easel for a couple of weeks. I move it from the easel to the living room to another room...looking at the light, changing things here and there. I've used some glazing techniques on this which is something I don't usually do and it's been interesting to see the effects. I wanted to achieve the sense of humidity that we get here in Alabama.

I'm taking it with me to Art Talk tonight at the Montgomery Museum. This is a great program where local artists meet every couple of months and discuss and critique each other's art. They'll let me know if I'm on track!

Skies over Alabama *SOLD*

The skies over Alabama that I love to paint so much, the skies that inspire me again and again, were unfriendly to us yesterday. Please be in prayer for our dear state as we recover from so much devastation and heartache. It is so hard to watch all these details unfold. In spite of it, we have so much for which to be thankful. It really could have been so much worse.

Sunny days are ahead, I know. The people of Alabama are loving and giving and they support each other in good times and bad. I know their spirit will prevail! Thank you for your prayers!

Energen Art 2011 - part 2!

Here's the other painting I have in the Energen Art Show in Birmingham. The show runs through this Sunday, March 27. I'll have to miss the reception this year because I'll be teaching a workshop. The reception is always fantastic! The people, the food, the art...all are great. It's almost like a reunion of Alabama artist friends.
I am looking forward to teaching this workshop, though! I can't wait to meet the students who have signed up and I'm eager to teach them - hopefully something new & encouraging! Have a great week, everyone!

Energen Art Show 2011

This is one of 2 pieces I entered in this year's Energen Art Show in Birmingham. Thankfully, they both got in the show and I'm looking forward to it! It opens on March 14th if you're in the area and can stop by the Energen Building in downtown Birmingham!
I've been trying hard to capture the light in the sky and this painting, "The Edge of Light", is one of my more recent efforts. Coming up with names is hard for me! My friend and photographer of my art, Robert Fouts, and I came up with this name together...although we both thought it sounded like a soap opera!
