the faint hum of the night wrapped itself around the room as emmael perched silently in the corner, his presence masked by the shadows that clung to the edges of the space. he hadn’t meant to follow them home, not at first. but when he saw the way they had lingered at the door, their expression cracking under the weight of disappointment, he couldn’t stop himself.
it was curiosity, he told himself. concern, perhaps. nothing more.
yet as the hours passed and the faint scent of wine lingered in the air, emmael remained. he watched from the edges as they moved through their routine, seeking solace in soft lights and a warmth that didn’t quite reach their eyes. his gaze lingered when they poured another glass, the flush on their cheeks deepening with each sip. and then, when their hands drifted over their skin, unguarded and vulnerable in the quiet of their solitude, he froze.
they didn’t know he was there, couldn’t possibly know, yet the intimacy of the moment burned through him like fire. he should have left—should have turned away the moment they began to unwind completely. but instead, he stayed. watched. felt a strange pull as if tethered to their every movement, to the soft gasps that slipped from their lips.
it wasn’t until they had finally stilled, their breathing evening out in the grip of sleep, that emmael moved. quiet as a whisper, he stepped closer, his boots brushing against the floor. he stood over them, gazing down at the peaceful expression that had settled across their face.
❛ you deserve more, ❜ he murmured, his voice barely audible even to himself. his hand lingered near their cheek before trailing down, slipping beneath the fabric of their shirt to reveal the softness of their skin. his gaze swept over them, drinking in every detail as his touch wandered lower, tracing the curve of their abdomen. slowly, deliberately, his fingers ventured further, finding the warmest part of them. the faint scent of their desire lingered in the air, undeniable and intoxicating. he knew they were still wet—he could sense it, feel it, smell it.
she’d begun to think that something was wrong with her. despite her best attempt to explain away each separate occasion with reason the events had simply piled up to the point where she couldn’t help but turn inward. she was young, sure, and naive - she’d been called that more than once and was willing to admit to the truth of it. her soft, rosy lips twist and her eyes roll back as she falls into her bed alone and with audible exasperation. every date she thought went well never called her again, and that was if they even showed up in the first place because in the last few months she’d been stood up more times than she could count.
these circumstances had supported her new habit, her right hand clumsily moving between her legs as she worked herself up to a thin sheen of sweat just to whimper out a weak orgasm before falling asleep. her dreams were no respite, much to her dismay, dark and filled with a powerful kind of lust that left her seeking meaning from it, answers for the way she would wake up feeling. her head lolls to the side against her pillow as she shudders out a breath and sinks into the depths of slumber.
she always left the window open, felt soothed by the sounds of the night outside as she drifted off to sleep. it never really occurred to her that the night could seep in. she mumbles softly, an incoherent babble of conversation occurring in her dream, her body shifting in response to a touch. it was unknown to her and yet familiar, feather light in nature and filled with a kind of yearning she couldn’t yet fathom herself. hannah turns her face into the pressure, humming softly and then sighing out in deep satisfaction as the touch traveled down her body though for the moment none of it was enough to rouse her from her sleep.
micah’s jaw tensed as zara spoke, his gaze fixed on her even before she turned to him. her pout, the soft vulnerability in her voice—it stirred something in him that shouldn’t have. he let out a low breath, his hands gripping the counter behind him as if grounding himself.
❛she’s way too good for him,❜ he agreed, his tone firm yet quiet, carrying an undertone of protectiveness. his eyes softened as they met hers, a flicker of something unspoken passing between them. ❛no guy like that deserves either of you.❜
her proximity was distracting, and when her eyes searched his, seeking his approval, his chest tightened. he tilted his head slightly, a crooked smile tugging at the corner of his lips as he reached out, letting his fingers graze her arm—just lightly enough to test the boundary they both knew existed.
