Onibaba

Director: Kaneto Shindo
Country: Japan
Date: 1964
Runtime: 1h 42min
Format: .avi with .srt subtitles

Here's a movie that's a bit hard to define and it's not exactly Christmas material but whatever. Some say it's a period drama, some say it's a horror movie and some say it's an erotic horror. I'd say it's a period drama first and a subtle horror flick second.

The movie is set during the Nanboku-cho period (which is like mid medieval times in ol' Europa) but this is no movie of samurai bravery or acts of just vengeance. The movie is about two women who live by sneakily killing soldiers and looting their equipment (as you would in any normal RPG). Their lives are very basic and they are very poor so it's something that the movie displays really well through character interactions and sets. This is where the "horror" part comes because there is no supernatural force here, the people are the horror and their deeds are atrocious no matter what they do. In contrast to human ugliness the scenes of nature (the whole movie is in a dense tall grass field) are beautiful to behold. Beautiful and sort of menacing or even indifferent to humans that run around it.

This might be a bit too slow for everyone to watch. It is kinda samey but I like the feeling and the atmosphere that the movie delivers. There's something in here that I really like but I can't really put my finger on it. I guess I just like this sort of thing for its macabre theme and feel.

Memories Of Matsuko

Director: Tetsuya Nakashima
Country: Japan
Date: 2006
Runtime: 2 hours and 10 minutes
Format: .avi and with .sub English subtitles

I've been going through my film and animated film posts and I noticed a pattern which is: most of them are either:

a) depressive as fvck
b) melancholic as fvck

I guess I like those the best. But! There's still hope! I might like some movies that present the other spectrum of emotions. Emotions like physical abuse, drug abuse, torture and, uhh, happiness? I heard of that somewhere, people even make movies about it. About happiness. Why don't I check a movie out that's happy? I looked around and this is what I ended up liking. But the problem is that despite the really colorful tones and delightful merry characters this is depressing as fvck. So we're back to square one. Eh, who gives a fuck anyway.

Memories of Matsuko is a story about a guy who has an aunt called Matsuko. He doesn't know very much about her but she died and he has to clean her apartment and crap like that. Through this cleaning he gets to know her aunt and how she lived through her life. He slowly but gradually pieces together her painful life into one big mosaic. So the story is actually focused around Matsuko but from the perspective of memories and interpretations by other characters. This is what generally makes the movie work and it works well for the most part. Since they are memories the scenes and events are highly stylized which gives a lot of room for social commentary and general Japanese weirdness. You know, the usual things they do.

The problem with all this is when the movie does something bad it gets really awkward and ruins the immersion of the story. Some of the singing musical bits were tedious for me to watch. But that's maybe because I don't like singing in movies. Because this doesn't happen that much often it kinda magnifies the effect when it does happen so it makes it that much worse. Aside from that there's really not that much to complain about. The acting is fairly good but it's still in that kinda strange Japanese way of acting. I'm not sure I can pinpoint what's so strange about it. It's just different.

Overall this is a very nice long film. It's not perfect and it might not click with you due to the over the top stylizing and you might miss some jokes/things if you're not that familiar with the culture. But those points should not ruin the whole film. Not in the least. In it's core the story is very universal.

Blood the Last Vampire

Director: Hiroyuki Kitakubo
Country: Japan
Date: 2000
Runtime: 48 minutes
Format: .avi and with .sfv English subtitles

This was one of the first anime I saw so my opinion is probably a bit biased. This might piss some people off (perhaps purists?) but I really enjoyed watching this short movie. I admit that this has a lot of flaws but I still think it's a nice little messy vampire flick. Probably the biggest problem with this movie (or short, or whatever) is that it looks more like a pilot episode for some anime.

The good thing is that the characters (ESPECIALLY FEMALE) aren't brainless fetish objects that are just there to show you their schoolgirl panties. The usual shit that this type of anime tends to have (you are a special magical girl that has special magical powers and so on) is thrown right out of the window. What you get are gritty characters that are fed up with their lives and where it got them. So basically it's much darker in tone. They do sometimes try overly hard to look edgy but they pull it off for the most part.

In any case the plot revolves around a girl called Saya that's a vampire hunter and she infiltrates some school that's suspicious. That's pretty much it. There's not much plot but and that's okay for the main duration until the end when it gets kinda loose.

