HOMEMADE LOFI PSYCH --- WHERE TO START?

"There is so much great music here..." WHERE TO START???

I recommend to
start with the HLFP-Samplers (especially HLFP 04).
Here you will come to know many of the bands/musicians featured in this blog. If you like what you hear, you may check out more of their music later on.
(You may also click on the picture on the sidebar and you will find the original post with download links.)

There is also a "FOCUS ON..." section. Here you will find albums that imo are absolutely great (***** = "five-stars-recordings") and that are essential listening and strongly recommended for download.

I TRY to RE-UP some stuff that has been down from time to

time, but I still don't have enough time to

listen to/post much new stuff.

Sorry!

REPOST by Request: POET ZERO (Orange, Ephemerol...) - Vanille Club, Radio X (GER. 2002)

POET ZERO (aka MAXIM ENGL) of EPHEMEROL fame doing a solo acoustic radio concert, broadcast 09-17-2002 on "VANILLE CLUB", RADIO X, Frankfurt a. M., Germany, performing songs from his solo repertoire as well as his former bands/projects THE JANITORS OF LUNACYORANGESPACE TRUCKINand PAN AMP.
This is an edited version of the broadcast, because some cover versions of songs by TIM BUCKLEY, NICK DRAKE and BLACK SABBATH, that POET ZERO
also performed on that day, had to be left out for copyright reasons...

The highlights probably "Stanley Kubrick's Diaries" (compare to the electric version by the JANITORS OF LUNACY here) and "Magic Spell" (also performed many times live by ORANGE). At the end of "Magic Spell" you can hear a quote from "Neil's Elevator", which fits in here perfectly...
Enjoy!

RE-POST: Paneye - Wilt and Loom (AUSTRALIA 2009)

"Wilt and Loom" is a fantastic record!!!

The man behind the one-man project
PANEYE is Will Treffry, and he is from Summer Hill near Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
PANEYE's music could be described as a mixture of electronic, ambient, psych folk and indie dream pop.

Regular blog readers will certainly already be familiar with Will Treffry's music recorded under the name PANEYE as well as BRIRSTLES ON THE CARAPACE. In fact he is one of my favourite musicians featured here on HLFP.

Dive into his dreamscapes and enjoy!

Re-Post: Manual Zombie - S. T. (HLFP Compilation) (USA 2009)

MANUAL ZOMBIE is a New York/Brooklyn-based psychedelic band (like SKY PICNIC), a duo of two guys: Ahmad and Ben. Compared to SKY PICNIC their music is more sinister and far less influenced by 60ies/70ies psychedelic rock. MANUAL ZOMBIE's sound is at least to some degree rooted in the 90ies grunge, post punk and metal sound (though on tracks like "automatic people" some Sweet-Sister-Ray-VU-Punk is greeting). I'd also say I hear some BLACK FLAG influences, and I especially love that excellent distorted guitar playing. Their other main weapon is the voice - often spooky and menacing with strange spoken word passages:This is a trip to the dark realms of psychedelia. Enjoy!

MANUAL ZOMBIE's website lists four releases, and the 9 tracks from this collection here are taken from those records (that you can buy there) except for one song that was only recorded recently.
Favourite tracks: "Automatic People" and "No More Sun"

"Never draw conclusions about a garden from the way a person looks – and especially don't do so about the inside of the arbour from the way the garden looks."
This kid on the cover artwork at any rate looks like straight out of a Stephen King novel...

This is the 2nd demo-recording of the german psychedelic band ORANGE, based in Frankfurt a. M., from 1995. For more info check out the older entry here at HLFP.

The original ORANGE existed from 1993 until 1995. In those years the band released two demo tapes and was very active, playing many festivals in Germany (Rhein-Main area and south Germany) as well as a lot of solo performances, especially in Frankfurt and Wiesbaden.

This 2nd demo called "IN THE GARDEN OF THE DEMON KING" (as a kind of homage to KING CRIMSON) was recorded in true home recording spirit on a Fostex 4-track tape machine in their reheasal place in Frankfurt (an old WW II bunker). The band played and recorded the backing tracks in first takes on two days and then overdubbed vocals, guitar parts and assorted other instruments, noises and tape effects. This probably explains the somehow tinny overall sound, but nevertheless this recording definitly has its moments, especially on the 30 min psychedelic-experimental masterpiece "NEIL'S ELEVATOR". This track builds up quite slowly, starting with wind sounds and a long, slow guitar solo (kind of UFO-Flying-style), before rushing into the post punk indie instrumental main theme, with lots of different parts following, culminating probably in a bizarre, surrealistic druggy story told (in german) by singer Sue Boildice (about some pigs that don't like her green, new shoes because they remind them of the green grass... and more strange things happening) – very far out. Especially because Sue's voice of the backing track shimmers through and so creates a spooky, heavily disturbing overall atmosphere. After that you can listen to some kind of hobbits' freak-out party... (They even make an attempt of singing "Rosies" from the 1st demo...). The second (slow) theme follows, with Sue quoting some familiar lyrics above a PINK-FLOYD-Echoes-like backing... And this is just halfway thru the song! A heavy psychedelic roller-coaster/elevator ride indeed! Not to be missed!

