Xibalba is the name of the ancient Mayan underworld that loosely translate to "place of fear." This is some heavy shit right here. In a nutshell, to me, a sludgy, doomy version of Pantera.

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain (1971)
One of my favorite styles of music is the amalgamation of psychedelic era sounds with the soul and strength of the black power movement. Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsies blew my young mind. Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and Live Evil was sold to me as "Black Panther's on Acid." Maggot Brain is up there in the catalog as well.
400 Blows - Black Rainbow (2003)
Just saw Big Business this week and the word from guitarist Scott Martin, who moonlighted in 400 Blows, the band is no more. So in honor of this news, here's their first album.
Lee Hazlewood - Requiem for an Almost Lady (1971)
This is just killer. Lee keeps it real like no other in the biz and makes the term "Fuck that bitch!" sound so eloquent and melodic.

Scorpions - Fly To The Rainbow (1974)
Ok, forget "Winds of Change." Forget "Rock You Like A Hurricane." This is before all that bubblegum nonsense. This is when they were just young fearless European kinder. Long-winded prog rock suites into rock riffdom.

Circle - Katapult (2007)
Circle is usually hard to pin down. Every album these fine Fins produce finds the lads exploring some new, exciting sounds that pre-existed only in their heads at one time. What gets me is that when I first heard this record I thought it was some long lost proto-metal soundtrack-esque gem.

Muddy Waters - After The Rain (1969)
In memoriam of Mr. Pete Cosey. Pete was session guitarist for Chess Records, blazing up R&B albums, before being drafted into Miles Davis' electric band in the early 70's.
This one here is a pretty gnarly blues record with some serious fuzzy guitar work. Very Hendrix like guitar voicings, meaning non-guitar guitar noises, and at same time very individualistic because even though this is 1969, he's been doing this before Jimi Hendrix started his solo career.

Loincloth - Demo (2003)
This is what's blowing my mind these days. Loincloth is a uber-heavy mathy prog instrumental monolithic sludgefest. I know alot of those adjectives can scare and/or bore people instantly but what sets these dudes apart from the grade is they've somehow taken all the best elements of these genres and made something amazing. So, in honor of their recent signing and LP release with Southern Lord, here's their first recorded demo from 2003.

Sandrider (2011)
I'm not in the business of breaking new bands but here's a modern group I just heard about on my most recent trip to Seattle. It had some of the dudes from Akimbo in it and it is some rocking shit. Fans of Big Business take note.
Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou-Dahomey - The 1st Album (1973)
Happy New Year everybody. I'm gonna keep it short and start unloading zips on you guys. This one is funky and psychedelic. Dig it!

Damon - Song Of A Gypsy (1969)
Baritone crooning over fuzzy psychedelia. I do have to admit, a lot of these songs start sounding the same after a good listen but it's totally worth the download for this track right here.

Yob - Atma (2011)
I normally don't heed to any metal recommendations by Pitchfork and I normally don't post new albums but this is badasssssss!

VA - Girls In The Garage Vol. 1 (1987)
Here's one out of eight-something volumes of all girl, all underground garage groups from way back when. A little twang, a little fuzz and a whole lot of female attitude. Dare I say it, adorable.

UNGAWA - 106.7 FM - Antwerpen, Belgium
Ungawa first appeared as a command that Tarzan used to communicate with that cute lil' monkey named Cheetah. And now it's here as a great radio show that airs Sundays in Belgium. If it's old, obscure, weird, lo-fi, etc. it has or will be played here. I came across this through myspace years ago somehow and managed to catch a point where you could download past shows but alas, nevermore. Here are the first four broadcasts.
