3 tips for mastering your decorating budget

I have recently had conversations with several people who seemed baffled about decorating their spaces. "I can't afford to redo everything." or "If I buy that chair I will have to change all of the furniture." were repeated.
I had a few ideas that I thought would be helpful to share here.

1. Keep the expensive stuff simple

The priciest items will stay in you favor longer if you keep them simple. For instance, custom window treatments can be the most expensive item in a room and chevron pattern that was trendy several years ago will seem super dated in another five years. Opt for fun fabrics on pillows or throws.
The same goes for flooring and upholstery.

2. Choose a "floating" color

What the heck is a floating color, you ask? My best example is an heirloom chair I had recovered in black velvet. It has lived in five different rooms in my house in five years. It works everywhere for me.

I also painted a bamboo dresser in black that lives in my breakfast room instead of hot pink so that I could use it elsewhere without a new paint job.
It does not need to be black. White, beige, gray and navy can work really well as your "float" color just make sure that you don't end up with everything in that color.

3. Patience

Rome wasn't built in a day and your living room will benefit from patience. Thoughtful consideration of your lifestyle and aesthetic are a start but it also helps to shop without expectations. If you go sofa shopping with the goal to choose that large piece by the end of the day you may regret that decision.
I once went into a junk shop (and I do mean junk) and there sat a gorgeous Sheraton style settee.

I inspected it for damage and even sniffed it. It was a very high-end piece for $350!! I was not shopping for furniture that day but took home a prized possession that I still love.
I have been guilty of the opposite only to find myself unloading that funky bowl or lamp that I bought because I was looking for accessories that day and bought just to avoid coming home empty handed.

So to recap, keep the most expensive items simple by choosing solid colors or subtle pattern. No trends unless you can afford to change them when you tire of them. Choose a color that works with everything else for items that you might move to other rooms. This includes tables, single chairs, ottomans and dressers.
Lastly, have patience. You never know what you will come across if you wait. Rushing out to fill your house will mean that you won't have a spot ( or funds) for the truly fabulous items that you will find over time.

Lamps that turn me on

Let's face it, Chris Spitzmiller lamps are the bomb-no?

In a pair they really help repeat a room's color story and I think they are darn cute.

I am all for top quality but there are times when a budget has to make trade-offs. The cool thing is that these table lamps that are every bit at darling as the Spitzmiller version are easy to get your hands on.

This version from Shades of Light is a bit more spendy at $449 but the colors available are bananas.

Shades of light also has this version in seven colors that is about half the price.

Evolution of a living room

One of a pair of mid century Duncan Phyfe style tables

When I bought this house I was sure that I would paint my living room a deep, slightly orange red, just like my last house. I thought I would reuse every bit of furniture in the same way too.
The way it came together surprised me and I only have one thing left to do.

I kept the Duncan Phyfe tables and this wonderful settee. I found that the light was vastly different and my stodgy style was evolving and classics could include modern pieces.
I played with different ideas in my head and settled on Sherwin-Williams Faint Coral, a barely there pink, as the wall color. This color doesn't like having its picture taken. Most of my living room photos look like the walls are beige.
I played with different art work and furniture arrangements, but the layout is tough. There is a very large opening to the entry way and a large set of arches perpendicular to that leading into the dining room.
Here are the things that led to my living room as it is today.

While I was in Culpeper, Va  at Georgie Mae's buying those terrific chairs for my dining room I found something that really took the room in the feminine direction that I was aiming for and it was a huge departure from things I normally like and it surprised even me.

I absolutely had to switch out the lighting.
There was one of those brushed nickel "boobs" in the living room. I replaced it with  this antique chandelier...

that I got on eBay for just $250. Those are big box store prices !
Next I bought these chairs,

here you see them reupholstered and repaired after a 5 month battle with the shipping company, which doubled their cost ! :(

Harummpf!

Next, I bought more chairs...
at a price that would have me in divorce court if my husband knew.
Don't judge, it was my own money.
All the while my windows had stupid mini blinds.
I worked in a drapery workroom for awhile and know how to make drapes myself but I just don't have the time or proper setup to "board" the drapes and make them properly, especially with a toddler about.
I bought ready mades and some trim. Read about it HERE.

I wanted Lucite rods but settled for an enormously more cost effective choice.

I snagged the brass-look rods and Lucite finials at Bed, Bath and Beyond for a reasonable price.
Around the same time, I ran into my local Salvation Army and fond this Korean chest for $15.

It serves as a table between the chairs that I, now love to sit in. They are so comfy.
The mirror got propped there and actually works. It reflects the back of the Korean chest that is covered with writing.

Let's talk about the art work.

Above the Bombe chest I have this abstract.

It is one of the few pieces of art that I have not tired of.

Over the sofa I had this piece by Jenny of MFAMB fame.

I like it but it wasn't doing it for me in the room as a result Helen's room is shaping up nicely for a 3 year-old.
I ended up with a painting that my husband loves and one that came from being in an enormously happy place.
He calls it "ED" The title is "Hatching a charmed life"
It is oddly very difficult to photograph.