Concerning art this actually reminded me the most of Animatrix shorts. In fact there's plenty of western influence here (hence the purist hate) but I think it fits nicely with the tone and theme of the movie.

Parts: 01, 02 and 03.

In case you're interested there are spinoffs (sequels?) to this. There are a few novels/manga (one of them was written by Mamoru Oshii but I can't find it anywhere) and a few shows. I watched Blood+ and it was terrible. Characters are molded into the usual stereotypes (guess what, the protagonist got an amnesia and is now back in high school) and overall I didn't really like it. Another show is Blood C or something like that which I didn't watch.

Jûsan-nin no shikaku aka Thirteen Assassins

Director: Eiichi Kudo
Country: Japan
Date: 1963
Runtime: 2 hours
Format: .avi and with .srt English subtitles

Eiichi Kudo isn't exactly a known director, his Wiki page has maybe two sentences and this movie has like three reviews on Imdb. Those two sentences wouldn't even be there if Takashi Miike didn't remake one of his films (this one as it turns out) but that doesn't necessary mean he made bad movies. He's just not that known outside of Japan.

Thirteen Assassins is the first installment of the so called Samurai Revolution trilogy. It's one of those trilogies that aren't really connected by plot but by ideas or concept. The concept here is fighting for justice and telling feudal lords to go fuck themselves. I watched all three of movies and I have to say this is my favorite one. If anyone would like to (really, really) see the other ones I could upload them since they appear so scarce on the web.

The plot itself is pretty basic in structure. There's this colossal douchebag that did some really bad things and a group of people (samurais in this case) decide to do something about it. The plot is actually done really well when you look at its details. There's always something going on and it doesn't really get boring; maybe the plot goes a bit slow (the movie is 2 hours after all) but Japanese movies are kinda like that. Probably the only gripe I had with the characters and with this movie as a whole is that it has too much characters sometimes. You can get lost with all the names, motives and positions if you don't follow real close to what's currently going on and what's being discussed. Despite that it all resolves itself at the end and it's not really that hard to connect the dots. There are a lot of subtle hints and critiques of (then) Japanese society thrown out throughout conversations that are in the movie which I thought was a nice touch.

As far as cinematography goes the movie looks really nice. It was made during the golden era of samurai movies and it really shows in its design, locations and costumes. What I like about this the most is probably that it's far more realistic in its style. There are no one man armies here. Everyone is very human here which is a nice change from the: Mifune's beard kills everything in one hit.

If you're into these kind of movies I highly recommend you watch this, you won't regret it. If you don't like slow, black and white Japanese movies: feel free to pass this up.

9 Souls

Director: Toshiaki Toyoda
Year: 2003
Runtime: 1h 59min
Format: .avi
Lagnguage/Subtitles: Japanese with soft English subtitles

It has been a while since I posted a full feature movie. Actually it has been relatively long since I posted anything but that's not the point. Two sentences in and I'm already derailing, how nice. And now I'm talking to myself by typing. What the hell brain.

9 Souls is a story about nine prisoners that somehow managed to run away from prison. At first it might be a little overwhelming to follow nine characters but as the story progresses you really get to know them and dislike/like them so it's only momentarily that you'll be lost in this endless barrage of characters. They are all convicts for different reasons but they all manage to stick together by this loose idea that there might be some money hidden somewhere and so they hijack a convenient truck and go on a adventure.

The magic of this movie is that it starts as your usual (but a bit unusual) prison break movie which is followed by a pursuit and so on, you know the cliche. Actually this setting is only the building block for the rest of the movie that has much more to offer. The center of this movie are the prisoners and their lives and what they want to do with it. At moments it's a cheery road trip sodomy and a little later it's a sad story about a doomed restaurant worker. Many stories intervened and held by the common goal of getting away from your troubles. They all try to miserably fit back into society but they ultimately can't because the society itself has written them off long ago. They're trash now, most of them anyway.

Overall this is one of the best movies that I watched this year so far therefore I can't really give it any real subjective analysis but I can direct you to a much better review that might shed some more light on this film if my description is (as usually) vague. Just follow it here.

Ubiytsy

Director(s): Andrei Tarkovsky, Marika Beiku and Alexander Gordon
Made in: 1956
Language/subtitles: Russian/English hardcoded
Runtime: 17min and 28sec
Format: .avi

Please take note that the sound on the rip I have of this movie is a little bit messed up in a way that it tends to cut off the last words in a sentence. This could be because of the noise filters or something (or my drivers are messed up?). Since the movie itself is only 17 minutes long it does not get annoying (for me at least).

