The Waltones - Deepest
THE WALTONES
Deepest
1989 Medium Cool
Notes :
One of the most beautiful albums from late 80's period is ''Deepest'' by great Manchester band The Waltones.
Any band that have members as Mark Collins (later The Charlatans) on guitar and Clint Boon (later Inspiral Carpets) on organ (two of the most talented musicians from madchester era), must be great.
Clint Boon organ sound is evidenth on tracks as ''She's Everywhere But Here'', ''What's Going Wrong'', ''I've Got Nothing'', etc.
I've tried to find some info about this album on the net, here's most interesting :
'' The band consists of Alex Fyans (drums), Mark Collins (guitar), James Knox (vocals, harmonica) and Manny Lee (bass, backing vocals). Their debut release was the "Downhill" single, released by Medium Cool Records in April 1987, which, like the follow-up, "She Looks Right Through Me", placed on the UK Independent Chart. Third single "Spell It Out" gave them their biggest success, peaking at number 20 on the Indie Singles Chart. Debut album ''Deepest'' eventually saw a release in 1989, by which time they had lost momentum. The band also recorded a session for BBC Radio 1's John Peel Show in August 1988.
In 1990, the band moved to the Midnight Music label, and recorded a second album ''Re-invent the Wheel'' co-produced by Kevin Harris. After recording was completed, Fyans left the group to be replaced by Adrian Donohue. The band relaunched themselves as Candlestick Park. One single, "All the Time in the World", was issued from the album sessions, and a collaboration with Manchester-based House producers K-Klass was mooted. However the album was never issued and the band split, as Collins went on to greater success with The Charlatans. ''
'' The all-pervasive rise of Madchester stars The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets has latterly overshadowed the fact that the Manchester hinterland was nurturing its fair share of quality jangly guitar pop in the mid-to-late 80s. Along with The Railway Children and early Creation hopefuls The Bodines, The Waltones tilted at greatness in this post-Smiths/pre-baggy void, recording four singles and one album, The Deepest, for Andy Wake’s Medium Cool label circa 1987-89.
Ironically, it wasn’t the advent of Madchester that would directly sink The Waltones. Medium Cool’s distributor, Red Rhino, went bankrupt after The Deepest sold out its first pressing, leaving band and label to flounder before guitarist Mark Collins quit and joined The Charlatans. ''
