"A New Old West" from award winning author Jacqui Nelson

Each month, I feature a Best of the West guest author on Get Lost in a Story. One of my first guests was a fantastic debut author, Golden Heart winner Jacqui Nelson. Last month, you heard about her award-winning novel, Between Heaven and Hell. She'll have another Western historical romance out in September, Between Love and Lies. And today I'm giving readers a sneak peek!

Between Love & Lies, coming Sept 2014
In a town ruled by sin, will he earn her love or her lies?

Sadie Sullivan lost everything when a herd of longhorn cattle bound for Dodge City trampled and destroyed her farm. Now she works in Dodge—one of the most wicked and lawless towns in the West—at the Northern Star saloon. But her survival in this new world of sin and violence depends on maintaining a secret so deadly it could end her life before the town of Dodge can.

The one man capable of unraveling all of Sadie's secrets is Noah Ballantyne, the Texan cattle rancher whose herd destroyed her home. Back in town and taking up the role of Deputy Marshall, Noah vows he won't leave until he's put things right. But with the Northern Star's owner unwilling to let her go and a rival rancher plotting to claim her for his own, things won't be easy...especially with Sadie resisting him every step of the way.

Between Love & Lies – a never before seen excerpt

Dodge City, Kansas – 1877

Noah drew a bag from each of his vest pockets and scattered their contents, a stream of colorful poker chips, across the card table. “How many acres was your farm?” He pulled his chair closer, his knee brushing hers.
The contact sent a jolt, unexpected and breath-taking as a bolt of lightning, up Sadie’s spine. She pinned her gaze on the window and huffed out a breath, trying to conceal her reaction. “If you’d truly purchased my home, you wouldn’t have to ask its size.”
He unfolded a crisp white piece of paper and laid it atop the poker chips. The deed to her farm bore his name.
Her blood roared in her ears. “Well, since you do indeed own my farm, you do not need me to tell you the extent of your property.”
“Indulge me,” he insisted, pulling his chair even closer until she sat between his splayed knees, within the unyielding curve of his body.
She blinked, befuddled by his persistence and this conversation’s purpose. Around her, the corners where the sun couldn’t reach were no less dark, but with Noah sitting so close the shadows seemed lighter.
She released a pent-up breath. “My farm totaled one hundred acres.”
Noah assembled the poker chips in neat stacks before her. When he was done, she counted ten columns of ten chips.
His gaze snared hers and held her captive. “I’ll give you one acre for every request you grant me.”
She felt her jaw sag in disbelief, but the rest of her snapped to attention. The desire to regain her farm was deep-rooted. And completely illogical. She couldn’t live on the land without a new house—a house she didn’t have the funds to build or protect from the never-ending herds flowing north from Texas. The dream of recovering all she’d lost faded, leaving her with only Noah’s proposal. He’d mentioned requests and she worked in a saloon…with a brothel upstairs.
Heat singed her cheeks, but she lifted her chin. “What kind of requests are you proposing?”

Meet Jacqui

Jacqui Nelson writes historical romantic adventures set in the American West and Victorian London. Jacqui's love for the Old West came from watching classic Western movies while growing up on a cattle farm. Her passion for Victorian London wasn't far behind and only increased when she worked in England and explored the nooks and crannies of London on her weekends. She now lives on the west coast of Canada where she works in a bookstore. She is a Romance Writers of America® Golden Heart® winner and three-time finalist.

Between Heaven & Hell
On a trail full of danger, will he guide her to heaven or hell?

Hannah knows one thing the moment she enters Fort Leavenworth—she's arrived in Hell. But inside is the means to a new life, a position as a scout on a wagon train bound for the Western Territories. All she has to do is convince the wagon master, Paden Callahan, she's the right person for the job.

After his wife was murdered by the Comanche, Paden let his work as a Texas Ranger consume him. Now he wants nothing more than to disappear into the West. Unfortunately, the one man he can't refuse has asked him to guide a wagon train full of tenderfoots across thousands of miles of Indian land. But Paden's greatest challenge turns out to be Hannah, a woman his heart won't allow him to ignore even though she was raised by an enemy he hates.