This was the first semi-official film in which Tarkovsky participated in. It was a student film that he and two of his friends directed back in film school. For the time when this was released it was pretty weird since the cold war was full on so students making something American wasn't exactly common. The only reason they managed to pull this off is because some of Hemingway's works were published in the Soviet Union for the first time.

The movie itself is a remake of sort of the story/movie The Killers albeit only first two scenes which are the bar and the apartment. The movie itself is more of an artifact for fans than a good movie. The acting is okay I guess, Tarkovsky plays a costumer here where he whistles a song (lullaby of birdland, a tune that was then known as a song of freedom, subtle anti-communist remarks by Andrei?) and orders some sandwiches. The hired killers weren't very convincing nor menacing (that's what you get for being a film student) but overall it's an enjoyable ride if you're interested in it.

I'd say if you're in filmschool or a fan of Tarkovsky you should give this a watch. Otherwise I'm not sure you'd enjoy it in the fullest but on the other hand you can then brag that you watched soviet student films to your friends and score some mad pussy. Or something.

Choosing To Die

The name Terry Pratchett usually rolls along when one would discuss fantasy novels. If you're not familiar with either him or the Discworld series I suggest you read about it on Wikipedia or perhaps even read a book or two from the series (I warmly recommend them). But this little documentary isn't directly about Terry nor it is about his work which is why I won't bother explaining it.

This documentary covers a bit more important (and perhaps a more interesting) thematic which Terry calls "assisted dying". Assisted dying (or suicide, as the law calls it) is illegal in Europe but not in Switzerland thus the existence of a particular company there that helps people to die in peace. Terry goes around exploring this troublesome and perhaps controversial topic by meeting and talking with people who are considering this option. The sad fact about Terry Pratchett is that he has a very rare type of Alzheimer's disease which is killing off his writing ability day by day. He feels that when his disease advances far enough that it completely destroys his ability to write he should have the right to end his life in a painless process rather than suffering a miserable life. Thus this isn't just a documentary about the topic but also a journey of sort for Terry Pratchett. He explains this a lot better than I did in the first few minutes of the film.

Whatever your opinion might be on this topic and whether you like Terry or not I think it would be healthy to watch this short documentary (it's 60 minutes long) and learn something (new) about life and death.

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade

Length: 01:41:59
Format/Subtitles: .MP4 / English .srt subtitles
Audio: Japanese
Director: Hiroyuki Okiura
Writer: Mamoru Oshii
Year of release: 1999
Wikipedia

Despite the mp4 format the video quality is great, the size is after all 1.6 gb so don't worry about quality.

In order to recuperate from my Valkyria adventure I decided to revisit another anime movie that I dearly liked. The movie itself is essentially a military thriller and a nice insight into the mind of a soldier (unlike some animes that I might mention, oh - ho - ho, pretension etc.) but there's very little actual combat (something of a Mamorus trademark).

The story is set in a dystopian alternate timeline where Japan didn't do very well after singing the defeat with the Americans. So in the turmoil and chaos of rebuilding the nation a wide migration to the cities occurred and so a lot slums appeared. Naturally a lot people started breaking the law along with forming various anti-government guerrilla factions etc. Shit hit the fan. Cops on the other hand didn't know what it's like so they did the only natural thing to do which was - more cops. But these were a special breed of police force on par with the military called Panzer Cops (according to wikipedia, but translations vary).

So these guys basically didn't fuck around, carried heavy weapons and arrested everyone with machine gun bullets. In the middle of all this comes our protagonist who's in one of those brigades doing his job like everybody else. As with all jobs unexpected yet expected things (I don't want to spoil it too much so I won't say what) happen and yeah, he needs to deal with it.

Since the story is written by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost In The Shell etc.) you can expect it to be much more than just what I wrote. As usual with his way of storytelling there are a lot of things happening at the same time and not much is being said - they are being showed through subtle actions and reactions of characters. But there is much more plot exposition here through words compared to the rest of his work so it's not that hard to follow what's going on unlike some other of his works. This is probably because of the director who carried the whole movie out.