In comparison with "Neil's Elevator" (by the way: also a live killer track!) the remaining songs (usually with Sue's PATTI SMITH like vocals to the front), though not bad, surely look a little pale. "Brown" and "Love in the Suffer Room" offer some kind of post grunge/indie sound, while the title track "In the Garden Of The Demon King" (formly known as "Orange" – remember "Red" by KING CRIMSON?) shows the band again in a more progressive mood.
I added "Soul Drive", usually part of "N.E.", as a single track, 'cause it is quite a good song in its own right.

Again: Only around 8o tapes were originally sold at concerts or given away to friends. So this is a true rarity.
Should be listened to on headphones!

Enjoy!

Kid's Garden - Don't Call Me Yours - Digital 7" (USA 2011)

George De Large from Harrisonburg, VA, is the man behind KID'S GARDEN.
Some time ago I posted his first album Further on HLFP (see here).

KID'S GARDEN - Don't Call Me Yours
- Digital 7" (USA 2011)
(mp3-zip, 3 tracks, 9 min, 22,7 MB)
Get it here or here or here!
released 26 April 2011
Kid's Garden is:
George Clanton- Vox/Rhythm
John Sgroi- Lead
Nick Webb- Bass
Chris Straub- Drum

"Kid's Garden debuted with the album "Further" in 2007 on the website "George De Large's Music To Take Drugs To" blog (now defunct).

It was given away for free and generated a relatively large number of listeners on Last FM (http://www.last.fm/music/Kid's%2520Garden)

Since then there was only one other song ("Lord, Amen" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Xw1mzcTT10) released with very little distribution.

Last month we announced we played the first show ever as a band after 4 years, and announced a preorder for an upcoming 12" vinyl EP to be released this summer.

The preorder was successful, generating nearly $500 (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1471123704/kids-garden-mirror-kisses-split-album-on-vinyl), which is half of the total cost of printing.

The record (entitled 'Light Hearted') is being pressed as we speak, and will be coming out soon. To ease some of the anticipation for this long-time-coming release,

we are giving away a free 3-track single on bandcamp, called Don't Call Me Yours. thats what I sent you. (kidsgarden.bandcamp.com)

Kid's Garden is a 4 piece band from Harrisonburg, Virginia (USA) just beginning to perform live. We will be performing around the east coast of the US all summer long.

thats pretty much the whole story in a nut shell! All of the music was written and recorded by me in my basement apartment."

Wonder Wheel - IMHO/Deep in the Bottle (digital 7") (USA 2011)

"This is Paul A. Rosales and here is a quick sample of the Wonder Wheel band's first full-length album, Total Bundy.

The only recordings with the band have been a few live bootlegs and the Wonder Wheel and the Warriors Demonstration EP of July 2010. Raul, Danny and I have been working hard over the past few months to compile and refine these tracks.

A cassette release with Burger Records will be available Spring 2011 and we are looking through other outlets for CD + LP. (...)

Broderick Young - Dysfunctionally Yours (USA 2010)

In February 2009 I posted BRODERICK YOUNG's first solo album Florescent Light Fortina on HLFP (see here), NOUGATS followed March last year (see there) – and here is his latest release, Dysfunctionally Yours, recorded Winter 2010. Another very fine album – again, what strikes me most is Broderick's voice, reminding me of a young, charming LOU REED (especially in his VELVET UNDERGROUND time and early solo stuff). Enjoy!

"This one was sort of weird to do. Usually I like to write a song then record it and keep on doing that until I have enough for an album, but this time I wrote the songs, did a demo, revised the hell out of them, practiced, then recorded. Chris Daily and I recorded the rhythm guitar and drums on a tape 4 track then transferred those tracks to a digital 8 track. The tracks recorded there were saved on a computer for further mixing with pro tools and logic. It's pretty crazy but everything sounds clearer than it did on some of my other albums. Well I hope you enjoy it!" (B. Y.)

Favourite track: Insomnia (love that cheesy organ!)

