I'm back !

Hello ! 

I'm back or I think I'm back to this little space and I've missed it. 

I know I've said that in the past. . . but life gets in the middle, doesn't it ? 

Or 2020 gets in the middle . . . let's not talk about 2020, right ? 

Let's talk about our creative life and how grateful I am to have the hobbies I have. 

Since I wrote here last time I have evolved as a maker, a lot. . . 

I now have discover also the love for embroidery, and increase my passion for patchwork. 

but what I love the most is that I have so many crafts to fall into depending on my time availability,

depending on my mood and depending on where I am also. 

Like knitting is very portable, but sewing isnt, but then patchwork can be portable too, right ? 

Today I wanted to pop in to show you my latest creations which combine all of my passions at the moment, 

I love Christmas, is that a secret ? 

I know some people dont love it and to be honest I think what I love most is the run up to Christmas, 

more than the week where all is concentrated. 

I love October, November and December . . . I love the coziness of those months, I love it when is cold. 

Then, I know, I live in Madrid where we have gorgeous winters . . . I just love winter in Madrid. 

It is cold but we have blue skies and it is sunny for the most part. 

But I love rainy days too. .. there is something very romantic about rain that I love. 

I'm babbling . . .

Back to my creations. 

I was saying they combine all my passions. 

Xmas, embroidery, sewing, patchwork and knitting. . . 

The knitting part is because the bags are made to be project bags for knitting projects. 

But that is what I had in mind and what my moment of RELAX is. . . knitting. 

These are now up on my Etsy shop. 

Aren't they cute ? 

I think they are adorable ! 

I'm working on more but this all the Xmas fabric I had left at the moment. . . 

It was my dream to make my little Etsy shop and that dream stands now more than ever before. 

My main job is in the tourism industry . . . so that is now . . . well, let's leave at quite quiet. . . 

So back to my happy place. 

I have enjoyed so much making these bags, 

and 

I hope someone loves them too and makes someone as happy as I have felt while making them. 

By the way. . . while I was making them I was listening to Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong . . . .oh ! 

and dreaming of a better world, or a better future for all. 

Well now, I better go pick up my son from soccer training. . .

YEAR END REVIEW - Crochet & Sewing 2013

This is the first time I make a year end review and one of the reasons is because I have new followers who might have seen a picture or something I made but have not read the post. It is also a all-in-one place to go if you are ever looking for  something and also a good way for me to put my ideas in order. 

Let's start with what I made in crochet.

It seems number 1 (number 8 is the same blanket) was the star of the year, along with number 9 and lately number 11 has got very popular. 

Let's start: 

Esta es la primera vez que hago un resumen del año y una de las razones es porque tengo nuevos seguidoras que quizás hayan visto algo que haya hecho pero no han leído la entrada. También hace una entrada donde poder ver todo en un mismo sitio y una forma de poner mis ideas en orden.

My Sewing in 2013

Now turn for My Sewing:

The starts of this year from my sewing were number 1 and number 6, but number one got more attention and so I gave it the place of honour !

So this was my Sewing in 2013. My sewing machine has been unused since September and my hands are very much itching to get into more sewing. Each time I look at the fabric stash (lots of Tilda Fabric in it) I want to start my daughter's quilt, but sewing takes so much preparation time and space that I have not found much time lately for it and dedicated much more to crochet. 

Crochet is something I always keep on the sofa and does not need much preparation, space, it is much more spontaneous I think !

But I'm happy with my sewing so far, if I take into account that I only bought my sewing machine in November 2012, and have everything to learn yet, which is pretty exciting !!

Esta fue mi costura en 2013. Mi maquina de coser ha estado sin usar desde Septiembre y la verdad es que estoy deseando cogerla y coser mas. Cada vez que miro las telas que compre este año para hacer una colcha para mi hija (sobre todo telas Tilda) quiero empezar la quilt (o colcha) para mi hija, pero la costura lleva tanta preparación y no he encontrado el tiempo últimamente así que he dedicado mucho mas tiempo al ganchillo.

