Yoo Doo Right - A Murmur, Boundless to the East (2022)

The Montreal-based Yoo Doo Right were one of the biggest gigs during this year's dunk!festival. Live they present a loud and exciting volcano of emotions but on their albums their music feels more nuanced and artistically complex. A year after their fantastic debut on Don't Think You Can Escape Your Purpose, they released at least as good followup in the form of A Murmur, Boundless to the East.

And accordingly, they describe their own sound as a concoction of numerous genres that in the end results in "crafting a unique sound that could be described as a >>car crash in slow motion<<". Such a fitting summary and I can totally see it: many different elements everywhere, not-too-fast tempo and the feeling of overwhelming energy. This is their music all right. Probably the best way to simplify it is labeling the music as psychedelic post-rock. On one hand the complicated structures of the compositions as well as the very psychedelic rock-specific vocals, on the other the guitar passages that grow and grow in a tension-building way (so great in SMB) that leave no one unsatisfied. 

The two worlds are iconically combined in the album-finishing Feet Together, Face Up, on the Front Lawn, a psychedelic rock anthem sung in short phrases that ends with mind-blowing guitar heaviness.

One of the most interesting debuts of the last months, the Canadian yoo doo right have just released their first long play Don't Think You Can Escape Your Purpose and it hits so hard in the best way possible. 

The band describes their music in a very picturesque way, talking about the guitar and synthesizer soundscapes in which "solemn, chin-to-chest vocals dance in and out of the primordial sonic spectrum". And indeed, the album starts with a solid dose of guitar blizzard in a very post-rock-like compositions, that, at the same, suggest a lot of psychedelic rock influences, especially with the way the repetitive drums induce mesmerizing trance as do the similarly repetitive vocals that appear somewhere in the middle of the album. But the main magnet for me is the quality of the noise. It is always present, sometimes in the backgrounds, sometimes in more prominent role and especially attractive in the perfectly loud finish in Black Moth.

Their music seems to draw inspirations from both past (Marché des vivants' title may be taken from the event held in Poland to commemorate the Jewish victims of WWII) and future (extremely Black Mirror-like vibes can be felt in The Moral Compass of a Self-Driving Car particularly). And perhaps everything that fits their spacial and massive music that shows a lot of space vibes (they introduce themselves as "part interstellar ear-worms" after all) and induces striking feelings in the audience.

Gnoomes - MU! (2019) PL

Rosjanie z Permu tworzący jako Gnoomes to już pewna uznana marka na rosyjskiej scenie około-shoegaze'owej. W tym roku wydali chyba najdojrzalszy album MU!, którym można się zachwycać już od kilku miesięcy. Teraz w końcu i tutaj.

Zespół gra "sugestywną mieszankę psychodelicznego stargaze'u, kraut techno i kosmiche popu", ale najnowszy album postanowili zrobić "żywszy i mniej elektroniczny" aby "brzmieć dynamiczniej". Nagrany w starej posowieckiej radiostacji MU!, ujmuje unikalnym brzmieniem. Nie jest to kolejna płyta z muzyką między shoegaze'em a dream popem, a więcej tu eksperymentu, zimnej fali i kosmicznych wycieczek (tak jak w ultra interesującej Irmie).

A nawet jeśli niektóre utwory wydają się być bardziej konwencjonalne, tak jak Glasgow Coma State, z biegiem czasu rozwijają się w industrialno-post-rockowe kompozycje. To właśnie to industrialne, trochę czerpiące z klubowej atmosfery tempo w postaci szybkich i nerwowych bitów jest znakiem rozpoznawczym albumu. Może najbliżej tradycyjnego, old-schoolowego shoegaze'u spod znaku wczesnego Slowdive Rosjanie są w How Do You, a fakt, ze zachowali go na sam koniec świadczy, że celują raczej w około-shoegaze'owe eksperymenty.

Gnoomes - MU! (2019) EN

Perm-based Russians making music as Gnoomes must be considered as already well-established name on the Russian shoegaze-and-around scene. This year they released their probably most mature album yet called MU! which makes us fall in love for a couple months already, finally also here.

The band play "a potent mix of psychedelic stargaze, kraut techno and kosmiche pop", but they wanted to make their newest album "more live and less electronic" to "sound more dynamic". Recorded in an old post-soviet radio broadcast station, MU! inspires with its unique sound. It's not just another album filled with a blending of shoegaze and dream pop, but there's more of the experimental, coldwave and space trips (as in the super interesting Irmie).

