Film Inspiration: Aviator

Si os entra curiosidad por la vida de las grandes estrellas de antes y su magnificencia, la oscarizada "El aviador" es la mejor elección. Recoge veinte años de la vida de Howard Hughes (de 1920 a 1940), un adelantado a su tiempo que hizo una enorme contribución a los progresos en aviación. Leonardo Di Caprio es el encargado de recoger su vida marcada por un fuerte trastorno obsesivo-compulsivo que le llevará a perder la cabeza, sus escandalosos gastos en aviación y en la que sería la película de su vida, Los ángeles del infierno, y sus aventuras amorosas con las actrices Katharine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett), Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale) o Faith Domergue (Kelli Garner).

If you get interested about stars of the 30´s and 40´s, the oscarized "Aviator" is the best choice. Since 1920 to 1940, it relates twenty years of the life of Howard Hughes, a man that made a huge contribution to the aviation progress. Leonardo Di Caprio is the actor who plays, in an amazing way, his obssesive-compulsive disorder, (which will make him be out of his mind), his wastes on planes and on the film of his life, "Hell´s angels", just as his affaires with the actresses Katharine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett), Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale) and Faith Domergue (Kelli Garner).

El vestuario, de mano de Sandy Powell, es de quitar el hipo. No en vano ganó el Óscar al mejor vestuario en 2004. En entrevistas declaró que se inspiró en fotos de archivo para representar la fastuosidad de los vestidos, pero sobre todo en películas en Technicolor, concretamente en "Que el cielo la juzgue", donde la llamó le atención el contraste que lleva la protagonista, Gene Tierney, entre azul turquesa y rojo, que llevó a dos outfits de Beckinsale para Ava. Partiendo de esta idea, me gustó el aire masculino de Hepburn, así que tomé unos pantalones, le añadí una camiseta de terciopelo asimétrica y un broche de diamantes. El toque de rojo tan típico de la época lo dan los labios, los zapatos y el bolso. El contraste de color lo conseguimos en otro outfit, conservando los zapatos y el bolso y añadiendo un vestido en verde esmeralda (son casi colores complementarios) y los guantes míticos en negro.

The wardrobe, by Sandy Powell, is breath-taking, it deserves its Oscar in 2004. In interviews, she declared that she got inspired by old photos to express the magnificence of the looks, but above all by Technicolour films, in fact "Leave heart to heaven", in which she got attracted by the contrast between turquoise and red that the main actress, Gene Tierney, wears. These colours will be used in two outfits of Ava (Kate Beckinsale). Based on this, i liked the male outfits of Hepburn, so I kept a pair of pants with a velvet one shoulder blouse and a diamond brooche. The red touch is given by shoes, clutch and lips. The mentioned coloured contrast is used in another outfit, keeping the complements (except the brooche) and adding a green gown and long silk black gloves.

Para conseguir el look, el pelo es imprescindible, aunque necesitaríamos otro post para ver el increíble trabajo que han hecho los estilistas en esta película/To get the look, the hairstyle is essential, but we would need another post just to analize the amazing work of the estilists of this film.

Film Inspiration: Frida

Como sospecháis, si es que no la habéis visto, esta película narra la vida de la pintora mexicana Frida Khalo. La actriz Salma Hayek, en uno de las mejores actuaciones que la he visto, representa muy fidedignamente todo el dolor que acompañó a la artista durante toda su vida, desde los continuos escarceos amorosos de su marido, el también pintor Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), la poliomelitis unida al gran accidente de autobús que sufrió y las operaciones que acabaron por atarla a su cama, o su incapacidad para tener hijos. Sus pinturas, llenas de color, recogen ese padecimiento de una forma sublime, como cita Diego al final de la película, "su obra es ácida y tierna, dura como el acero y fina como el ala de una mariposa. Amable como una sonrisa y cruel como la amargura de la vida".

As you can suspect, this film relates the story of the Mexican painter Frida Khalo. The actress Salma Hayek, in one of her best performances, represents faithfully all the pain that devastated the life of the artist, from the infidelities of her husband, the painter Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), to the polio that suffered, joined to the bus accident and the surgery operations that made her end up in a bed until her death, or her disability to have children. Her paintings, full of colour, gather all the suffering in a sublime way, as Diego says at the end of the film "her works are acid and tender, though as steel and light as the wing of a butterfly. Kind as a smile and cruel as the bitterness of life".

