The Jack Rubies - See The Money In My Smile
THE JACK RUBIES
See The Money In My Smile
1990 TVT Records
Notes:
A deluge of critical hype - and a cool name - couldn't convince music fans that The Jack Rubies were doing anything original. Formed in London, England, in 1986, The Jack Rubies consisted of vocalist Ian Wright, guitarist Stephen D. Ineson, bassist Steve Brockway, and percussionist Lawrence Giltnane. Wright and Ineson were also the group's songwriters. Not in synch with the dance flavors of late-'80s British rock, the Jack Rubies produced derivative jangle pop with biting lyrics that hooked U.S. college radio. The haywire drums and sinister vocals of "Be With You" immediately landed on left-of-the-dial stations in 1988; the video for it also became a favorite of MTV's 120 Minutes. The band also released their debut album, Fascinatin' Vacation, that year. The group toured with They Might Be Giants and Modern English, and their second LP, See the Money in My Smile, appeared in 1990.