El ganchillo es algo que siempre tengo a mano en el sofa, y lo puedo coger en cualquier momento, no necesita mucha preparación. 
Pero estoy contenta con mi costura también, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que compre mi maquina en noviembre 2012, y aun me queda todo por aprender, lo que es muy emocionante !!

Now I wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014 full of health as I believe with health around us we can drive the rest !!

Ahora solo me queda desearos un MUY FELIZ AÑO 2014 lleno de salud, ya que creo que teniendo salud podemos conducir nuestra vida mejor !!

Hello !!

Hexagons. . . First time I saw them they were a mystery to me. . . then I started noticing them more and more in quilts, cushions, pin cushions, needle cases, you name it... and the thing is I was intrigued on how to make them.

So I went on the net and looked for some YouTube tutorials and started making them.

It seems I'm not the only one who is trying to learn something different, lately I'm seeing in other blogs that crocheters are giving a try to sewing, and the other way around.

I still don't know what I will be making with them, these are a test only as I want to learn properly first... but I will surely be using them for something nice. . . I will show you when it is finished.

I can say I got the Hexagon bug !!

Doll's Memory Quilt - Finished!

Hello everyone !! 

Hola a todas !!



Who was going to tell me when I wrote this that I was going to finish my first own quilt (although mini and only for dolls) just 4 months after I would finish my own hand quilted quilt !

The final push to make this came when I saw this wonderful quilt from Nana's Company (she inspires me sooo much). 

I hand quilted it and I have enjoyed it soo much, I loved it!

Quien me iba a decir a me cuando escribí esto que 4 meses después iba  a hacer mi propia colcha (aunque sea miniatura y para muñecas solo) acolchada a mano !!

El empuje final me lo dio el ver esta maravillosa colchita de muñecas de Nana's Company (me inspira tanto su blog . . .)

Como he dicho antes la acolche a mano y me ha encantado la experiencia !!

I want this quilt to be a treasure for my daughter and so it has little gorgeous details in it. 

Like her name embroidered or stitched in the corner. Now the beautiful part of this simple embroidery
is that is my daughter's own hand writing. She's just turned 5 and starting to write. I asked her to write her name and age onto a piece of paper and also I took a little flower drawing she had made the same day. 

Queria que esta colcha fuera algo especial y un tesoro para mi hija así que tiene preciosos detalles.

Como su nombre bordado en una esquina. La parte bonita de esto es que este simple bordado es la letra de mi hija. Acaba de hacer 5 añitos y esta empezando a escribir. La pedí que me escribiera su nombre y su edad en un trocito de papel y luego tome también una flor que ella había dibujado ese mismo día.

I transfered her writing and drawing on to plain white fabric and them stitched over it. Now, that little rectangle will be a memory forever of her handwriting at the age of 5 and that her mummy's stitching. 

Transferi su escritura y dibujo a tela blanca y repase con hilo y aguja. Ahora ese pequeño rectángulo
sera un recuerdo de su escritura con 5 años y el bordado de su mama.

Then I also went for it and labelled it with the same technique, but this time I copied my blog name from my own blog and stitched it with the date when I made the quilt. This way I will have a memory that one day I had a blog, in 30 year's time , God only knows where or what blogs will be. . . 

Tenia ilusión por poner etiqueta y lo hice con la misma técnica, esta vez copie el nombre de mi blog y los borde, incluyendo el mes en el que hice la colcha. Esto será un recuerdo de que un día tuve un blog, dentro de 30 años , quien saber donde o lo que serán los blogs ? . . .

I hope everyone had a lovely week and are looking forward to the weekend as much as I am. Weekends is when I can get some crafty time, really

Just wanted to share with you what I have been doing in the last 2 weeks. . .