Now, let's get to the questions...

E.E.: How did you come up with the idea for your book?
Jacqui: After writing my first novel, Between Heaven &  Hell (an Oregon Trail story that won a Golden Heart® for historical romance in 2010 and that I just published this summer), I started searching for a storyline for a second book. As is often the case for me, I turned to history for inspiration. While reading my Time-Life Old West books, I learned how the Texas cattle drives devastated the small farms along the trail when the longhorns infected the local cattle with a deadly tick.

What if a hard-working woman’s only source of income was destroyed by a cattle drover’s herd in just such a way? What if the drover returned a year later on a second cattle drive and found the woman’s life had changed 180 degrees: from innocent farm girl to cynical siren singing in a notorious Dodge City saloon? The idea was the spark for Noah and Sadie’s story.

E.E.: What is your hero’s “kryptonite”? What brings him to his knees?
Jacqui: Noah’s kryptonite is the guilt he carries and can’t ignore. It’s what drags him back to Dodge a year after his first disastrous trip. It’s what then keeps him in Dodge until different emotion invades his heart.

E.E.: What one thing about your hero frustrates your heroine?
Jacqui: Noah wants to help Sadie, but she’s learned the hard way not to trust anyone. How can she depend on anyone when everyone in her past has abandoned her, including Noah when he first met her a year ago?

E.E.: What one thing about your heroine frustrates your hero?
Jacqui: Sadie won’t accept Noah’s offer of assistance and if he can’t help her, he can’t make amends for starting her descent into a life of sin.

E.E.: What could we find in your heroine's purse?
Jacqui: Sadie doesn’t carry a purse, but she does make good use of another accessory. If she needs to open a locked door that stands in her way, she uses her hairpins. Her employer, Madam Garrett (the owner of the Northern Star Saloon) is hiding an evil secret. Exposing this secret is Sadie’s ticket out of Dodge and her dangerous life as a saloon girl.

E.E.: Which of your characters would you most like to invite to dinner?
Jacqui: I’d choose frontier lawman Marshal Bat Masterson. I had a great time researching his life and threading him into my novel. Masterson and Wyatt Earp were in Dodge City in 1877 (the year of my story) and I loved the true-life detail that Masterson had a wicked sense of humor. I couldn’t resist having him pester Noah into becoming his deputy so Masterson could more easily meddle with Noah and Sadie’s lives.

E.E.: What’s your favorite kind of story to get lost in?
Jacqui: The stories that sing to me are the ones brimming with emotion and grit. When I read, I want to laugh, to cry, to shout in protest (when something goes wrong) or in joy (when something goes right).

E.E.: If you were given a chance to travel to the past where would you go?
Jacqui: I’d travel to the American Old West of course! I love the frontier spirit and the open country. But I’d like to put some restrictions on my time travel…no visiting during the winter or pouring rain J

E.E.: What drew you to write in the genre(s) you do?
Jacqui: I grew up on a farm and I loved watching Western TV shows and movies. I find the memories from my youth are often the most vivid and therefore the most inspiring.

E.E.: How is it working with hot guys and sexy women all day?
Jacqui: Although my characters are often larger-than-life in their looks and their deeds, the journey I ask them to take is never glamorous. I drag my characters through the mud, both physically and emotionally. I make them earn their happily-ever-after. Is it possible to be sexy under those conditions? I’ll have to let my readers be the judge of that!

E.E.: What has been your most rewarding publishing moment?
Jacqui: I love hearing from readers. One comment that particularly delights me is hearing how those who don’t normally read Westerns say they enjoyed one of my books and are now looking forward to reading more Westerns. It’s a thrill to learn that I might be helping to resurrect a love for the Western genre!

So that leads to a question: when was the last time you read a Western novel or watched a Western TV show or movie? And what did you think?