The movie deals with a lot of problems of morality and the line where we just stop and rethink why are we serving whatever system we are serving and why the hell are we doing this. There's a very noticeable feel of depression and nihilism between the two main protagonists throughout the whole movie. On the surface they just don't really give a shit anymore about who's right or wrong. It wears people down and they portray it really well. It's an internal struggle whether you'll plunge completely into the beast or resurface as a human and live a more normal life.

The movie has a lot of great ideas and messages and it portrays them very well thanks to the combined job of the director and the writer. Both aren't new in this so they know what they are doing and they do it marvelously in all aspects. This is also very apparent in the art style which is somewhere between Akira and later Mamoru Oshiis work. Since the plot is set in post-war Japan there really is not much space to be imaginative but they manage to make all the backgrounds compelling and believable as locations. Lots of short alleys, mass built buildings and blue collar outfits that everyone seems to wear. It all looks very believable and it's enjoyable to look but also depressing as well.

I would love to go into much more detail with this movie but I don't want to spoil the plot for those who didn't watch it so all I can do is share the links and hopefully you'll find this movie as great as I did.

Neo Tokyo (迷宮物語/Meikyû Monogatari)

Length: 00:50:02
Format/Subtitles: .avi / soft English .srt subtitles
Directors:
Rintaro
Yoshiaki Kawajiri
Katsuhiro Ôtomo
Year of release: 1989
Wikipedia

Neo Tokyo is a triple feature from three distinct directors. For anyone that's into anime this will probably be an enjoyable 50 minute ride. For those who are into a little more experimental or different anime they will certainly enjoy it. And who would not enjoy anything that Katsuhiro Otomo ever did? Yes, I'm a fan. :P

You can read the story synopsis on Wikipedia so I won't really bother with the details of the plot and I'll just describe my enjoyments/nonenjoyments of this triple feature. The running  theme of all three movies is that our protagonist (different in each story) by accident or on purpose discovers something fantastic and supernatural and he decides to explore this. The first part is perhaps the most surreal one and it ties (more like stitches) the plot of the whole thing into one place giving it some kind of opening and closure.

A girl plays hide and seek with cat only to discover this strange world which is basically your old school metaphor of: jobs consume people and turn them into puppets in Japan. Very punk and I especially liked the train station scene where a bunch of skeletons are desperately trying to hold onto their hooks while the train mercilessly drags them forward. The art of it is also very distinct here compared to the other two. It has a very European look (to me) and the characters seem very childish in comparison to the background environments.

The second feature is about a journalist who is doing a story about an undefeated racer who races in this death sport that is some mixture of nascar and formula 1. This segment is probably the most dark of the three and the most atmospheric in general. Most of the plot is narrated through telling and not through showing so it took me two views to understand most of it so don't get annoyed if you don't get it. Just watch it once more and you'll probably get most of it. The whole setting of it reeks of film noir cinema interplay between light and dark. The general art of this short is so reminiscent of Katsuhiro's style that I thought he directed this but it turns out Katsuhiro only did the third (and the longest I think) part.

The last kept reminding me that I need to play System Shock 2 or Bioshock. The story is placed in a industrial city deep in the amazon forest. The inhabitants are only robots who are supposed to mine some material there. Of course something went wrong and they sent someone to shut the city down. As expected the whole thing is drawn and visualized beautifully reminding me much of Akira's landscapes and towering buildings. Lot's of pipes, cables and robots swarming around which is just what I enjoy and Katshiro apparently as well. The main problem that I had with this story is perhaps its childish approach (or maybe I just expected another Akira out of this one). A minor nuisance anyway.

Just like Robot Carnival this is something really nice and overlooked (I never see any discussions about this anime) by everyone. It does not deliver a complex and deep story but it has its unique and interesting appeal which is not to be missed if you like anime. I don't really know what to say; just get this already. :P

Georges Schwizgebel - L'homme sans ombre (The Man with No Shadow)

A man one day decides his life is boring and unsatisfying. He leaves his home and lurks the streets looking for someone. He eventually reaches to a prestigious garden where a man in a red suit awaits. He offers to our protagonist riches and happiness at the cost of his shadow. He accepts and gets his riches but how will others react to his lack of shadow? Discrimination, alienation? How much will he miss this one simple thing?