Espero que hayáis tenido todas una buena semana y deseando ya que llegue el fin de semana, tanto como yo lo deseo. Los fines de semana es cuando puedo hacer mas cosas de labores, etc

Solo queria compartir con vosotras lo que he estado haciendo las 2 ultimas semanas . . . 

About two months ago I order some Japanese fabrics from Etsy and two weeks ago I got the chance to play with them and mix them with my own stash. . .

Hace unos dos meses pedí telas Japonesas en Etsy y hace dos semanas tuve la oportunidad de jugar un poquito con ellas y mezclarlas con las telas que ya tenia . . .

I am making a dolls quilt for my daughter's doll. It is a small project that will help me learn more about the process of making quilts and patchwork. 

I am now in the process of hand-quilting it so I guess it wont be ready until after next week at least. 

Estoy haciendo una colcha para las muñecas de mi hija. Es un proyecto pequeño que me ayudara a mejorar en el proceso de hacer colchas y patchwork. 

Estoy haciendo el acolchado a mano así que no creo que la termine antes de otras dos semanas, veremos . . . 

In the middle of it all, I made this pin-cushion, which I showed you earlier this week and also posted a tutorial. 

En el medio de esto, hice este alfiletero que os enseñe a principios de esta semana y tambien os puse un tutorial de como hacerlo. 

I increased my yarn stash (just a little bit) and this time with brighter colors that are not really the colors I would normally go for but I wanted to be a bit more adventurous for this project. 

In fact what I'm making here will be for Lucy at Attic24, she asked for help in her blog to make buntings for Yarndale and I immediately said I would love to help! 

Probably in the end I will send her a batch of these colorful triangules and another of my own colors. 

He incrementado mis lanas y esta vez he cogido colores vivos y brillantes, la verdad es que yo me suelo decantar siempre por colores pastel o suaves pero quería probar suerte con estos colores diferentes para este proyecto. 

En realidad lo que estoy haciendo aquí sera para Lucy de Attic24, ella pidió ayuda en su blog para hacer banderines para Yarndale y yo en seguida me uní al proyecto !

Quizas al final le envie dos lotes, uno con estos de vivos colores y otro con mis colores. 

And finally, yes, you are seeing double ?? but not really. My old shawl is turning into a new shawl. I am undoing the shawl and making it again. 
This time with 8Vs instead of 7 as the original pattern says, and I'm also increasing the length by 6 more rows. . . 

Y finalmente, si, estais viendo doble ?? no realmente. Mi antiguo chal será uno nuevo. Lo estoy deshaciendo y haciendo uno nuevo.
Esta vez estoy haciendo 8 Vs en lugar de 7 como decía el patrón original, y también voy a incrementar 6 vueltas el largo . . .

Ikea Chair Cushion - Finished !

Finally this is finished !! and I'm soooo happy with the result !!

Finalmente este proyecto esta terminado y estoy taaaann contenta con el resultado !!

el borde podría estar mejor hecho, pero, al fin y al cabo es solo el primero que hago !

Ok, now, how did I manage to make this. Having bought my sewing machine (the real one) back in November 2012 I had no notions of patchwork at all. 

Bueno, como me las he apañado para hacer esto sin haber hecho algo así antes ?? (y teniendo en cuenta que me compre mi maquina de coser el pasado Noviembre 2012??)

Here are the resources I used:

- 1/4' mark - I used the good advise of my friend Christine from Beanniequilts, and also found some other resources in the net: Craftsy has some free classes for quilting and I followed one called Block of the Month where they showed how to get the 1/4' mark on your sewing machine. 

- 6mm - este es el numero clave en Patchwork . . . o lo que se llama también 'un cuarto de pulgada'.
Tome el buen consejo de mi amiga Christine de Beanniquilts y también encontré otras buenas fuentes de información en internet: Craftsy tiene clases gratis con vídeos y yo seguí una llamada The block of the Month donde también enseñan a marcar los 6 mm de margen en tu maquina de coser.

