Sofia the First Halloween Costume and Party Ideas

So my daughter is CRAZY excited for Halloween this year.  She’s 3 – which means that every time the Disney Junior channel mentions Halloween, she asks what day it is, if it’s Halloween, whether she can wear a costume, and when we’re having a party.  We’ve been doing this dance about 6 times a day since the first of October, haha.  She wants to be Sofia the First, so I picked up a Sofia costume at Walmart for her to get ready!  Now, as it turns out… bringing home a costume with 3 weeks left to go before she can really BE Princess Sofia does not help 3-year-old patience.  At all.

Yes, someone is CRAZY excited to be Sofia the First.  “Is it time?  Is it Halloween?  Can I wear my Sofia costume today?”  So I got thinking about it, and there’s really no reason she can’t enjoy it for more than one day.  So I put together a mini-surprise party for her while she was at preschool one afternoon last week, and she was SO thrilled to have her very own party!

First, I headed out to Walmart on a #CollectiveBias shopping mission.  I had picked up her costume already.  Walmart has exclusive Disney Junior costumes for whatever your little girl would like to be – Doc McStuffins, Minnie Mouse, or Sofia the First!

Your Walmart may have a special display for the #JuniorCelebrates costumes, so check the aisles for it!  Mine did not, but I found the adorable costumes right in with all the others.  What I did find, though, were party supplies for this covert party mission.  American Greetings has a whole line of matching Disney Junior party supplies – so I picked up a couple of decorations and goodies to make the day special.

I put together a few party favors, too (because what’s a party without activities and cute little touches, right?)  I asked Raya what she thught it was like to be a princess, and she told me that “a princess is sweet and kind.”  Well said, kiddo.  So I incorporated that description into the favors – I punched up some quick pillow poxes, and printed up some tags for them.  Inside was a sweet treat, and a kind activity (like “be nice to your brother”, “pick up your toys”, and “mind your manners”).

And finally, the activity for the party: edible amulets!  You can get as detailed as you want designing your own amulets, but I opted to keep things simple and use what I had on-hand.  I used my heart-shaped silicone cupcake molds, but any shape (especially if you can find something gem-shaped) is great for this project – just as long as it’s flexible.

To make the amulets, use candy melts (in purple, for our party) and put them into a squeeze bottle.  You don’t need a special squeeze bottle for this; a clean and empty squeeze bottle works fine – and bonus if you can just throw it away when you’re done!  Just follow the instructions on the package of melts.

To reserve holes to string the amulets, I cut small squares of parchment paper (wax paper would work fine, too) and rolled them up.  You can tape them or put a small rubber band around them to retain the round shape.   Just place the paper where you want the hole, and squirt the melted candy around it.  You can embellish with sprinkles (like these pearl-looking accents) and then set them aside to harden!

Finally, set them out with ribbon strands so that your guest of honor can create her own amulet!

And, of course, enjoy said amulet. :)

My daughter had so much fun coming home to a party; it helped her feel really important, and it was a great way to get some extra use out of her Halloween costume.  We even left the decorations up for a few extra days, so she could have meals “at her party”.