Enter and leave a comment for your chance to win one of my books, including my new release, Between Love & Lies, which comes out in September.

More Steam! From E.E. Burke

Get Lost in a Race for Riches

Amazon | B&N | Apple iBookstore | Kobo
Just as the Civil War was cooling off, a different kind of conflict heated up—the battles between powerful railroads.

Steam! Romance and Rails is a Western historical series set during the era when America expanded its boundaries as fast as men could lay track—a time when passions and ambition were destined to collide.

Amazon
Yesterday, I introduced Her Bodyguard, the second book in the series. Today, we’ll focus on the first book, Passion’s Prize. These two novels take the perspectives of opposing railroads locked in a fiercely contested construction race.

Her Bodyguard follows the troubled Border Tier Railroad and the settlers’ riots sparked by greed and ambition. One woman, whose life is endangered when she stakes everything on the railroad, finds out the most dangerous man may be the one she hires for protection.

Passion’s Prize focuses on the story of the Katy Railroad and three very different women caught up in the cutthroat competition: a spy, a former Madam and a railroad heiress.

Within Passion's Prize are three novellas penned by me, Jennifer Jakes and Jacqui Nelson (all Golden Heart finalists in 2010).

We conceived our novellas within the context of the same historical event with an overarching plot line running throughout. Our characters play important roles in each others' stories. While we released our novellas separately, in my opinion the reading experience is better if you take it as a whole.

Between now until Sunday, I’ll be blogging about a variety of topics related to these books and the series, and giving away lots of freebies. Make sure you sign up below for the drawing.

The Katy Railroad Then: a raucous railway

Passion's Prize hones in on the Katy’s early days, after the railroad was first organized and was rushing to lay track through Kansas on its way to Texas.  Here's picture of the line that we wrote about. The race took place a point south of Salina, Kansas to the border of Oklahoma (then Indian Territory).

Soon as the Katy went into operation, the line earned a wild reputation.

As track was laid, towns would spring up. Brothels and keno joints would appear before the first legitimate settlers staked out their land.

In Muskogee, one man was shot and buried before the first train passed through, and three others were killed as the first cars screeched to a halt.

A rough element followed the Katy, men who became known as “terminuses” because they hung out at the existing end of the line, plundering, robbing, shooting things up and causing general mayhem.

Bandits so frequently held up the trains the Katy had to arm railroad workers.

One of the men charged with keeping order in Denison, Texas, was Jesse Lee “Red” Hall (Guess the color of his hair!)

Hall was known for always getting his man--or men as it were. One time, he reputedly walked into a saloon unarmed and arrested seven outlaws. Another story tells of how he cross the county in a buggy, found the wanted man he was looking for, and then handcuffed them together and rode back to Texas, where the man was tried and hung.

Periodically, throughout the building phase and later, during the early “wild days,” the government sent in troops to keep order and drive out the riffraff.

In time, things settled down and the Katy became a very successful railroad.

The Katy Railroad Now: a biking trail

After the Katy stopped operating in the late 1980s, portions of its rail bed were purchased and turned into a hiking and biking trail.

My favorite stretch of The Katy Trail is near the little town of Rocheport, MO. This part of the Katy Trail runs right alongside the Missouri River and is very scenic.

The historic town of Rocheport, once a steamboat stop, is just off I-70 near Columbia, Missouri.

There are several lovely Bed & Breakfast Inns, including my favorite, The Schoolhouse. (Yes, it’s an old schoolhouse).

Speaking of Bed & Breakfast Inns, my newly released novel, Her Bodyguard, features the Lyons Twin Mansions in historic Fort Scott, Kansas.

This lovely Victorian mansion--actually twin mansions--now functions as a Bed & Breakfast Inn. I used one of the buildings (the largest one you can see) as a model for my heroine's home. And I got the idea of writing a story based on Fort Scott after staying here several times.

The innkeepers are wonderful, the town has many historic sites (including an authentic frontier fort that is a National Historic Site and a National Cemetery). Fort Scott is also located along the old Katy line and was an important stop for the railway for many years.