Also, I went back to a book I had bought in Dublin about 10 years ago when I decided to learn patchwork but I did not have the materials, or sewing machine, etc and it ended up in the forgotten drawer. This book is called The Sampler Quilt Book by Lynne Edwards. I had not gone back to this book in these many years but when I remembered I had it, I started having a look at it and it has been a good help as it gave specific instructions for every step of the quilt making process.

Tenia un libro que había comprado cuando vivía en Dublin, el libro debe tener unos 10 años al menos y fue una época en que yo quise aprender a hacer patchwork pero no tenia los instrumentos ni tampoco maquina de coser, así que mi proyecto de patchwork acabo en el cajón olvidado. El libro se llama The Sampler Quilt Book de Lynne Edwards. La verdad es que nunca había echado mano de este libro en estos años y cuando empece a echarle un vistazo me ha sido de gran ayuda porque da instrucciones de cada paso del proceso de hacer una colcha de patchwork.

- Piecing the fabrics together:  well, the first thing I did was to buy me a ruler, a proper patchwork ruler.
cutting the pieces into little squares and with such a nice fabric was soo much fun !!
For piecing it together I used the following:

- La union de las piezas: lo primero que hice fue comprarme una regla de patchwork, ya que no tenia . . . y es esencial para cortar la tela en eses cuadraditos que veis y la verdad es que me he divertido un montón cortandolos, sobre todo con una tela tan graciosa como esta !
Para la union de los cuadraditos he usado los consejos de las siguientes paginas (todo esta en ingles):

• Crazymomquilts blog - she has a section of Quilt Making Basics, and this is exactly what I needed. Con una seleccion de consejos basicos para hacer una colcha, exactamente lo que necesitaba yo . . . 
• Quilting.about.com - has good tips as well. Con buenos consejos tambien.
• Diaryofaquilter Blog  - she has very useful tutorials on Making a Quilt from start to finish and also a separate Binding Tutorial. Tiene muy buenos tutoriales en  como hacer una colcha de principio a fin y un tutorial separado de como hacer el borde. 
• Learnhowtoquilt.com - have great video tutorials that have helped me to make this mini, mini quilt. Tiene tutoriales geniales en video que tambien me han servido de ayuda para hacer esta mini, mini quilt.

- For the sandwich part of the quilting I used the instructions on the book I had (mentioned above) 

and for the binding I used the tutorial in Diary of a Quilter, in fact I have gone back to this blog a lot over the making process.
- Para la parte llamada 'sandwich'  que no es otra cosa que juntar la parte del patchwork, con la guata y con la tela trasera . . . use el tutorial del blog Diary of a Quilter, en realidad he usado el tutorial de este blog un montón para este proyecto.

So, next will be to make another one for my son, but I'm struggling to find the right fabrics for  boy. 

Ahora tendre que hacer otro cojin para la sillita de mi hijo, pero me esta costando encontrar telas bonitas para niño.

I have enjoyed so much this project that I'm already thinking of making a quilt . . . and now I know I will make one one day, but maybe I have to practise first more on small projects like this. 

He disfrutado tanto de este proyecto que ya estoy pensando en hacer una colcha !! y ahora se que un día haré una, pero primero tengo que practicar mas en pequeños proyectos como este.

First Patchwork Project - Part 2 - quilting

Hello !

Blogger seems to be playing on me, I had this post scheduled to be out on today at 9am but instead it went yesterday, yet it did not come up in the side bars of people that are following my blog !
I dont know what happened and see if it works this time . . .hopefully

Did you enjoy the break ? Was there a break in the country where your live .
Here in Madrid, where I live we had Thursday and Friday off, it is what we call Holly Thursday and Holly Friday. . . in other areas of Spain, they take Friday and Monday off. . .

