Unknown Metal Band - Demo

I have no idea who this is but i really dig it. It is gnarly thrashy crossover shit with big sloppy riffing guitar A-plenty! Exactly the kind os metal i love! Sort of sound alike Medieval or Black Task, thrown threw the Venom grinder with some NYHC stylings ala Sarcasm. Perfect. BUT, i have no idea who it is or how old it is. There is no info on the tape or the cover. Juding by the worn cover with no writing on it, it could be vintage 83 to 86 or it could be kids doing a modern take on the old school shitz, i really don't know. I don't even know where i got it from. I just found it in a box and was like, hey i wonder what is on here. It's only 3 songs and it's over fast but man this thing shreds. If anyone has ANY ideas who this is or when it came out feel free to leave a comment!!!!

Dim Mak - Demo

Dim Mak is a death metal band from New Jersey. The band was formed from the ashes of Ripping Corpse, by guitarist Shaune Kelley, vocalist Scott Ruth, and drummer Brandon Thomas. Thomas left the band sometime after the release of Intercepting Fist to later join The Dying Light.

The band's lyrical and thematic inspirations include martial arts, Bruce Lee, human rage and violence, Lovecraft's Cthulu Mythos, battles, etc.

Pretty sure these are different mixes from the Enter The Dragon album. They sound different to me. Not sure of the year but if it's before the Enter The Dragon album has to be around 1992 or 1993.

Also, even though is says No Rope A Dope on the cover only the first 3 songs are present. Sorry....

Chaindrive - 3 songs - 1992 Cameltoe Productions

Funny story about this band and an encounter with the police i had. My old band played with these guys once and i bought a shirt from the band because i liked them. The shirt was a graphic drawing of a 3 way gay orgy and all the dudes were dressed up like cops and underneath it said "PIGS SUCK, FUCK 'EM". I got pulled over by the cops wearing said shirt and it was not a pleasant experience... Ah, to be young again.

No cover or track list for this one. If anyone has any info feel free to drop it.

Helen Shapiro - Demo

Throw equal parts Frank Zappa, Primus & Black Sabbath w/ some punk rock and thrash metal thrown in for good measure and you might get close to Helen Shapiro. Great band to see live and great guys. Bass player Tony Ricci was a close friend back in the day and took trips out of town with my old band Godspeed (He had a truck) and even played sax on our record "Ride". I think he moved out west and i aint heard from him since. Maybe, he will read this and get in touch!?! I still have my Helen Shapiro shirt with the cover of this demo on it.... strangely over the years it shrunk and doesn't fit anymore but it aint going anywhere. Hard to believe that this shit all happened over 20 years ago.... I only wish that we all had iPhones and video technology at our finger tips back then like we do now so more of the shit we did was documented. it's all lost to time and memory and these memories are fading as time goes on.... This was recorded at Subterranean Sound in Long Branch by Stacey Phelon where everybody from the shore recorded. And the members were Rob (Secretious) Avison, Jon (Flagpole) Baron & Tony (Cow) Ricci. If anyone know where Tony is tell him to drop me a line!

Boneless - 1991 Demo

Sorta punk rock & roll from South Jersey. Boneless put this tape out in 1991. The Seattle "grunge" element is totally present. Don't let that put you off. This is a pretty cool little mix of punk, grunge, metal, art rock & plain old rock and roll. They sounded great live after 12 beers and a few shots.

Penance - Bridges To Burn

Killer Doom Metal from Pittsburg from Long standing doomers Penance. Bridges To Burn from 1998. I've been lucky enough to see these guys (and girl) a few times and actually call them friends.

This shit rules. DOOM ON!

Wiki info:

Penance was an American doom metal band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

PENANCE began in 1989 with the members of Pittsburgh area band DREAM DEATH moving more solely in a classic Doom direction. Drummer Mike Smail, guitarist Terry Weston, and bassist Rich Freund (who had replaced original bass player Ted Williams in Dream Death, following Williams' departure to another local band, EVICTION) recorded the "LIVING TRUTH" demo, with Brian (Lawrence) Goodbread originally a guest member. One of these demo tracks, "Contemplation", was on the RISE ABOVE RECORDS compilation: "DARK PASSAGES", and Mike Smail would later record with Rise Above owner and ex-NAPALM DEATH vocalist Lee Dorrian, on CATHEDRAL's debut album "FOREST OF EQUILIBRIUM".