Repasando algunas fotos de la auténtica Frida, me sorprendió lo fiel que es el vestuario al estilo de la pintora. De un estilo europeo en su juventud pasó a trajes folclóricos, más del gusto de su marido Diego. Ropajes llenos de brocados, de colores vivos. Acostumbraba a llevar la larga trenza alrededor de la cabeza, así como flores, pendientes y collares muy vistosos. Además, siempre poseía un chal que arropaba sus brazos. Basándome en esta idea, me gustó el contraste entre rojo y verde que viste el día de su boda, y manteniendo los estampados y los complementos mencionados, surgió este outfit, que en lugar de trenza, lleva dos horquillas con flores./ Looking for some pics of the autentic Frida, I got suprised by how faithful is the wardrobe of the film to the artist´s style. She changed her European clothes of her youth for ethnic and folcloric outfits, in order to satisfy her husband. Clothes full of brocades and strong colours, she used to have a long plait around her head and flowers. Her complements were always big and colourful necklaces and earrings, and a pashmina over her arms. Based on this idea, I liked the contrast between green and red of her wedding look, and keeping the patterns and the mentioned complements, I ended up with this outfit:

Film Inspiration: The painted veil

El velo pintado es una de las películas de las que acabas enamorado de todo, el argumento, los actores, y hasta los escenarios, que son sencillamente ESPECTACULARES. Basada en la novela homónima de William Somerset Maugham y ambientada en los años 20, narra la historia de Walter Fane (Edward Norton), un médico inglés que se casa con Kitty (Naomi Watts), una chica de una familia de clase alta que ve en el matrimonio la única vía de escape a su aburrida vida. Sin embargo, cuando se trasladan a Shangai, se dará cuenta de su error y acabará enamorada de otro hombre. Cuando Walter descubre la infidelidad, decide tomarse la venganza por su mano y acepta un trabajo en una localidad remota con el fin de paliar los primeros brotes de una epidemia de cólera. Un viaje que hará florecer el amor, dando sentido a su matrimonio y a sus propias vidas.

The painted veil is one of those films you fall in love with, from the plot to the scenaries, that are absolutely wonderful. Based on the homonym novel by William Somerset Maugham and set in the 20´s of the XX century, it relates the stoy of Walter Fane (Edward Norton), an English doctor who marries Kitty (Naomi Watts), a girl from a wealthy family who sees the marriage as the only way to escape from her annoying life. However, when they move to Shangai, she realises of her huge mistake and falls in love with another man. When Walter finds out her infidelity, as a revenge he accepts a job in a remote village in order to contain the firts outbreaks of a colera epidemic. A journey in which love will emerge, giving sense to their marriage and their own lifes.

Ésta última fotografía es la que me sirvió de inspiración para el outfit. Colores suaves, encaje, un par de chinos con cinturón tal y como lleva él, un chaleco de pedrería como los vestidos de noche de Naomi, zapatos planos (en rojo a juego con los labios como la bata que lleva en una de las fotofrafías anteriores) y bolso de inspiración oriental./This last pic was the one that inspired my outfit. Soft colours, lace, a pair of chinos with a belt like hims, an embellished waistcoat like the gowns of Naomi, flat shoes (in red, going with the colour of the lipstick, both inspired in the red night gown of one of the previous pics) and an oriental bag.

Film Inspiration: Nine

También fui una de las últimas en ver este peliculón, que si bien al principio me confundía por las idas y venidas de las mujeres en la vida del director cinematográfico Guido Contini, (Daniel Day-Lewis), al final me llevó un buen sabor de boca. Las actuaciones de las chicas son de quitarse el sombrero, y aunque mi favorita fue la de Marion Cotillard en "Take it all", la de Fergie en "Be italian" o la sensual de Penélope Cruz en "A call from the Vatican", me dejaron ¡patidifusa! Nicole Kidman estuvo sublime, pero esa mujer tiene un aura especial que la rodea, no parece terrenal. La que quizás estuvo para mí más en un segundo plano fue Kate Hudson. Todo esto, sin olvidarnos de la espectacular Sophia Loren como la "Mamma" de Guido y Judi Dench como la hábil mano de los trajes de sus films.

El vestuario, con la excusa de hacer una película dentro de la propia película, también me encantó, los trajes sobrios que sacan Marion o Penelópe, los exquisitos encajes de ésta última y el atuendo de Nicole a lo diva de los 40 (que me recordó muchísimo a Rita Hayworth, además de cuando en su actuación Marion se quita el guante a lo Gilda^^).

I was one of the last bloggers to watch this film, which drove me crazy in the beginning because all the women that appeared in the life of the cinema director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis), but at the end I found it amazing. The girls´shows are incredible, and though my favourite one was Marion Cotillard in "Take it all", Fergie in "Be italian" and the sensual Penelope Cruz in "A call from the Vatican", took my breath away too. Nicole Kidman was sublime (she seems to be an angel o something like that) and in my point of view, Kate Hudson kept a low profile. We must stress too the performance of the refined Sophia Loren as the "Mamma" of Guido, and Judi Dench as the tailor of Guido´s films.

The clothes are amazing, from the smart clothes of Marion and Penelope, to the exquisit lace of the Spanish actress and the gown worn by Nicole, who reminds me of Rita Hayworth (Marion does too when she takes is glove off like in the film of Gilda^^).