Parece que blogger me esta jugando malas pasadas. Puse este post para que se publicara hoy a las 9am pero salió ayer, sin embargo a mis seguidores no les aparecia que habia publicado una entrada nueva !
En fin, espero que esta vez funcione . . .

Que tal ? Habéis disfrutado de este puente ?? Ha sido fiesta donde vivís ?
Aqui en Madrid, donde vivo yo, ha sido fiesta el Jueves y Viernes, lo que llamamos Jueves y Viernes Santo . . . en otras partes de España, los días festivos son el Viernes y el Lunes. . .

I'm so happy today ! but happy in a crafty way, if I can say that . . . remember this post here where I had doubts or lack of confidence in being able to make patchwork or/and quilting ?

Hoy estoy muy contenta !! Contenta desde el punto de vista de 'costura', si es que se puede decir eso. . . os acordáis de cuando aquí tenia dudas o falta de confianza en poder hacer patchwork y/o acolchado ?

Well, during this break I have finished quilting this little piece that will become a cushion for my daughter. It will be a cushion for a chair. Throughout the whole process of cutting the pieces, piecing it together, making the sandwich (as the quilters say), I have felt that lack of confidence and fear in every single step of it. 
But as I was achieving each step of the way, and I have enjoying so much the whole process . . . 
There has not been a single moment of frustration in this project. . . maybe I have also learnt to be more patient and do each step at a time and research throughly before embarquing in the next step of the process. 

Durante este fin de semana he acabado el acolchado (quilting) de este pequeño proyecto que será un cojín para mi hija. En todo el proceso, desde cortar los cuadraditos, coserlos, hacer el sandwich (como dicen las expertas en Quilts y Patchwork), he sentido cierta falta de confianza y miedo. . .
Pero no ha habido ningún momento de frustración . . . quizás también he aprendido a ser mas paciente y hacer una cosa a la vez e investigar mucho antes de continuar con el siguiente paso del proceso.

Now the next part will be the binding. In my next post about this project I will put all the resources I used to learn to make this and of course ! the final result of the project . . . which I hope will go as smoothly as the previous steps making. . .

La próxima parte sera poner el remate, que es como un biés pero que va cortado en recto, al hilo y no al biés así que técnicamente no es un biés. Espero que esta parte vaya tan bien como ha ido el proyecto hasta ahora. En la próxima entrada que escriba sobre este proyecto os diré que fuentes he utilizado para aprender a hacer este tipo de proyecto y claro ! el resultado final !

First Patchwork Project - part 1

I have finally come around making my first 'proper' patchwork project. Although it is still at the first stage. It will be a cushion for my daughter but I still have to decide about the borders and how to go about the rest of it.

Finalmente estoy haciendo mi primer proyecto de patchwork de verdad. Aunque solo tengo el principio hecho, será un cojín para mi hija y aun tengo que decidir que bordes voy a poner y como ensamblar el resto.

My first challenge was how to find that 'scant' 1/4' seam allowance all the quilters in blogland were talking about.

Mi primer reto fue como encontrar ese 'margen de 1/4 de pulgada o 6mm del que todas las expertas hablan, pero en mi maquina.

I asked in the blog Sew Many Ways, Friday's Ask the world a question and also my friend Christine from Beanniequilts for advise as she has made a few lovely quilts already. They were so nice and told me different ways to find the scant 1/4' seam allowance in my sewing machine.

Pregunte en el blog de Sew Many Ways, los viernes tienen una cosa en el blog llamada 'Lanza al mundo una pregunta' , donde puedes preguntar cualquier cosa, ese o no relacionada con costura y también pregunte a mi amiga Christine del blog Beanniequilts, ya que ella ya ha hecho varias quilts de patchwork. Todas fueron super amables y me dijeron varias formas de encontrar ese margen de 6mm en mi maquina.

It is not perfect . . .I know. Look at the matching seams at the bottom right hand corner . . .see it ??
They don't match perfectly but I am happy enough and was scared to ruin the fabric by undoing the stitching. And taking into account that I bought my first 'real' sewing machine back in November, well , I'm happy with this result for this first project.

