So. Today, 18 years ago the Berlin Wall fell.
I remember, next day at school Trabbis were everywhere, the smell was rather terrible.
People, so many people waving out of their cars or making the sign for victory.
Later that year our class went to visit the former DDR. Awful! The roads were in a very bad condition, as were the houses and everything.
Now everything is in a very good condition. Two of my colleagues are from "over there" and sometimes when they tell me about the "old" times I'm not sure if they are kidding.
I am thankful I grew up in "West Germany", or the BRD.
I wonder how these news were taken in other countries, were they mentioned at all? Do people assume we are really reunited?

I do remember the day the wall came down. It was really huge news over here. However, sadly ... the US news media really SUCKS at keeping the country apprised of the reality of other nations. So, I honestly do not know much about it at all. I commented at work the other day, after the Red Sox won the World Series, how DISGUSTING our media is. They spent WEEKS discussing the World Series GAMES ... WEEKS ... interrupted regular programming to tell us that their plane had landed back in Boston, etc. Whooo hooo!! BIG NEWS!! Their plane landed! There is SO MUCH going on in the world, yet EVERYTHING was Red Sox or Patriots, or Britney Spears, etc. Totally disgusting.
I remember it was huge news, too. For weeks, the stories were all about how many East Germans were taking all their money out of their banks and crossing into West Germany through ?Czechoslovakia. There were stories of families being reunited after years. Wonderful pictures in magazines and videos on TV.
My father had died earlier in February 1989, and I remember the fall of the Berlin Wall as perhaps the first time I felt genuinely happy and optimistic that year.
Their plane landed! - Yep, that´s the same with stupid ole soccer over here, Wendy!
Any small dumb team is reported in the news (but when the Braunschweig Lions get the title for being german bowl defender in american football again - not a single word) - it´s a man´s world after all, I guess...
Willow, for weeks, really?! I wouldn´t have thought so!
Sorry your father passed away, this is so hard, I sadly know what I´m talking about...
I learnt about it in school but not much. I think it's assumed over here that Germany was reunited after that.
I was only six when the wall came down so I don't remember whether it was on the news a lot - probably was.