To celebrate the release of Her Bodyguard, I’m holding a drawing for a two-day stay at this Victorian mansion. You can enter that drawing at my website

Today, you can sign up for your chance to win one of the books in the Steam! series. Use the raffle tool below. You'll notice you can improve your chances by tweeting, liking my page or following me.

Award-Winning Western Romance Author Jennifer Jakes

GET LOST IN THIS STORY…
A man with a bitter past…
After the Civil War, Major Sinclair Bradford fled West to escape the pain of battle and the shame of a failed marriage. Haunted by betrayal and lies, he trusts no one—especially women. The last thing he needs is the lure of a dark haired brothel madam. Not only is she beautiful enough to tempt the devil, she’s deceitful enough to shred what’s left of Sinclair’s heart. But when she asks for his help to investigate the attack of a young girl, he can’t say no to her—nor the aching desire she stirs in him.

A woman with no future…
Eden Gabrielli lives by three rules: Never trust the wealthy, do whatever it takes to survive, and never again believe a decent man could love a whore. After being stabbed and left for dead, she must lie to keep her secrets and protect her sister from a life of prostitution—even if that means deceiving the handsome and determined Major Bradford, the one man who tempts her to break her rules. She might need his help, but she craves his touch, which makes him a dangerous ally. Because if the truth is revealed, more than her rules could be broken…

I’m thrilled to host Jennifer Jakes at Get Lost In A Story today! Not only is she an uber-talented author, she’s one of my writing partners for the Western romance anthology Passion’s Prize, which contains her steamy new novella, Eden’s Sin. Jennifer was a Golden Heart finalist in 2010, the same year I made the finals, both of us with Western romances. She’s an amazing writer, but you’ll find that out as soon as you pick up one of her books.

After trying several careers—everything from a beautician to a dump truck driver—Jennifer finally returned to her first love, writing. Maybe it was all those Clint Eastwood movies she watched growing up, but in her opinion there is no better read than a steamy western historical.

Married to her very own hero, she lives on seven acres along with two beautiful daughters, two spoiled cats, three hyper dogs and one fat rabbit.
During the summer she does Civil War re-enacting and has found it a great research tool, not to mention she has continued appreciation for her microwave and hot water heater.

Her debut novel, RAFE’S REDEMPTION, was a RWA Golden Heart® finalist and Won BEST ROMANCE 2011 at DITHR and many other awards. RAFE’S REDEMPTION has since become a #1 Best Seller on Amazon!

Her second book, TWICE IN A LIFETIME, was an International Digital Award finalist. It has also recently become a #1 Best Seller on Amazon!

An excerpt from Eden’s Sin…

“We can see if Mary Rose feels up to talking now.” Eden stacked the dirty plates into the sink. “The dishes can wait.” Better to let the major ask his questions and be gone. This evening was too …cozy.
“All right.” He pulled the frying pan free from the heat. “After you.”  He smiled again, and it was discerning as hell. His dimple, the fact his eyes crinkled at the sides…and the way his hair was still mussed did crazy things to her insides. He was nothing like the men she’d been with. High-bred dandies, they were. Alexander being the cream of the crop, or the bottom of the barrel depending on how you looked at it. Nevertheless, all of them were worthless, selfish men who betrayed their wives, their business partners, and anyone dumb enough to associate with them.
She much preferred Sinclair’s class of people. Much preferred a lazy smile from a man willing to help in the kitchen over a rehearsed laugh from a man sprawled over a fainting couch. Much preferred the heady scent of saddle leather over bottled toilet water. Much preferred the man following her over any man she’d met in a long, long, long time.
She felt his gaze scorching her back as she led him through the kitchen to the spare room where Mary Rose rested. What was he thinking as he trailed behind? Was he wondering about her limp? Why she'd become a whore?
Something foreign inside made her want to tell him, wanted him to understand this life had chosen her, not the other way around. That given a choice, she would have been anything but a whore. Could have been a wife, a mother. Could have been someone respectable, wonderful, loved.
Before they reached the door she stopped short and turned – colliding against the major. His arms shot out catching her, wrapping her in his heat for just a moment, but searing her with the memory she wouldn’t soon forget. She glanced up to apologize, but the words froze in her throat. His brown eyes darkened to black, and a thick, languid heat flooded her limbs, making her boneless.
She melted against his hard body. Oh, God, she wanted him, wanted to stay right here in his heat for just a minute or a month. She wanted to feel safe, warm. Wanted, wanted so much.
She lifted her head. His lips were full and so close. His breath brushed across her cheek, warm, sweet from his sugared coffee. His palm slid up her ribs, his fingers achingly close to her breast, closer, closer, so close the breath froze in her lungs. The look he gave her was unguarded, exposed, raw, a look that stirred a spark inside her, sparked embers she'd buried long ago. A spark she thought to keep extinguished forever, but now it scorched her inside out.
And God help her, she liked it.

