black particles - a path in entropy (2024)

In post-rock music, I look for one of three things: either the overpowering melancholia, or the overwhelming guitar heaviness or the energetic blizzard of melodies and fast pace. The Hungarian outfit of black particles redefined the last one with a fantastic album a path in entropy released last November. It's a blast that should never stop.

There is not a second wasted, the band instantly goes to the fast-paced, pure energy kind of music. It is very melodic, but there is no space for idle guitar intros and gentle weeping, it's the juicy tempo from the very beginning. I wanted to pause to grab a coffee, but I was taken by the album's flow and simply couldn't. Luckily, the sound itself is filled with caffeine that makes your body awaken and energized. Especially when you get to the torrent of guitars entitled the stranger in the mirror. This all makes it clear that the musicians have background in post-hardcore, screamo music as the energy is very similar but translated into well-structured, guitar-based compositions. I love it.

black particles - loss function (2022)

Two years after their very promising debut EP called Wave Function Collapse, the Hungarian post-rockers are at it again releasing a short album called loss function. If you need some exciting and adrenaline-fueling instrumental music, this is one for you.

As it was the case with the EP, the Hungarians draw inspiration from science, this time the title's loss function is a function "representing some >cost< associated with an event" (as per Wikipedia) and we are most probably supposed to take it figuratively in which case it can apply to so many areas of our lives. Musically, they take this concept into the very fast and guitar-oriented post-rock music. It's not particularly loud (in the massive kind of way) but it certainly makes the blood pumping and adrenaline kicking with the rapid guitar sounds (as in a fractured view as the best example).

The closer to the album finish, this guitar madness gets more and more impressive. There's little place to catch your breath on this album in general and so maybe it was the point to make it very fast but ultimately not too long for a post-rock release, sort of a sonic way of saying live fast and die young. Very rock'n'roll-like.

Black Particles - Wave Function Collapse (2020) EN

Another debut this week. This time it's the Hungarian post-rock collective Black Particles. Hailing from Budapest, the musicians entitled their first album Wave Function Collapse.

As the unwritten law of post-rock says, it's good to serve this music decorated with some concept from the world of science and metaphysics. Here we have the parallel worlds, because as the artists say "Although an infinite number of possible futures are available every second, the conscious or unconscious choices we make destroy all but one". And so on the album we deal with fittingly epic and massively sounding music. Like in the opening Solace I. - Disintegration that takes some time to develop but it shows a solid, guitar sound.

The album shows a very guitar-oriented post-rock that has everything it needs: atmosphere but also melodies, diverse compositions and crushing walls of sound, and it best sounds probably in Quit | Relapse. Promising debut.

Wave Function Collapse costs 5 EUR.

Black Particles - Wave Function Collapse (2020) PL

Kolejny w tym tygodniu debiut. Tym razem w wykonaniu węgierskiego post-rockowego kolektywu Black Particles. Witający się z Budapesztu muzycy zatytułowali debiutancki krążek Wave Function Collapse.

Jak chce niepisane prawo post-rocka, warto ozdabiać tę muzykę jakimś konceptem z pogranicza nauki i metafizyki. Tutaj mamy światy równoległe, bo jak chcą artyści, "chociaż nieskończona ilość potencjalnych przyszłości możliwa jest każdej sekundy, nasze świadome i nieświadome wybory niszczą wszystkie poza jedną". No i  na płycie mamy do czynienia z odpowiednio epicką i masywną w brzmieniu muzykę.