❛don’t doubt yourself, zara, ❜ he murmured, his voice dipping lower, ❛you don’t need me to tell you what’s right—you already know.❜
but the way he held her gaze betrayed him, revealing that his reassurance wasn’t just about her words, but about her—her presence, her everything.
since they were young he had been the strong one, resolute and confident in the way he cared for them. she’d always admired that about him. the agreement he voices brings her relief and newfound determination, nodding her head along and finding herself instinctively drifting closer to him at the softness in his gaze and the way it wrapped around her with the same comfort that his arms always would.
hazel eyes widen slightly at the next words to leave his lips, a moment of tender surprise before she feels her stomach flipping at the what she could read through the comment. no guy deserved either of them … except him. she hovers in the space next to him and drowns in the tension, feels it build and build until it’s rising up over her head. the way he smiled, looked down at her, the way his digits extended to lightly graze her arm. zara can’t help the little noise of frustration that leaves her, her skin buzzing where he’d touched it, a small nod of her head following his encouragement.
“ i’m gonna .. ” her words fade away as she grabs his hand and pulls him towards the door and into the hallway down towards maddie’s room. she lifts her free hand and knocks lightly before turning the knob and opening the door a crack - “ mads, can we come in ? ”
her assurance was the anchor he needed to slow his heartbeat && racing thoughts enough to regain clarity. this wasn’t him - at least, not the boyfriend in her life. raleigh knew what she needed, what she wanted, and it wasn’t a man of instability. the consuming urge to be with her, to have her, it had shaken him enough that raleigh had lost control, even for a moment. he felt bad for yelling at her, worrying her, pulling away… he couldn’t imagine a world without her, a life where kayla wasn’t his.
“ i’m sorry. ” he exhaled, meeting her eyes, trying to slide back into the perfect man once more. raleigh felt himself with her - he’d just never figured out how to bring all the parts of his personality together into one. the darkness, the sexual obscurity, and the man who truly loved her. leaning forward on the bed, he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her in to a hug even if his heart still raced in his chest. they weren’t going to fight. raleigh didn’t let them fight. he couldn’t stand it. “ i’m sorry i yelled, i’m sorry i got on your phone - ” he whispered the apologies into her hair against his nose, petting it down softly. “ i- i’ve got trust issues. it’s the worst part about me. ” maybe that was a lie. he was worse things. he’d done worse things.“ thank you for believing me. ” the idea you could hate me- or leave me, i just… can you forgive me? “
her hands tighten, knuckles whitening as her manicured digits curl into the sheet she clutches. her breath stutters at the apology, the heat of her irritation waning slightly as his eyes search and land on her own. it twists her chest, the way their eyes meet and she experiences an overwhelming surge of feelings throughout her body - a conflict she didn’t know what to do with. the invasion of privacy hurt, the lack of trust in what she had grown to think was easily the most fulfilling relationship she’d ever had. he was so many things to her; kind, thoughtful, incredible in bed. he remembered everything she told him, made her feel like the most important person in the world.
she softened against him as his taut arms wrapped around her, pulling her body into the warmth of his and erasing the space he’d created between them in the bed only moments ago. her heart thuds at the sharp contrast in his attitude now as sweet apology slips from his lips and the warmth of his breath tickles the curve of her ear through her dark hair. ” ral, of course i forgive you but … did i .. “ she starts, swallowing thickly as he reaches up to gently stroke his fingers through her hair. ” did i do something wrong ? “ the question is tentative, relationships were foreign, the level of emotion was something she’d never dealt with in herself before being with him. ” to make you look ? “
“ she’s really upset, ” zara pouts softly, lacing her arms together over her chest as her shoulders droop in a sigh before she peels her gaze away from the window. while she wasn’t necessarily the most emotional girl herself, these were the two people she cared about most in the entire world - it broke her heart to see her sister’s heart broken. “ we should … ” her breath hitches slightly, words caught in her throat like an insect in a spider’s web. they crept too, like insects, crawling up her throat and out of her mouth as she shivers and looks over at micah. “ i mean, he doesn’t deserve her. she’s too good for him. ” quiet footfalls bring her over to where he stood, pushing her tongue into the hollow of her cheek as her eyes flicker up to meet his. “ right ? ” she sought his permission, his approval.
