Taking Time

Hello my bloggy friends! Yes, I've been MIA! While I've been chasing a toddler around the house, I've realized how much I miss and need to be creative (at least some time!). So I'm back to share the latest piece I've been working on. I've incorporated some techniques I learned from a workshop from Tonja Sell along with some fabulous StencilGirl stencils. I'm learning to use pastel pencils as well - and all I can say, is this is really fun.
I began the background not knowing what focal image I might find hidden in the patterns, and was excited to spot the hint of a face and hair.

I'm really looking forward to exploring these ideas further!

Let Your Soul and Spirit Fly

I had so much fun creating this mixed media triptych and couldn't wait to share it with you.  The form was from Retro Cafe Art and it was exactly what I had been looking for.  After I misted the background,I added some gilding flakes and then started stamping the flat background images.  Then I used modeling paste and stencils to add French Script words.  I stamped the large Peony image onto vintage French dictionary pages using Versamark Ink and embossing powder.  After that was heat set, I fussy cut the image and adhered it to the panel.  I overstamped images and heat embossed them as well to add more dimension.  I love how these colors pop together!

Makin' a Splash with a Mixed Media Mermaid Video Tutorial

Summer is here! So to celebrate the magic of the season, I thought I would create a Mermaid Canvas.

The Dimensional Crystal created so much texture and sparkle for the seashells - and it is so easy to use.

We will make a simple stencil and mask to create this bubble background - which can also be used for any type of bokeh effect as well.

So, if you are ready to play along, here is the video. Let's jump in!

Wow Embossing Powder - Earthtone Olive; Bodacious Blue; Primary Sherbert
Faber-Castell - Gelatos, Pitt Pen Big Brush

Bee Strong Video Tutorial

I love bee imagery - so I really had fun creating this canvas for today's video.  And this project is jammed full of great techniques that you will want to try yourself.

So please join me, in my studio (via the wonderful world of YouTube!)

Supplies
Prima: Stencils
Unity Stamps: Cooped Up Notes
Anna Griffin: Chipboard Letters
Tsukineko: StazOn Ink ( Jet Black)
StencilGirl - Wood Icing
Paper Napkin
Golden: Matte Medium

I played along with the Scrap Around the World challenge using their June Mood Board.
I pulled in some of the colors, but was also inspired by the diagonal stripes on the straws - and as you will see in my video - my canvas began with a diagonal striped background.  I also had to throw flowers in there (because, I do love my flowers).

Spring into a Mixed Media Layout

This is one of my favorite pictures of my nephew when he was young. Unfortunately, my sweet Will has a neurological disorder, and these days he is not usually able to smile and giggle like he did here - so it really makes me thankful to have these memories and to have captured them with photos.  So remember to take photos of your everyday lives and celebrate each and every little moment.

This layout was really fun to create and I used lots of different "tools" to add color and texture to the base page using the wonderful Art Anthology products.

The first thing to do when you are creating a mixed media style layout, is to determine the area where your photo will be and lightly draw a box around the area with a pencil. You don't want to have your very favorite designs covered over completely! So planning helps immensely.

Next, I will generally add some stenciling with the Art Anthology Colorations.  I want this first layer of design to be flat, so I can keep building it up.  I used the diamond stencil  with Grass and Plush.  Remember to let each step dry before moving on to the next.

I used a doily stencil, and the Coral Sorbet Dimensional paint for the next layer and positioned this behind the upper right corner of my photo. This paint is great for holding it's shape and it's kind of shimmery and semi-transparent - so it is great to reflect the light. I also added some stamped images around the edges of the photo.  And around the actual photograph, I dry brushed Art Anthology Gesso on, to help distress that as well.

It's pretty obvious how to make splatters with the Colorations - just unscrew the sprayer from the bottle and flick the tube towards the paper.  I used that technique, (with Salted Caramel) and in some places, I used a drinking straw and blew air on the wet ink to move it around.

I also wanted some larger open circles, so a added paint around the edge of my paint lid (using the Sorbet - Coral) and used this like a stamp.  Just make sure to wipe off the excess when you are finished so you don't have a hard time opening your paint.

I also dipped the drinking straw into paint and "stamped" with that ( Sorbet - Mint Julep).

I put a layer of stenciled molding paste over some of the designs - and after that was dry, I added more drips.