That's how the story starts in this short 10~ minute animated movie from a Swiss director Georges Schwizgebel and it is one of the better animated movies I saw this year (that wasn't made in this year). The plotline is seemingly stereotypical with all too known story where a man sells his soul (or shadow in this case) to the devil but it is not that quite generic. In fact it's rather interesting because it has another view on the whole situation. First of all this is just a shadow, it's not something you will not be able to enter heaven nor you will be forsaken in hell. It shows how much people discriminate and judge different people who lack something that "everyone has". But it also show how we take little things for granted every day until we lose them irreversibly. Unlike a lot of stories of this type where characters in the end repent for what they did, burn in hell or trick the devil this takes on a more interesting and more survivalist way to develop and end.

The overall look of the movie is completely amazing and exceptionally impressionistic. It looks like it was mostly done with oil and coal(?). Something like a moving painting on canvas. Since shadows are the main drive force for the story there's a lot of play on shapes and lights/shadows. Constantly the camera spins and changes angles so that it emphasizes on shapes and moving shades. One scene starts with a box with camera revolving around it and then it constructs itself into a bigger box, then into a building, then it multiplies and forms a city and so on. Fascinating and fairly original approach but sometimes way to energetic and disorienting. Perhaps that was intended?

In any case; not to be missed.

René Laloux - Les temps morts (Dead Times)

René Laloux was a very influential French animator in his time and still is. A long time ago on this blog I posted his Fantastic Planet which was his first film that I had the chance to see and incidentally it's his most famous one (perhaps even his best).

Dead Times on the other hand was his first attempt at cinema (according to imdb) way back in 1964. It's a short 9 minute film about humans and their fascination with death and everything related to it. Sort of an satire to our way of living and how much we associate everything with death. The scenes are surreal but are very clear with what they represent in reality. The whole movie is told from someone that is not from our planet. In a way an anthropological study of us and our lives (or our killing of everything more accurately).

While this constitutes as an animated film there are also a lot of live footage and still images (something like in La Jetée). There are few glimpses of how will Rene evolve his way of animation but here this is still very crude and primitive. It does not take away from the atmosphere in any way despite that. Certainly an interesting voyage if you like other Rene's works or surreal films.

Yuriy Norshteyn - Hedgehog in the mist

This whole day was filled with fog. The only thing I could see out from my window were three light poles and a beaming church tower that struck the clock every now and then. This made me think of this nostalgic animated film from Russia that was made back in the 70s.

Being a short movie the plot doesn't develop to some great depths. A hedgehog and a bear each night meet and they drink tea while they count the stars. One foggy night the hedgehog gets a bit lost and meets a certain beautiful creature in the fog. He dwells deeper and deeper into the fog meeting all kinds of things unknown to him. Through his journey an owl follows him around calling him a lunatic simply because the owl does not understand the hedgehogs appreciation for beauty.

A fitting movie for this day and mood. It's very unorthodox when compared to animated films from the west at the time.

According to Wikipedia there's a statue of the hedgehog from this movie in Kiev. I would really like to see that one day.

The Dream of a Ridiculous Man (Сон смешного человека)

Year of release: 1992
Director: Aleksandr Petrov
Genre: Drama
Duration: 20 min
Language: Russian (with separated English subtitles)

Whenever I want to write this I get interrupted. >_>

The Dream of a Ridiculous Man is a short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky written in 1877. It chronicles the experiences of a man who decides that there is nothing to live for in the world, and is therefore determined to commit suicide. A chance encounter with a young girl changes his mind.

What we have here is an animated version of Fyodor's story. I didn't read the book so I can't really tell you how much it is different from the movie but I can tell you that the setting and the overall feel of the whole movie is very much macabre (I guess that would be the appropriate word?). Be it good or bad it's up to you to decide.

What really stands out here is the art and the technique of the animation. In the most simplest way of explaining I guess you could say that this whole movie is an moving oil painting. That's at least how I look at it anyway. :P At some parts the animation can get a little weak with only just three or four frames showing movement but for the most part it's fluidity is not that much compromised. Honestly speaking I never quite saw anything like this animated so if you aren't interested in the story you can at least check if out for the unique way of how this was done.

Metastaze

Year of release: 2009
Director: Branko Schmidt
Genre: Drama
Duration: 76 min
Language: Croatian (English subtitles encoded in the film)

So far most movies I posted were (surprisingly -_-) from Japan. This time I have something, different from the usual movies I post. Croatia (where I, sadly, live) isn't really known for its film movies. Now that I think about it we aren't really known for anything. Okay maybe for tourism and Nikola Tesla (but that's debatable). Anyway Metastaze (Metastasis in English) is a surprisingly good movie that got out this year.