With Brian Goodbread (himself a founding member of Dream Death) handling vocals and rhythm guitar, PENANCE recorded and released "THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED" on Rise Above Records in 1992, and would go on and tour Europe in support of the album the following year, alongside fellow doom titans SLEEP and CATHEDRAL. Goodbread left the band before the tour, and Lee Smith became the group's singer, with Weston being backed by CATHEDRAL'S Gaz Jennings on rhythm guitar for the tour.
After returning to the states, Penance were free to sign with another label and would do so with CENTURY MEDIA, who had expressed interest in the group before Penance released "The Road Less Travelled", with Rise Above. New members Lee Smith and Frank Miller were on board following the departures of Goodbread and later Freund, and this line-up recorded 1994's "PARALLEL CORNERS". With better production and a broader release, the album helped the band to gain more fans worldwide. "Parallel Corners" was later hailed by Martin Popoff in "The Guide to Heavy Metal" as one of the top five "post-Sabbath" albums ever released.

Sometime after Miller left the group, and Lee Smith ran into visa issues, subsequently having to return to England, Weston and Smail would eventually begin working with vocalist Brian "Butch" Balich. In 1998 the band recorded and released the "BRIDGES TO BURN" demo, with a little help from Brian Goodbread, who played bass on the recording. The demo let fans and record labels know Penance was still active and working on new material. With new bassist Ron Leard on board, the band would release their next full length album, 1999's "PROVING GROUND", themselves. This same line-up would also record the "TURN FOR THE WORSE" demo in 2000, which featured songs later released on "ALPHA AND OMEGA". The band's eventual new label, MARTYR MUSIC, would remix, remaster and re-release "PROVING GROUND" in 2001.

2001 would also see a new Penance offering released by Martyr Music, with a new line-up as well. Ex-NOVEMBERS DOOM and MYTHIC bassist Mary Bielich, and guitarist Matt Tuite, formerly of WICKER MAN and MUSTACHE, joined Smail, Weston, and Balich for "ALPHA AND OMEGA". The arrival of the two new members brought in fresh viewpoints and influences to the band, and a bit of a positive shift in mood can be heard on the album.

2003 saw the release of "SPIRITUALNATURAL", again with Martyr Music. Founding member Terry Weston would leave at some point during the production of the album, but co-wrote and played on a few of the songs heard here, while Matt Tuite contributed a good portion of the music to this very vital final album. HUMBUCKER guitarist Dave Roman was recruited to join the band and contributed to the songwriting as well. This line-up would see Penance's return to Europe that same year. Penance would later disband, with its members heading in different directions. In 2004 drummer Mike Smail recorded albums with INTERNAL VOID, the legendary PENTAGRAM, and now operates his own drum shop in Kittanning, PA. Butch Balich fronts the metal bands ARGUS and MOLASSES BARGE in the Pittsburgh area, while Mary Bielich and Matt Tuite joined BEHIND ENEMY LINES, an Anarcho-Crust punk band, also based in Pittsburgh. Matt Tuite has since played with THE EVIL MACHINE as well, and both Tuite and Bielich are members of DEL RIOS and THE MUD CITY MANGLERS.

In April 2007 PENANCE played the DOOM OR BE DOOMED festival in Baltimore, Maryland, with Smail, Weston, and Balich being joined by Dave Roman on bass. Smail and Roman would go to record the UNDER THE SUN album "MAN OF SORROW" with Dennis Cornelius in 2010.

Various - People Are Hungry Compilation Volume 1#

People Are Hungry Compilation Volume 1# from 1986 on Inward Visions Records. Carl Casanova from Psycho Sin was the man behind IVR and put out a bunch of comps back in the day. This was done with all local bands from the NY & NJ area and was supposed to help open up a soup kitchen in Jersey City New Jersey. I doubt that ever happened as i can't image these sold all that well...!? Anyway this is a fun romp and brings me back to those days. The quality is a bit dubious, as these i'm sure were all hand done by Carl is his bedroom. These early School of Violence tracks kick ass! Also: Beware seems to be Psycho Sin in disguise????

