return of the links numbering five

I haven't done one of these in quite a while.  Here's five links of old stuff (in goldfish-memory internet time) about old stuff (in history of the hobby time).

five links, all wiki

It's been a long time since I did an installment of Five Links.  This time I thought I'd share some of my favorite wikis.  I can get lost in these things for pretty much any amount of time.  Feel free to share your own fave wikis in the comments.

Homestar Runner Wiki

Wookieepedia - Star Wars wiki

Muppets Wiki

The Codex of Ultimate Wisdom - wiki for the Ultima series of crpgs

Uncyclopedia - If you haven't been in a while then do yourself a favor and click through to see the banner ad.

I was thinking of listing Memory Alpha (a Star Trek wiki) instead of Uncyclopedia, but it seems to be down at the moment.  I don't have to give out links to Wikipedia itself or TV Tropes, right?  We're all hip here?

been a while since I did one of these...

Varlets & Vermin - great new free PDF full of low level monsters

The Diary of Jack the Ripper - transcription of the hoax that made the news a few years back

Denebian Slime Devil - I'm pretty sure one of the Arduin books or something like that has stats for one of these

Lords of the Middle Sea - need a map for your post-apoc campaign?

I Am Not A Gamer - Roleplaying Games, Cultural Artifacts, and Self-Identity

five links, nano-review edition

Malevolent & Benign - You'd think I'd be really into a book full of shiny new 1st edition monsters, but this thing is just too wordy. Every time I go to read the fluff on one of these monsters I keep thinking Dave Hargrave of Arduin fame could've fit four times as many awesome critters in the same space. But if you like deep background info on your monsters, this may be right up your alley.

The Grinding Gear - Another absolute gem from Jim 'worst attitude in the OSR' Raggi. Like Death Frost Doom before it, this is a great item to drop onto your sandbox hexmap. Just leave it there, lurking menacingly, for some poor bastard PCs to stumble into. Things I wish I had thought of first: dead rats on the wandering monster charts. Like most of Raggi's best work, only get this one if you like material that demands that you DM outside your comfort zone.

X-plorers - I need another sci-fi RPG like I need a third bunghole, but I'll be darned if this doesn't look like a hoot. Remember how that old TSR chestnut Star Frontiers was basically Traveller for the Basic/Expert D&D kids? X-plorers is in the same conceptual territory, but I think it does a better job of it. If you like the mechanics of Swords & Wizardry look no further for your new favorite game about laser beams.

Adventure Games Publishing - The booklets that James Mishler has released recently are all sorts of awesome. I like Curses & More Curses and 100 Encounters & Treasures: Level 1. And Guide to the World of the Wilderlands is both a great campaign overview and a great format to rip off when writing an overview for your own setting. Monster Menaces Compendium 1-5 has the same wordiness of Malevolent & Benign above, but it also contains rules for the Chupacabra and the Rocktopus. It's hard to be dissatisfied with any book that brings that kind of radical-osity to the table.

Stonehell Dungeon: Down Night-Haunted Halls - One of the best things to come out of the old school hullabaloo. If dungeons are your bag, get a copy. Highest recommendation. 'Nuff said.

The Rozz-Tox manifesto - A classic

five links of interest

Death Frost Doom module now available - James Raggi's criminal empire is now an official branch of the government of Finland and here's his latest salvo in the war against stuff that sucks.

Noble Knight Games - If you want a copy of Death Frost Doom and don't mind the wait, I strongly urge you to ask Noble Knight to get you a copy. That way they will order another batch from Raggi and the perceived value of such products will go up. Of course, it's easy for me to ask you to wait, since I ordered my copy just before Noble Knight's initial supply dried up.

Three Headed Monster - A trio of my favorite bloggers (Chgowiz, Sham, and Amityville Mike) have combined to form a Voltron of gaming goodness. Expect great things.

Brave Halfling Publishing - I was disappointed when I heard that these guys were switching over to Castles & Crusades as their only supported old schoolery. Nothing wrong with C&C; it's just not my favorite. Well, now they've decided to support Labyrinth Lord as well and I'm happy as a clam.

Eldritch RPG - This is the third system that Brave Halfling now officially supports. I don't know anything about it other than what is on that page, but if the gang at BHP like it so much I figure I ought to check it out.

a sheepish five links

Last night I sat down to do another post about saving throws. I also opened another tab at the wikipedia solar system portal. By bedtime all I had done was this. However, I did find this and this, which any sci-fi GM ought to check out. But I'm not quite sure how spending two and a half hours reading about planets ended me up here. (That last one has a few NSFW images.)

(Admit it, you clicked the NSFW one first, didn't you?)

Five Links on a lazy Sunday

MagCloud - New Print-on-Demand publisher, they only do saddle-stitched, color, in letter size but for that configuration they're cheaper than Lulu. Currently in Beta.

Tales of the Ink Knight - Where I found out about MagCloud

The Uncarrot Tarot - WTF?

Planet Koozebane - I dare you to use this in your next sci-fi game.

Hack/ random dungeon generator - Probably my favorite online random dungeon map generator. It doesn't do any of the stocking for you, though.

it's been a while since I did Five Links

Outlaw Press - Reprints and new stuff for Tunnels & Trolls. Cool!

Going Underground - A guide to dungeoneering in the world of Tékumel

A Hamsterish Hoard of Dungeons & Dragons - Already on my blog list, but I wanted to highlight it as a Grade A source for DM's in search of new monsters, treasures and drop-in mini-adventures. Don't let the silly name fool you!

Judges Guild Journal - Read the first two installments online

Random Impedimenta - A d100 chart o' stuff.

live finks

Minimus RPG - Dave, my original gaming buddy, tells me his group is going to give this a try. Looks pretty dang hippy to me, which is weird considering author Ken Burnsides also wrote Attack Vector, a game that I would only recommend to people who think SFB isn't crunchy enough.

Transcript from the World RPG Congress - HUZZAH!!!

Uncle Bear's Encounter Savage - Even if you are an unrepentant cretin who has zero interest in either Encounter Critical or Savage Worlds, do yourself a favor and at least look at the awesome pictures.

A gallery of painted Dr. Who miniatures
- It's amazing how incredibly nifty some of those crappy rubber aliens look as 28mm metal.

Scratch that project off the list! - Amityville Mike makes a PDF freebie for Labyrinth Lord/'81 Basic/Expert D&D that is astonishingly similar to something I was working on myself. Am I required to besmirch his reputation with baseless accusations now? Or do I go straight to challenging him to pistols at twenty paces? What's the protocol?

Just kidding about that 'unrepentant cretin' line.
