Tall Dwarfs

Dogma (1987)

Tall Dwarfs can easily be named one of New Zealand's most creative bands, because the two members, Alec Bathgate & Chris Knox, live a 100 miles away from each other and used to write songs by the exchange of tapes including song demos. This proces makes the Tall Dwarfs' songs very profilic, tape looped precussions, feedback guitars, etc. based around minimalistic arrangements, detailed by their distinct approach.

Pumice

(2010) Pumice 10" / V0

"Some time ago, I got a message from Stefan Neville about this record: "I been workin on some recording for you. some dumb punk slop and some tape loop soup and a pretty love song." I couldn't describe the record better. It's maybe the end of an era for Pumice with his 8 track pushed to its maximum limits and dying soon after these recordings were finished. So the result is maybe one of the noisier Pumice records to date... with a pretty love song. Recorded in june 2009 in Sandringham, Auckland, NZ. And mixed in january 2010 at Mainz." doubtful sounds

VA Le Jazz Non

Le Jazz Non (A Compilation Of Nineties NZ Noise) (1996)  •  discogs

"If there was one disc I absolutely had to do on H/corp it was this one. While there really was no 'scene' at that point in NZ for this kind of work [and now there really actually is such a thing] - this compilation showed that a 'NZ noise' community existed at least in embryo. It was a pretty good geographical spread, with none of the South Island snobbery that marked Xpressway. Ironically as this was released H/corp was starting to become very determinedly international, and the percentage of NZ releases actually declined after this point. Of course, most people involved in this went on to have heaps of releases on other labels, so the job was well and truly done. Looking back, this does mark out a certain time and a shared aesthetic of some sort, as all good compilations do."  - Bruce Russell

Mrtyu!

"Imagine a fucked up cross-breed of Nurse With Wound, Khanate and Throbbing Gristle and you can start to imagine the sound of New Zealand’s Mrtyu! Mrtyu is Antony Milton of the PseudoArcana label, The Nether Dawn, a Black Boned Angel member, and a prolific solo artist with releases." (lastfm)