And even if some tracks seem to be more conventional, just like Glasgow Coma State, with time they develop into industrial-post-rock compositions. Exactly this industrial, drawing a bit from the club atmosphere pace in form of fast and nervous beats is the album's characteristic trait. Perhaps  the most traditional, old-school, early-Slowdive-esque shoegaze can be found in How Do You, but even the fat hat the Russians saved it for the very end seems to prove that they'd rather work in shoegazish experiments instead.

Mason Cos - Throttle Redux (2018) EN

Bit of krautrock, bit of trip-hop, dark electronic sounds to dance to form Chicago. Mason Cos have released a short but very interesting album.

Its leitmotif is the combination of unorthodox electronics with traditionally swinging, almost danceable rhythm. What impresses the most are the synthesizer'based melodies, it's clear that Sadie Parker knows what he's doing and is not afraid of experimenting. It's well backed by the sounds of alive drums and looping electronic samples. Those are sometimes particularly mesmerizing and can be hardly ignored (as in Sum of it). The most interesting track of the album would be probably the longest one and comprising of all of the elements above-mentioned, the finishing track called High Praise. And this is the kind of praise the American get from me for this album.

Mason Cos - Throttle Redux (2018) PL

Trochę krautrock, trochę trip-hop, mroczna elektronika do tańczenia z Chicago. Mason Cos wydali niedawno niedługą ale bardzo interesującą płytę Throttle Redux.

Motywem przewodnim na niej jest połączenie nieortodoksyjnej elektroniki z tradycyjnie rozbujanym, prawie tanecznym rytmem. Przede wszystkim melodie na syntezatorze robią wrażenie, słychać, że Sadie Parker wie co robi i nie boi się eksperymentów i improwizacji. Dobrym do tego tłem są dźwięki żywej perkusji i zapętlające się elektroniczne sample. Te miejscami są wyjątkowo hipnotyzujące i niedające się od siebie oderwać (jak w Sum of it). Najciekawszy wydaje się być najdłuższy na płycie i zawierający wszystkie te elementy w wysokiej dawce, zamykający całość High Praise. I właśnie taki szacunek za ten album Amerykanie zyskują.

Nantes98 - Nantes98 (2017) EN

Nantes 98 has nothing to do with Brittany because they come from the distant Chile but who really cares? The important thing is that being fans of electronic music, krautrock, Slowdive and... football, they do their job.

I can't make up my mind to say whether the project is more electronic or guitar based. While getting deeper into the album I become convinced that those distinctions don't really matter. Already "Imagen Alterada" shows us both convincing guitars and pleasantly electronic backgrounds with some special effects making the trance-like pace even more interesting. Also, the title of the track is an answer to my dilemmas as it means exactly "an altered image".

The way the band see themselves is well illustrated by the title of the following track, "Bailo como puedo, lloro cuando quiero" ("I dance as I can, I cry when I want") because the album creates a moody disco for people who are not afraid to cry while dancing.

And yes, all of the inspirations are noticeable, football too. Go ahead and listen to "Apostemos al milagro".

Nantes 98 niewiele ma wspólnego z Bretanią bo wywodzi się z dalekiego Chile ale jakie to ma znaczenie? Ważne, że rozkochani w elektronice, krautrocku, Slowdive'ie i... futbolu muzycy robią dobrą robotę.

Nie potrafię się zdecydować, czy projekt jest bardziej elektroniczny czy gitarowy, z biegiem płyty dochodzę do wniosku, że takie podziały nie mają żadnego znaczenia. Już "Imagen Alterada" ukazuje nam wiarygodnie brzmiące gitary połączone z mile elektronicznym tłem i kilkoma efektami przełamującymi transowy rytm utworu. Zresztą jego tytuł jest trochę odpowiedzią na moje dylematy bo znaczy on tyle co "odmieniony obraz".

Wrażliwość zespołu najlepiej ilustruje natomiast tytuł kolejnego utworu - "Bailo como puedo, lloro cuando quiero" ("Tańczę jak potrafię, płaczę kiedy mam ochotę") bo całość tworzy nastrojowe disco dla ludzi, którzy nie wstydzą się płakać tańcząc.

Aha i wszystkie inspiracje są słyszalne. Tak, futbol też, puśćcie sobie "Apostemos al milagro".