The story follows 4 friends from Zagreb. A hooligan (Krpa), alcoholic (Kizo), junkie (Dejo), and ex junkie (Filip). 4 types of people that are a very big part of our late post-war society. The ex-junkie Filip returns from Spain after some time of healing from drugs. He comes home and finds the same old story. Overprotective mother who allows too much and over strict father who was raised by the Communist regime (while secretly being a Croatian patriot which was against the law then) both telling him to get a decent job and start living. Of course though like many people here he will never get a job. He just doesn't care nor has any ambition so he starts to seek refuge in the delusion that his friends are having. They also don't have jobs, one is beating his wife and spends the whole day causing trouble, one is trafficking/taking drugs from Bosnia and one is just, well, drunk all the time. Basically everything is sliding down, fast.

All in all the story is not so hard to follow, the plot is simple, it's the details that matter. First and above all this a social commentary about life in Zagreb and Croatia in general. It feels like the director is mocking the general opinion of the government that the country got out of the dark ages and that we are now a European country. This movie proves just the opposite. A lot of people are still tied to their nationalism, xenophobia, homophobia, discrimination and ignorant beliefs. People are falling apart with no jobs and ambition. There's a big gap between the rich and the poor. But is the movie then a picture of reality or overblown imagination? Well I think it's very accurate. I can safely say that I met people that are like characters in the movie and I saw similar situations happening.

So is it worth to watch this movie? I guess it is. I liked it, it's very real and direct. Some people might not understand it because things work differently where they live but I guess they can still watch it out of curiosity. Also a lot of swearing words were not translated and the swearing is abundant here (just like in reality). It's hard to translate them so I won't try because they would not make any sense to you (pička ti materina = your mothers cunt, direct translation :S).

Happy first year Flying Teapot!

So the day finally came when we would be celebrating Flying Teapots first birthday. In all honesty I have no idea why I started this. I guess it was on a whim. I don't even know why I'm in this uploading business in the first place since it takes me about an hour to upload 80-90mb large files.

A lot of things happened in this one year. I finished and started a lot of things in my life and this blog kinda reflected all these happenings, despite being just a download blog. My first day at college, my trips to Serbia and all the little things I whine about in my posts. Now when I look back at the old posts I can actually remember how I was and how I felt when I was posting it. So in a way each post is a small part of me, but, this was also the purpose of this blog. To give away things that I like, I sad one day, thus I opened this - thing. A Flying Teapot that rides in the air gathering people on the netsphere for a tea party somewhere in the clouds. I guess I kinda succeeded in doing so. I met a lot of great people through this blog and I also managed to receive some things that I was unable to find myself so when all is calculated I think it was a good thing to start this. Which is why you should put on a birthday hat for ronery me. ;( Anyway, my head hurts from drinking yesterday so I needed to rant a little.

In any case I'll switch from my nostalgia to something better. Presents!

I uploaded several things and I hope you will like most of them. There's a bit of everything so I think everyone should be satisfied. In all honestly I had no idea what to post. At first I wanted to post all my original Bathory cds in .flac but the idea was soon dropped because I realized that my cd rom does not work so I could not rip them apart. -_-

The second idea was to post around 10 albums that were the most influential to my musical path but I decided not to because those albums are so mainstream and accessible that people would not download them at all.

So finally I decided to post:

1. Two ebooks that I'm currently reading.
2. A manga dear to me.
3. A raw manga that looks fucking awesome.
4. A video game that I'm digging for a while now.
5. A movie that I recently watched and enjoyed a lot.

So open your presents dammit!

FIRST PRESENT

I don't like to read books. There, I said it. I am way too much psychotic to be able to concentrate myself on imagining something that the other person is trying to tell me with countless words. I think of at least three different things at the same time completely unrelated to the book when I read. That is of course when I read dramas or story books (whatever they are called). I read science books. Yes, I'm that much of an elitist. I read things of science. Astronomy and philosophy. Therefore I present you the two books that I'm currently enjoying quite a bit.