This Love Is Deadly - Misery (EP) (GER. 2010)

THIS LOVE IS DEADLY is a much promising band from Berlin, Germany, that is heavily influenced by shoegazing gods MY BLOODY VALENTINE (aswell as, say DINOSAUR JR.) and also reminds me – especially regarding Lisa's vocals – of PATTI SMITH and PJ HARVEY.
Misery is their first EP. And it is excellent!
Grab this monster!
Q: Do you want your real names mentioned? If so: What are your real names?
Louis: Sure! Our names are Lisa & Louis. Our drummer wants to be called H.D.
Q: Who involved? Who played what?
Louis: Lisa on bass and vocals, me on guitar and vocals and H.D. on drums.
Q: Where exactly are you from?
Lisa: I was born in Seoul, Korea and grew up all over the world.
Louis: I originate from Italy. H.D. grew up on a farm near the border to Holland.
Q: Since when are you into recording music?
Lisa : I guess, like probably every ambitous young musician, who starts to write own songs, we all had our first dilettante tries at recording music in our teen years on old-school cassette players. I remember, at one point having this really shitty and defect head phone set that my father'd given to me because he had no use for it, and it came together with this computer program to record voice samples and stuff like that. I recall how excited I was about its overdub option, which allowed you to record over your first take. That's how I did my vocal harmonies, after having recorded the guitar together with the lead vocals. The program even had a special effects section, enabling you to reverse a take...it felt like heaven to me back then! However, about five years ago Louis and I started to build up a home studio where the first tlid recordings were recorded. Everything was still very amateurish and low-fi, it still is actually! We sort of made a virtue out of necessity and have adopted this style to our overall band sound. But it was a great way to gain experience and since then especially Louis has become quite skilled at the art of recording, mixing and producing.
Q: Any previous bands/side projects that you've been involved in worth mentioning?
Louis: I played with a band called the amber light before, H.D. played with EL*KE and Lisa's currently got a solo project under the name Amour Fou.
Q: How'd you "label" your music?
Louis: I dunno, maybe Alternative, Psychedelic, Pop, Punk, Grunge...
Lisa: I always find it difficult to categorize ones own music... Motor.de recently wrote a review about us describing our music with german words such as "Edelgrunge" and "Rauschrock", which sort of appealed to us.
Q: What's your favourite track on this ep? Why?
Louis: We love 'em all equally. I think Midiverb stands out for it's uniqueness in terms of sound.
Q: How do you write your songs? What comes first, words or music?
Louis: Music always comes first then we write the lyrics. We write mostly on acoustic guitars.
Lisa: Yeah, when the music and the idea of a song is there, we play around with a melody...sometimes the melody inspires the lyrics...certainly the feeling of the song does. Rarely do we have a distinct idea of what exactly the lyrics should express... it's more a mood, a general feeling. The first idea of lyrics are mostly improvised and we often experiment with the phonetics of words, the sound of a word can be very inspiring. It's sort of an unconscious process, a stream-of-consciousness kind of thing. We might not understand it while in the process of creation, and often it only makes sense after completion.
Q: What’s the best song you’ve ever written?
Louis: I believe it's Wasting Time.
Q: Favourite line from a song you've written?
Lisa: Hm...I don't know. Our lyrics can be quite trivial and insignificant. If a song of ours carries a message, I believe it's more of an emotional than an intellectual nature. Perhaps that is the reason why our vocals are more often than not very low in the mix. Due to the fact that we mostly utilize the voices as instruments, it's more important to us that the melody or the way something is sung carries a certain feeling and thus contributes to the whole atmosphere of a song.
Q: How do you record your albums?
Louis: Mostly we record demos at home first on which the final recordings are based upon. Then we go into a studio and overdub the drums, preferably on tape.. We end up using a lot of tracks from the demos because of their feel. It's always a mix between lo-fi and hi-end.
Q: Any plans for live gigs?
Louis: We wanna play live as much as possible.
Q: What are your main musical influences? Do I hear a MY BLOODY VALENTINE influence or is that by chance?
Louis: Sure, MBV is a key-influence. But so is much of the music I think they were also influenced by, like sonic youth, dinosaur jr. the velvet underground, ramones, stooges, jesus and mary chain, hendrix, neil young...etc.
Q: Favourite band at the moment?
Lisa: Scott Walker is much adored at present.
Louis: I agree, I might have said Neil Young a few weeks ago. His latest record is a masterpiece.
Q: What was the first record that really blew your mind?
Louis: In Utero, Nirvana
Lisa: Nirvana, In Utero
Q: The last five records you bought/downloaded?
1. Neil Young - Le Noise
2. Tocotronic - Schall und Wahn
3. Air - Love 2
4. Portishead - Third
5. PJ Harvey - White Chalk
Q: Anything that you think is interesting, that you'd like to inform the blog readers about...
Lisa: Our MISERY EP is now available as a FREE DOWNLOAD! Via this link: http://www.thisloveisdeadly.com/ThisLoveIsDeadly-MiseryEP.zip
(or you may - of course - use the links below (m-f))
Favourite track: Wasting Time, but every track is a winner!
