Some things are just unrepeatable. Apart from the first broken heart, taste of ice cream on the seaside or the pain of crushed bones, there's also shoegaze from the nineties. Although new-gaze, the new attempt on the genre, undoubtedly has its perks, the ambiance of the original recordings by MBV, Slowdive or RIDE just can't be copied. And that's why the EP by Ozean is so fantastic.
The story writes itself. Or rather it is written on their Bandcamp account. Ozean was a band created in the early 90s by Eric Shea and Mike Prosenko who were joined by the lady with an unearthly airy voice - Lisa Baer. And so they recorded the three track demo and...disappeared. As did many similar groups in this time. No one would know about Ozean if it wasn't for Tim Green of Louder Studios, who remastered the only one published cassette and recommended it to our ears.
And there's much to recommend. Although it's only three songs, the oneiric shoegaze, tiny bit more catchy than MBV and a lot more dreamy than RIDE, leaves a great impression.So it's a great shame that the wave of 90s shoegaze legends come-backs won't give us Ozean back.