The first is called The General Principles of Reality. The book tries to unravel the mystery known as reality and they do it in a most interesting way with not that much mathematics so if you don't understand more complex math you should not have a problem with reading it. In short here's what you'll find here:

- defining realities and relative realities
- defining a new concept of dimension
- introduce and define the Reality Scale Constant S
- defining the true effect of gravity and charge
- redefining Newton’s Gravitational formula and introducing the Q transform
- defining Space-Time Density and its New Universal Law
- show a new perspective on most known physics
- defining charge and neutrality
- detailing the relation between Quantum and Celestial realms
- defining Space-Time Buoyancy (anti-gravity)
- detailing Space-Time Buoyancy (anti-gravity) applications
- defining the formulation of Space-Time Distortion
- detailing the link between Electricity and Distortion
- defining Electro-Distortion equations
- redefining Light and Electromagnetic Waves
- detail that the Speed of Light (c) is not constant or a limit
- detailing Faster Than Light speed applications including Quantum Radio
- redefining Einstein’s Relativity equations
- redefining Einstein’s Energy equation
- attempt to explain zero and its relation to dimension and realities
- detailing the true effect behind elementary and molecular bonds
- touch on entropy, aging and its link to Earth
- touch on evolution
- explain Existence
- proving God exists

Although I don't agree with everything that the author wrote he does make some dashing good points.

Read it.

The second book is called Understanding the Universe From Quarks to the Cosmos. The name speaks for itself. The book is some serious heavy shit so if you don't like this kind of books, don't read it. It's about 600 pages long so I could honestly recommend this only to people that are into astronomy and science (and also to those who want their heads to explode).

Read it.

SECOND PRESNT

Aruku Hito - Walking Man

In this manga; nothing happens. That's right, nothing. And it's about, well, uhh, this:

Nowadays, who takes his time to climb a tree in the middle of the city? To look at the birds, to play in the puddles after the rain? The walking man, through his lonely and silent strolls, makes us rediscover the happiness of wandering around. I do this quite often myself, walking around aimlessly so I quite like this manga. It reminds me of post rock albums at some places.

There's a picture of a penis in this manga so download it.

THIRD PRESENT

BITCH

Junji Ito - Shin Yami no Koe - Kaidan

I can't read Japanese and I don't think I ever will which is a shame but oh well. In case you don't know, a raw manga means that it's not translated. Despite this flaw this looks totally amazing even without the words. It's one of the best Itos works and amazingly well drawn I might add. So if you are not familiar with the Japanese language I suggest you download this anyway for sheer brilliance of art. The stories look totally fucked up. Hopefully some good soul will translate this one day.

FOURTH PRESENT

Crayon Physics

This game is the best thing that happened in my life, ever. Perhaps one of the most innovative and orginal games of all time. Watch the trailer, it will explain everything and then download this and play it untill your life is consumed in whole and become one with the megastructure. The music is also completely amazing.

FIFTH AND LAST PRESENT

Adrift In Tokyo

Year of release: 2007
Director: Satoshi Miki
Genre: Drama
Duration: 101 min
Language: Japanese (English subtitles)

A movie from this century? In color? :D

Yes and it's amazing. There's not much info about this film around imdb and there's no snowblood apple review so my hands are a bit tied.

Anyway the plot goes something like this:

Takemura has no friends and no family. He's a student but he doesn't have any particular ambitions. In other words, he isn't going anywhere fast. Were all this not enough, the sorry sad sack has a debt of 800,000 yen. Fukuhara, a surly debt collector with a glorious mullet, is on his case. After roughing Takemura up, he gives him an ultimatum-72 hours to pay up, or else. Takemura barely has his wits about him again when he runs across Fukuhara a second time, and this time the thug has a different proposal-a walk. That's right, in exchange for a million yen, Takemura must accompany Fukuhara on a walk across the city of Tokyo. Starting in a distant corner of the city, they begin their trek towards downtown, striking up a conversation.

So basically much like all the presents today this movie is relaxing and calm. Two people walk through the city and they talk. They exchange life stories and visit places that mean something to them.

Highy recommended!

And this concludes this lengthy post. I hope you enjoyed at least one present.

Lastly, I would like to thanks everyone who visits this little place of blue background and I hope you'll visit it in the future until I get hit by a car and die a pointless death while my organs are being sold on black market and thus I won't be able to post again.