Next is an antique, French impressionist painting that I bought for less than $30 on eBay.

I really love it. The frame is new.

I have all sorts of accessories that mean something to me.

The room is full of high and low but almost everything was a bargain like these $15 lamps from Walmart.
Coffee table must go

I totally love the black velvet bolsters I had made

This is pretty much the way it is now.
I know the rug is too small but I love it. The colors are perfect and it was my grandmother's.
The one thing that I hate is the coffee table.
Six years ago I was looking for the Duncan Phyfe style end tables and found an eBay seller locally that had some but they came with the coffee table. I had not even thought about the coffee table situation for my, then new, house so I took it figuring I'd deal with it later.
Well guys, its later and I can't make up my mind on anything.
There are too many tables that I love.
One of these days I hope to do a gleeful post on my new gorgeous coffee table.

I am happy with the room so far.
What do you think?

In search of birdbaths ** updated**

Is this Baccarat?

My husband and I have been on a bit of a bubbly kick.
Three evenings in a row we sampled different proseccos, Italian sparkling wine.
We really like Moet et Chandon but it is a bit much for an any old time cocktail.
We prefer the coupe style glass, or birdbath, to the flute.

Cheapie flutes on the left
I own five birdbath crystal glasses that I could swear I was told are Baccarat. They are really lovely and while I am a firm believer in using fine things if you have them, I am am reluctant to use these on an everyday basis.

We have been using my super cheap flutes that I bought for a buck a piece for a party that never happened. I have no problem using the nicer flutes it's just that we would rather use coupes.
That brings me to my Valentine's day gift idea.
The impossible to shop for husband of mine will be getting new or vintage birdbaths if I can find them in the next 48 hours.
Wish me luck!
Do you use  "the good stuff" regularly?
** UPDATE 13 FEB**
Yesterday I found a vintage set of four birdbaths at an antique shop. The dealer must wanted to git rid of them because they were marked down to $5!  SCORE!
I wrapped them up for Valentine's day along with an antique book and a vintage monogrammed box just in time to hear my husband open the garage door, that's why I have no pics.

A Friday trip

On Friday morning I had the urge to purge ... my closet.
I also thought of a few other things that I was on the hunt for and a quick trip to neighborhood stores turned into a minor trek to Ikea.

Ikea is about 40 minutes away without traffic.
So, armed with my camera and lollipops (they buy a lot of 2 year old time) I headed out.
It must have been the blue words and yellow arrows that confused me. It's not like I've never been there before but I went the wrong way. Not only did I skip the second floor showroom but I grabbed a weird and totally wonky wheeled cart.
The plan was to look at and feel a LACK side table to guess whether it could be painted.
I also wanted storage solutions--remember the urge to purge.
In all of my brain dead, seriously dumbass stupor, I forgot my camera until I got to lighting.
The saving thought was that I needed to run a few options by my husband.
Duuuuuuh.
Right about here I stopped idiot drooling and woke up.

I liked this pendant but have concerns about keeping it clean.

Love but not enough light for my kitchen table.
I looked at so many things and went away with thoughts on...
these ready made linen curtains that would work in my bedroom for $50 a pair.
Interesting aside-- for us "hang 'em high drapery snobs" Ikea  finishes the tops of all curtains (most bottom out at 98 inches) but leaves the bottoms undone. Also for the non-sewing folks they include iron-in hem tape.
Still a tad short for those that prefer a proper 4 inch doubled hem, but it beats the crap out of useless 84 inch curtains.
I also found many lighting ideas that need to be revisited with the hubster in tow.

I recalled O'verlays but could not recall which items they were compatible with.
Double DUH!

It was rather tiring.

But here is what I came home with.

An array of containers to liberate my closet from "dreaded droop" or my name for stacks of clothing and unmentionables that begin to slide about after a week or two and appear droopy.

Tell me this candlestick isn't groovy! I just wish it were orange.

This huge 21 x 21 frame. I used it to frame a vintage Vera scarf.
It was meant for the 2 year old's room but it has become a happy welcome when coming in the garage entrance.
I have another scarf I would like to frame too.
Ikea has frames and then there are real Ikea frames. The former are suited for and displayed in store as a great way to frame giant kid art. The latter are more on par with something you might buy at Bed,Bath and Beyond.
My 21 x 21 frame was only eight bucks but I wanted to make sure I liked it before I went hog wild.

I bought these for the 14 year old girl's room. Two windows at $14.99 each. Yay!
I neglected to buy hardware there.
Stupid.
Here is the one very smart purchase.... drumroll...
Somehow in the midst of all that yellow and blue signage I missed the kid area that I promised my little miss.
In my drooling search for LACK tables in the warehouse before the checkouts I saw this cutie for $14.99!!!!!
Santa should be so smart.
She hasn't stopped playing with it but to sleep or eat.
Bonus for me, it folds flat in literally 2 seconds so I can stash it when I want to be all cool,  like I don't have kid stuff in my house.
I think I am headed back today.