No esta perfecto . . . lo se. Mirad la costura de abajo a la derecha . . . lo veis ?? No coinciden perfectamente, pero la verdad es que me daba miedo que se rompiera la tela al descoserla y pense que bueno, era mi primer patchwork y no esta tan mal.

Las telas, son las que pedi en Enero a la tienda Sew Deerly Loved, las podeis ver aqui. Estas son las que venían en el pack de cupones de diferentes telas de una misma colección al que llaman Charm Pack.

Lots of us seem to be using this collection these days. I first saw the fabrics at the lovely blog from Helen Phillips, here. And I had to order them, I just loved them.

Once I had ordered them I then saw these cute projects at another lovely blog called, Happy Little Cottage, here  and here. .

And just yesterday saw the last post from another of my favourite blogs, My Rose Valley and Annette was using a couple of fabrics from this collection, here.

Y justo ayer vi en la ultima entrada de otro de mis blogs favoritos My Rose Valley, que Annette también uso un par de telas de esta colección para su ultima quilt, aquí.

Now I am unsure, of what to use at the borders, I am hesitating between 2 options:

or this one . . .with a dotty fabric
o esta  . . . con lunarcitos

I really get lost in this, I feel so unexperienced in matching fabrics for patchwork and quilting. When I see some quilts I love, I always think I would have never put those fabrics together, but yet they do work wonderfully in the end. . . does this happen to you too ? SeeI'm also unsure of the stripy fabric there . . . 

Realmente me siento perdida, y me siento tan novata en esto de poner las telas juntas . . . Cuando veo quilts de patchwork que me encantan siempre pienso que yo nunca hubiera puesto esa combinación así, pero sin embargo quedan fenomenal juntas . . . os pasa a vosotras también ? Tampoco estoy segura de la tela de rayitas rosa . . .

Then when I went yesterday to the local shop to buy the stripy fabric shown above, I saw this lovely cotton yarn and could not resist, so I bought it.

Y ayer cuando fue a la mercería local a comprar la tela de rayas de arriba vi esta lana de algodón y me encanto, no me pude resistir y la compre.

It was 3 Euros for a 50 grs skein but they have a permanent offer of 4x3 so I bought another in white and then 2 of the yarns I'm using in my daughters blanket , shown here.

Me costo 3 Euros por una madeja de 50 grs pero como tienen una oferta permanente de 4x3 compre otra en blanco y 2 madejas de lana para la manta de mi hija, podéis verla aquí.

When I got home and arranged my fabrics I realised that this fabric I had also ordered back in January goes perfectly with the cotton yarn I had just bought !! I got so excited about this . . .I have an idea of what to make with it but have to think about it and make the right choice as I love that fabric so much I want to make good use of it. I really want to find something where I can mix fabric and crochet . . .

Cuando llegue a casa y me puse a colocar las telas vi que esta tela que  tambien había comprado en Enero combina perfectamente con el hilo de algodón que acababa de comprar ! Y me puse muy contenta. . . tengo una ligera idea de que hacer con ello pero lo quiero pensar bien porque me encanta la tela y no tengo mucha. Me gustaría hacer algo en lo que pueda mezclar costura y ganchillo . . .

I'm also working on my first custom order from a friend. She needs to make a gift for a christening at Easter and insetad of buying s gift at a show, she asked me to make one of my personalised buntings for her ! It will be in soft pinks and greens, very girly and feminine. I will show it this week once is finished.

También estoy trabajando en mi primer pedido, de una amiga. Necesita hacer un regalo para un bautizo el fin de semana que viene, pero en lugar de comprar el regalo me ha pedido que le haga uno de mis banderines personalizados ! Será mi clásico, en verdes y rosas pastel, muy femenino. Os lo enseñare esta semana cuando lo termine.