Franz Kafka's Ein Landarzt (A Country Doctor)

Year of release: 2007
Director: Koji Yamamura
Genre: Drama/Psychological
Duration: 21 min
Language: Japanese (English subtitles)

When someone mentions animation or anime that is related to Japan it usually means big eyed moe girls with high pitched voices that are 18 but look like 9. This is sadly true, most anime are like that because the audience demands this and the production houses deliver that in order to make money. But not all is everything like that. Since their animation culture flourishes a lot there are still plenty of astonishing visual experiences.

This particular anime is - unique. Forget everything you ever saw from Japan because this one is completely different and completely surreal. Perfectly fit for a Kafkas story. The motion of characters, the background drawings, the eerie sounds of nature they all blend into this marvelous work so much that I could not believe what I'm watching. So memorable yet so morbid and scary.

I'll stop my drooling here. In any case this is an adaptation of a short prose by Kafka called Ein Landarzt which translates to "A Country Doctor". The story is about an a hapless country doctor that was called by the night bell emergency to visit a young patient. Events soon take on a surreal aspect as "unearthly horses" transport him instantaneously to the bedside. The doctor, preoccupied with personal distractions and grievances against those he is employed to care for, fails to find what is revealed to be a vile, fatal wound. He is humiliated by the villagers, who are "always expecting the impossible from the doctor," and doomed to an endless return trip, losing everything.

Highly recommended!

Snowblood Apple Review

Alright so the poll ended and I gave it some thought (bastards, I originally wanted to post Hamlet ;_;). The conclusion was to post this movie for obvious reasons. This is from Japan, fucked up (maybe not as much as certain other Fukui films but still!) and it's cyberpunk. So I think this covers everything the voters (mostly) wanted.

Despite being low budget the movie is very enjoyable. It's not exactly terribly serious but it's not a comedy either. There are some humorous scenes (dark humor I might add) but they fit in this crazy atmosphere very nice.

The plot revolves around a cyborg that is designed to be a love bot (HOHO, YES LESBIAN SCENES ARE IN THIS MOVIE KYAAAA) but the owners throw it out because the cyborg can't have an erection (or something like that). The cyborg then wanders around Tokyo and he finds an homeless girl who adopts him and takes him to her lair.

I'll stop here because there's an great review (as always) on Snowblood Apple so I won't add anything else. All in all I like this one. It's not totally mind blowing or original but I had fun watching it.

Bullet Ballet

Year of release: 1998
Director: Shinya Tsukamoto
Genre: Crime/Drama/Thriller
Duration: 87 min
Language: Japanese (English subtitles)

Imdb

In this incredibly stylish, dark and subtly violent movie, Tsukamoto takes a black look at three entirely disparate generations and finds each lacking. It's like a human food chain: the young characters in Bullet Ballet are mainly gang members or prostitutes, unmotivated drug-addled slackers looking to make easy money through crime and violence, and who have no morals, are utterly bored with life and have no future to look forward to except to grow up, if they're lucky, into salarymen; the middle-aged group are slaves to business, empty suits who are rich pickings for the youths to prey on, and who don't understand anything about society except keeping the boss happy; and the older generation, in which the youths class the hero of the piece, Goda (continually calling him 'ojisan', or 'old man', even though Tsukamoto was only 38 when he made this movie), who are so out of it they are completely irrelevant and utterly laughable.

Bullet Ballet has a stylised, unreal, grainy, heavily-contrasted look redolent of the true classics of 40's film noir, replete with femmes fatales, chisel-jawed heroes and evil villains, with stunning composition, kinetic action interspersed with amazing, pure silence and slowness, and incredible attention to detail in its use of close-ups. Just like his previous movie Tetsuo: The Iron Man, you could take every single frame of this film as a beautiful image on its own. And yet the style is occasionally so starkly frenetic, so fresh and exciting it's literally breathtaking.

There are contrasting scenes of such hyperactivity that it's hard to make out what's happening, as well as long, exquisite sequences of slow, loving detail - for instance, when the protagonist Goda finally gets his hands on a gun and simply sits and stares at it, turning the bullets over in his fingertips, then recreates his lover's suicide by gunshot in the exact spot she died in, reliving the death of the only thing which has ever mattered to him, it's not only pure and beautiful art, it's intensely moving and deeply desolate. And some of the slow-motion shots of fighting are literally as elegantly balletic as the title of the movie suggests. - Snowblood Apple
