Golden - Wishful Thinking

GOLDEN
Wishful Thinking
1993 Icerink

Golden were a cornerstone of Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs short-lived Icerink mini-empire. The sweet girl group-inspired trio was a short-living mouthpiece for some great Saint Etienne-style Stanley/Wiggs compositions and productions. Their second (and last) single is a bittersweet affair. The lead track, "Wishful Thinking," was written by Jarvis Cocker and is a autumnal disco track with a fabulous hook and top-notch vocals. The "Trop Belles Pour Trois" remix of "Wishful Thinking" adds an extra layer of sad synths and tweaks the beat just a touch. The sad melody remains intact however. The third song is their most Saint Etienne song sounding like they just stripped Sarah Cracknell's vocals off and stuck Golden's on which was not a bad thing at all. "Babacool" is produced by Douglas Benford of Lovecut DB and is a pretty standard house track musically with the girl's lovely harmonies over the top. Not their best work but not unpleasant at all. Sadly, Golden totally disappeared after this single's release. Saint Etienne fans absolutely must add this to their collection and Pulp fans may want to check it out too for the Jarvis song.