1 Beware – Riot In The City
2 Beware – The Livin' Dead
3 Mechanical Bride – No Destination
4 Chronic Fear – Discrimination
5 Chronic Fear – No Fear
6 Social Decay – Too Young To Die
7 Social Decay – Open You Eyes
8 Psycho Sin – Life's Gettin' Ridiculous
9 Psycho Sin – Ronald Reagan Must Die
10 Psycho Sin – Now
11 Psycho Sin – Bonzo Fucked Reagan

School Of Violence - Live Demo 1986

A great live demo tape from 1986 by School Of Violence. This is right around the time Social Decay played w/ them at CBGB. Here is a great histoty of S.O.V. - Stolen from their myspace page: SCHOOL OF VIOLENCE were formed in 1983 in NYC by guitarist Stegmon Von Heintz. Corey Clark (later from Warrior Soul) their first drummer. Corey was replaced by Kerry Riley, who drew S.O.V.'s original artwork, and contributed to their earliest songs. By 1984 they had enlisted bassist Rick Stone, drummer Willy and vocalist Paul Toxic, Jr. Paul wrote many of S.O.V.'s first songs, but was later kicked out of the band, and replaced with gravel voiced Ohio native Brian Childers, formerly of San Francisco based BOMB. Brian recorded two demos sith S.O.V., one a live "Off The Board" tape recorded at CBGB in 1986, the second a studio demo engineered by Don Fury. After a gig at The Ritz in NYC, Chris Williamson almost managed SOV, as did the manager from DRI. S.O.V. were courted and signed for a seven album record deal by Death Records, but midway through negotiating the appearance of their track "Religion" on the Complete Death II compilation, Brian left S.O.V., later to form CRAWLPAPPY, a band who in their short, illustrious career included ex members of bands as diverse as PRONG and ALICE DONUT. Brian's absence from S.O.V. as Complete Death II's release neared, and Steg's interstitial duty as front man, are why Steg is credited with vocals on this comp, when it is Brian who is featured. Bassist Rick Stone had also left early on in negotiations with Death Records, and, against his own better judgment, Steg brought in vocalist Karl Agell, formerly from Connecticut based SEIZURE, who appears on S.O.V.'s first and only album, "We, the People...?" The album received scant distribution, and the band little tour support. Rick Stone was briefly replaced by a stand in bassisd, George, who got hit by a cab early in his tenure. S.O.V. was set to tour in support of the album, so it was time to summon Scott Helland, one half of the musical tag team behind Massachussetts based OUTPATIENTS, who learned their set in all of two weeks. On returning from the tour, Scott Helland was joined by brother Vis, bringing S.O.V up to a 5 piece. Karl Agell then left S.O.V. to join CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, and appeared on their album "Blind", and in their video "Vote With a Bullet", before forming his current band, LEADFOOT. Reed from COC played drums after Karl left when Mark missed a gig. Brian was also up for COC, whom Steg had reccommended over Karl. Nobby from Broken Bones tried out to fill Karl's position on vocals, but Steg found it necessary to resume pulling double duty as frontman. Soon Mark left S.O.V. to join WARRIOR SOUL, bringing the band's entire history full circle. Ron Swenson, former manager of the Plasmatics, managed SOV towards the end of their career, but without Mark on drums, S.O.V. disbanded in 1990. PLEASE NOTE: Drummer Mark S. Evans is now deceased. After his time in WARRIOR SOUL, Mark returned to his native England , and was out one night, when two men and a woman stole his leather jacket. Mark went after them. The trio attacked Mark, strangled him to death, and set his body on fire. Brian Childers died in 2007 from alcohol poisoning. Stegmon Von Heintz went on to form PSYCHO 69, and later, briefly, had a band with Uncle Al from Murphy’s Law, and Steg's son on drums, called SENILE, and another, called FAT NANCY. He now builds custom motorcycles for Felony Flyers, after a successful run with his own Kill City Choppers. And Rick Stone? Who can say? School Of Violence - Live Demo 1986

Time's Up - Life - 1993 Demo

1993 NJHC demo by Time's Up. A couple of these guys and a few friends jumped me at a Dead Guy show in Jersey once. I deserved it. I threw a bottle @ another kid and i took my lumps for it. No hard feelings. By 1993 hardcore had changed so much for me too really care too much. This is not my hardcore, but it has its place.

Not sure of all the members on this tape because none are listed and this is before any "official" releases but this is the previous band of Chris and John from Burnt by the Sun. Another GREAT NJ band.
