Joyce Stranger

Psuedonym of Joyce Muriel Wilson. Lived in Anglesey, Wales. Sadly died just as this website was born,  in 2007.

Ms Stranger trained as a biologist, specialising in animal behaviour, and tried her hand at dog training too. Not surprisingly, animal themes, especially relationships between human and animal feature in all of her books. She thought that the human-animal/human-nature relationship was extremely important and that a co-existence between the two could improve quality of life. She said "for many people an animal can provide a harmony lacking in day-to-day relationships with people."

Her books are not very anthropomorphic, deliberately so. She thought that many animal books, especially those aimed at children were inaccurate or sentimental or humanised the animal. Instead she wanted her stories to "show how animals live in a world that is real to them" In fact because of this some of her books are quite uncompromising and  many are quite downbeat. Very sensitive readers may find some of the stories too upsetting. Disasters often strike her fictional worlds and her characters are often unhappy, guilt-stricken or remorseful. However thankfully they usually end on a more upbeat and optimistic note.

Ms. Stranger was one of the few authors to write horse stories mainly aimed at adults. Most of her horse and pony books are either adult or teenage stories.

She did have her own website but at the time of this last update has sadly now been removed from the internet.

Vet Series
Not a true horse series but have included as there is a lot of horse content in these books and they are all good reads. For horse-only purists, the latter two have the most horse content. The series follow the fortunes of newly qualified vet Tim Yorke. Although he loves all animals he dreams of the day he can have a horse of his own. Will appeal especially to those who love the James Herriot vet stories.

All paperback first editions. At least two of these were reprinted in hardback by Severn House, the others may have been although I have yet to come across them. In the UK the paperbacks are fairly easy to find on the internet. The hardbacks are quite rare. All are much harder to find outside of the UK.

STRANGER THAN FICTION
(MICHAEL JOSEPH 1984)
Reprinted in paperback by Corgi.
EDITIONS PICTURED: Corgi paperback
SUMMARY: Fictionalised account of the true story of Elspeth (Elfie) Bryce-Smith, based on her diaries. Elfie was crippled by polio as a child but learned to walk and ride and eventually became a jockey. Amazingly, in a time when ladies were not allowed to ride in races, she masqueraded as a man to fulfill her ambitions!
PONYMAD VIEW: Although based on a true story this is not a dull factual account but a real story. It is a fascinating and unusual novel for older teenagers and adults. It also provides an insight into the very different role woman had in the equine society back in less enlightened days. As an interesting aside, Joyce Stranger actually rode at the stables owned by Elfie in later life.
PONYMAD RATING: 4 HORSESHOES

With the help of a Shetland pony whom they rescue, and Kirstie's patient teaching, Mandy begins to regain her nerve and may even be allowed to ride the magnificent black Star…
PONYMAD VIEW: Aimed at a younger readership than most of the author's other horse stories, this is a pretty good story about losing nerve and overcoming it with a bit of a ghost story thrown in for good measure.

Collectors Info:
Most of these were reprinted as paperbacks (Midnight Magic was a paperback original) and are fairly easy to find. One or two, such as The Hounds of Hades and Hound of Darkness are harder to find. The Wild Ponies is the rarest of the lot and not often seen. Two of the books at least were published in the USA, January Queen and The Stallion, I am not sure if any of the others were. If I find out more on this point I will update this page.