E.E.: How often to you get lost in a story?
Jennifer: Not nearly as often as I wish I could! But I do manage to read a few chapters each night before bed—even if that means staying up a little too late…LOL

E.E : What’s the first romance book you remember reading?
Jennifer: Oh, good question! And I actually do remember! I was 11 yrs old and it was summer break. I must have been driving my mom crazy because she handed me a Harlequin and said, “Go read!” The title was Blue Jasmine. And the rest, as they say, is history. I was hooked on romance!

E.E.: What’s your favorite cartoon character?
Jennifer: Is it wrong to have a crush on Flynn Ryder from Tangled….? No, I didn’t think so. He’s the BEST Disney hero ever—not to mention the only one who could grow facial hair and act manly…just sayin’.

E.E.: What sound or noise do you love?
Jennifer: I love rain on a tin roof. Makes me wish my house had a tin roof. Since it doesn’t, I do like the ticking of a clock or the lapping of waves.

E.E.: Be honest, when reading...do you put yourself in the heroine’s role?
Jennifer: Oh, yeah. And in the hero’s. That’s why I’m such a tough critique partner. :)

E.E.: What’s your favorite kind of story to get lost in?
Jennifer: Historical Romance all the way. Preferably, Western Historical. I want action and danger, and I like the grittiness of the Old West.

E.E.: What do you do to unwind and relax?
Jennifer: I’m not familiar with these 2 words. What are they? LOL  Honestly, I am a workaholic. Wish I wasn’t but it’s my nature.

E.E.: What would you say is your most interesting quirk?
Jennifer: I have a very odd sense of humor. ;) Odd and ornery and a little dirty.

E.E.: Tea or Coffee? And how do you take it?
Jennifer: Iced Tea/ “Girly” (as my dh calls it) Coffee. A little coffee with my cup of cream and sugar.

E.E.’S GOTTA ASK – JENNIFER’S GOTTA ANSWER  J

E.E.: Who's your celebrity crush and why?
Jennifer: Ohhh, Alex O’Loughlin, 100 %.  He is gorgeous and has an Australian accent (tho’ we don’t get to hear it on Hawaii 5-0). What more can you ask for in a hero? He’s fodder for many a daydream, er, I mean plot. Plot, yes, that’s what I meant.

CURRENT RELEASES: Eden’s Sin, an individual novella and featured as one of three interlinked stories in the anthology Passion’s Prize. This book, written with Golden Heart sisters E.E. Burke and Jacqui Nelson, is the first in a new series, Steam! Romance and Rails.

UP NEXT: Ah, decisions, decisions. I have so many plot ideas right now, I’m having a hard time deciding on which one. I have part of ALASKAN HEAT written but a group of sexy Civil War heroes are bugging me to write their series….so we’ll see.

GOT A QUESTION YOU’D LIKE TO ASK YOUR FANS?

Jennifer: If you’re a fan of the Western genre, have you been watching the new(ish) T.V. series on AMC-TV, Hell on Wheels? If so, who is your favorite character on the show?