I also like adding hand stitching to my layouts.  I use a heavy twine, so I always pierce the holes first and then it's much easier to get clean results.

I used the same twine to create a "frame" around my photo.  Bits of burlap were stuck under the photo as a mat, and I rubbed a bit of gesso on those areas.

Mixed Media layouts aren't hard! They really are fun.  Don't be afraid to experiment with your paints and mediums and enjoy the journey!

Mixed Media Layout with Art Anthology

Today's layout is going to show you how to add stamped/painted canvas elements to your project.  It's a fun technique that adds a different dimension to your piece.

First, I decided where my photo would go on the layout, and drew it off in pencil.  Then I added Art Anthology Gesso around the borders and misted it with Cinnamon Toast Colorations. With my finger, I added Velvet Dimensional paint in Reef, Fiji and Portobello.  Then I stamped various background stamps (using StazOn ink).

To make the canvas flowers, I painted Desire (Velvet) over the canvas, leaving some areas uncoverd.  Next I sprayed Paprika over the rest of the canvas to fill in.  At this point, I stamped one flower on the canvas and cut it out.  The paint will help to keep the canvas from fraying.

For my other flowers, I painted Gesso over the painted canvas, and while the gesso was wet, I stamped the Worn Stars stamp into it (without any ink on it). This was allowed to dry completely, then the flowers were stamped and cut.

You can see the faint stars on the pink flowers.

I also used the gesso to stamp the drink ring stamp on the layout.

For the final detail, I made a heart from twine and used it to frame my photo.

Mixed Media Canvas Video Tutorial

Are you ready to have some fun, building gorgeous layers of paint and stamps?  Then come on!  I've got a video tutorial to share with you today that will show you just how I created this canvas.

After I made this, my 8 year old nephew told his mother that he loved her because she was "Sparkle" - Somehow that just reminds me of this canvas.  I want to be Sparkle and Shine on!

Background Stamping

I've got a card to share with you today- and it all started with a cool background stamp. And... the challenge at JustRite Stamps is to use a great technique with background stamps - so here it is!  I decided to make some paper blooms to correspond with some of the stamped  images.  I also added some fun mixed media techniques - so I've got a tutorial to share with you, how I created this piece.

Start with WorldWin Papers new Parchment paper.  This already created some texture and depth.
Use a mask and spray Art Anthology's Fern Leaf Colorations.

Position the mask to spray the un-inked areas with the Guacamole Colorations.

Outline around some of the diamonds using a gold Sharpie marker.

Stamp the French Rose background stamp with watermark ink and heat emboss with a brown powder.  Use a paintbrush and the Colorations sprays to paint the areas of the design within the embossed lines.
Die cut a frame from WorldWin's Kromekote copper and emboss.
Rub some Art Anthology Velvet paint in Lagoon over the copper frame to give it an oxidized appearance.

Die cut flowers and shape them on a foam mat.

Add a little Art Anthology Sorbet (Dazzle) on the flower petals to give a little glittery effect.

Spray a little bit of the Vineyard Colorations on your work mat, and dip the tips of the petals in this.

Stamp the Elegant Fronds stamp on the DoubleMates (Berry Red) cardstock. Cut rolled flowers from the stamped paper.

Put the card together as shown.

Happy Times With You

Hi! I've got a mixed media layout to share with you today - and it really goes to show how easy it is to introduce mixed media techniques into your everyday projects. I've used Art Anthology Colorations mists and the Sorbet  and Velvet dimensional paints.

Here, you get a glimpse of techniques -mists were used to distress the edges of the papers, a wooden butterfly  has been embossed and misted, resist papers  have been colored with spray, and stenciled texture paste has been sponged with the Colorations.

Here is a close-up of the wooden butterfly.  It was misted first, then embossed, and then misted again.  It really creates a ton of texture.

This piece of paper was stamped, then a stencil was laid over the top, and texture paste was applied.  After it was completely dry, the Colorations were sponged on.  You will also notice that the photo has been rubbed down along the edges with the Velvet paint.(I just finger painted this on).

Finally, I added highlights to this silk flower by brushing on the Sorbet paint.  It really added some highlights to the flower, as well as drawing in the main colors of the layout.

I hope you give some of these quick and easy techniques a go.  I will be back on the Art Anthology Blog on January 25 with a really fun video to create a faux mosaic background.
