Morning on Walnut Street

What a lovely morning for painting the streets of Augusta!  It feels like stepping back in time to stand among these historic buildings, and paint.  Enjoying a leisurely breakfast provided by the shopkeepers at Emporium, I started this paintout a little late. Deciding on my subject was easy, because this scene called to me at first sight!  Getting all that information down in my reduced time was challenging!  I painted right up until Teddy pulled up the car beside me and I rushed to clean up and frame.  Even as I turned this in, I was wishing I could do more!  So, imagine my surprise when my painting won the Sponsor's Choice Award!  Painting number 3398 in 3398 days.

Bartle Hall Sky Towers

I've been wanting to work on several large watercolor batik paintings to show when I hang work in Kansas City venues.  After sketching this one in site, I've returned home for the layering of watercolor and hot wax.  The rice paper is so fragile, I must be very careful when handing it wet. It almost falls apart as I work it!  This delicate medium can be very challenging, but oh that light is luminous!  So worth the extra steps!  This one will hang in the executive offices of Blue Cross Blue Shield for the next 3 months. Suite 130

The charming Arts and Design District of Carmel is so very paintable!  This Main Street store front with the balcony made me think of Europe - and I chose my ink and watercolor for this subject.  I use an ink pen for my sketch, with little sketchy lines to get my composition.  This process took longer than usual with so many lines and angles!  Once complete, I started to wash in the color, getting a little free with my paints.  Sometimes it is more about how you feel than what you see!  Painting number 3165 in 3165 days.

Looking Down Main Street

I have never painted from the top of Main Street in Parkville before today. I parked way up the hill, hiking down in search of my perfect scene. As I approached the  French restaurant, I stopped, backing up to the middle of that side street!  I stood there for most of my line drawing, as it was the only way to get most of the shops  the train tracks, and the park beyond. With so many complicated buildings, this ink and watercolor painting took longer than my norm, but it was so worth it!  In my excitement to get out framed and start another, I once again I packed up and left my spot - without getting the pic on my easel! A helpful visitor saw me struggling to prop this against some stones, and offered to get a photo!  The glass is messing with the color a bit - but at least I have an image.  I'm so honored that this painting won the Main Street Purchase Award this evening!  Painting number 3120 in 3120 days.

Downtown Parkville

It was so fun painting in Parkville again!  Main Street is full of vintage charm - and trains are a frequent visitor on these rails!  I like to draw wide angle views of vintage towns, capturing as many buildings as I can within the paper borders.  I decided to paint from the other side of the tracks this time - since one always hears a train while here.  I painted from a spot nearby on my very first painting in Parkville years ago - and I was VERY surprised by so many trains!  Haha!  I should have had earplugs that day!  See this painting in person at the Cathy Kline Art Gallery in the old depot.  Painting number 2976 in 2976 days.

Old Bank Building at Night

SOLD
This old bank building stands proud and glorious on Main Street, as it has for well over a century. I love the lines and arches here, and they continue at the west side of this block.  This may be the very first thing I painted when arriving in town, many years ago.  It still calls to me. This year, I've painted it twice!  I don't think I'll ever tire of this beautiful building. I wish all buildings were built like this one.  Painting number 2500 in 2500 days.