Una mezcla de rosa + negro, de elegante y distinguido + sexy (sobre todo por los corsés y los ligueros), de seda + encaje, de plumas + cristales, y voilà! ya tenemos nuestro outfit inspirado!/ A mix of pale pink + black, smart and refined + sexy (above all because of the corsets and the suspenders), silk + lace, crystals + feathers and voilà! Our inspired outfit!

Film Inspiration: Coco avant Chanel

Seré de las pocas bloggeras que no haya visto todavía la película, al menos hasta ayer. No necesita presentación porque todas la conoceis, y la verdad tenía muchas ganas de verla para ver cómo orientaban el argumento, aunque no esté muy puesta en la vida de Coco (o Gabrielle^^). Me llamó mucho la atención el vestuario, y sobre todo el hecho de que el estilo de Coco fue una búsqueda constante de la simplicidad frente a los excesos y las prendas emperifolladas de la época. Audrey Toutou lleva un predominio de looks masculinos (de todas las prendas que le roba al barón Étienne Balsan, representado por Benoît Poelvoorde), de los cuadros y de las rayas de las camisetas de los marineros que enamoraron a Coco en su viaje a la costa con el británico Arthur "Boy" Capel (Alessandro Nivola).

I will probably be one of the few bloggers who hadn´t watched this film, til yesterday. Everyone of you knows the plot, so it doesn´t need any kind of introduction. The clothes took my atention, above all the fact that Coco ( or Gabrielle^^)´s style is based on a permanent search of the simplicity against the feathers and all the jewellery that used to adorn the typical clothes of the epoque. The main actress, Audrey Toutou, has most of her looks based on male clothes (the ones that take from Étienne Balsan, played by Benoît Poelvoorde), checks and the stripes from the sailors´s tees with whom Coco falls in love during her journey to the coast with the British Arthur "Boy" Capel (Alessandro Nivola).

Para el outfit inspirado, los canotiers y el bolso de mimbre que lleva hizo que me fuese bastante fácil encontrar accesorios similares, ya que lo tenemos en las tiendas ahora mismo^^. Con un gusto por lo negro y una mezcla de estampados, escogí rayas y cuadros en dos outfits diferentes (el de la izquierda es un total look de Zara, el de la derecha de Topshop). Los zapatos los podeis encontrar en Pull and Bear, el bolso (que es un clon al de la película) en Blanco y el sombrero en Zara (que también está en oscuro, al igual que el que lleva Coco)./ The boater hats and the wicker handbag that Audrey wears were easy to find for my inspired outfit because we have both of them in shops right now. The rest of the look is a mix of checks and stripes, all in black, as she liked (the left one is a total look from Zara and the right one from Topshop). The sandals are from Pull and Bear and the boater hat from Zara (you can also find in dark as the one of the film). The handbag is from Blanco.

Film Inspiration: The illusionist

Pocas películas tienen tanta magia como El ilusionista, y no solo por la obviedad, sino por el encanto que desprende todo, desde el argumento a la escenografía. Ambientada a comienzos de s. XX, Edward Norton representa a Eisenheim, un mago que con sus dotes consigue cautivar al público. Muchos hechos se cruzarán en su camino. Entre ellos, será acusado de poseer poderes sobrenaturales y, además, se reecontrará en un espectáculo con el amor de su vida, Sophie (Jessica Biel), quien resulta ser la prometida del mismísmo heredero del imperio austríaco, Leopoldo (Rufus Sewell). Con una mezcla entre amor y misterio, el final resulta completamente inesperado.

Very few films have the magic of The illusionist, not only because of the evidence, but also because of the charm of everything, from the plot to the scenography. In the beginning of the XX, Edward Norton plays Eishenheim, a magician who captivates the public with his skills. However, he will be acused of sobrenatural powers and in a show he will meet again the love of his life, Sophie (Jessica Biel) who is in fact the fiancée of the heir of the austriac empire, Leopold (Rufus Sewell). Love and mistery will take you to an unexpected end.

Y para el outfit inspirado, me gustó una mezcla del encaje que lleva Jessica Biel y lo militar de Rufus Sewell. Algo femenino y masculino, pero sofisticado y elegante a la vez. Como toque de color, los zapatos y los labios, inspirados en la capucha roja. En cuanto al colgante en forma de corazón, es un recuerdo que une a Sophie y Eisenheim, y lo quise mantener porque da un encanto especial al look./ And for the inspired outfit, I liked a mix of the lace that wears Jessica Biel and the military jacket of Rufus Sewell. Something feminine and masculine but sofisticated and elegant at the same time. As a point of colour, the shoes and the lips, inspired by the reed hood of the first pic. About the heart necklace, it´s a remember of Sophie and Eisenheim, and i wanted to keep it for my look because it gives a special touch.
