Catástrofe Club - El crecimiento infinito (2022)

Catástrofe Club are from Catalonia and make some super interesting post-punk-like eclectic music. The Josep Maria Herrera-David Molina duo are self-proclaimed "portraitists of the global catastrophe" who "compose and create with a particular sense of tragicomedy" and with an impressive approach to mixing genres in order to create a poignant message in an attractive form, just as it is on their new album.

El crecimiento infinito is the final part of their long play trilogy. My first thought when listening to this album was to check if this was a side project of Oscar D'Aniello a.k.a. Delafé, Spanish indie pop slash spoken word hip-hop artist the first albums of whom I really enjoyed back in the day. It's obviously not, but Herrera's voice and, most importantly, the spoken word way of "singing" bears strong resemblance here. However, the project, although very melodic, is far from a chill indie pop: it's post-punk delivered in various unique ways, so unfamiliar for the genre. The flow and catchiness of pop music and the lively electronica the compositions are built on are not your typical post-punk accessories.

However the whole theme they point the audience at, as they "question the individual, but in a somewhat calmer way, accepting the collapse and fatality of a social tragedy as something certain and inevitable that can only be contemplated", the collapse that has many reasons, but most importantly the consumptive way of life and the heavy but clever critique the artists employ, is taken right from the post-punk handbooks. So is the overall minimalism and slower pace that create this fantastic atmosphere within which the mesmerizing spoken word phrases go on and on and drill into the listener's mind.

El crecimiento infinito costs 8 EUR.

Casiotone - Progetto Zero Zero (2022)

Casiotone are Julien Bernard and Maryline Auderset who together make up a post-rock outfit from the western part of Switzerland. They debuted recently and while Progetto Zero Zero took me by surprise, I quickly understood what a unique and impressive take on the genre it presents.

The short album begins with The Dreamer, a track that is slow but it's slowness of continental plates, overwhelming and unstoppable. I love the work the artist put in the keyboard sound-infused compositions. I'm a sucker for including those in post-rock music, but in the duo's work, it's on another level. It seems that the guitar noise in many fragments is just a background for the flood of key sounds. But even when it's not about the keyboards, the sound of Casiotone is different than your typical post-rock outfit's. It's more nuanced and focused on the slow-paced atmosphere building without being particularly harsh and loud. And it works like charm.

I love the flow the compositions show - it's next to impossible to stop a track halfway through. And despite the fact that this music is not super loud - the darkness and heavy atmosphere is well audible here. I adore this unique, artsy style and honestly can't wait for more music from the duo.

The KVB - Unity (2021)

Their first album was released over a decade ago, since then, the British duo The KVB released several works that shaped the world of electronic airy music with Always Then and 2018's Only Now Forever as perfect examples. This year, Nicholas Wood managed to release his solo album under the moniker Saccades and now, the band is back on it again with the new album called Unity.

The KVB's main characteristic is that they create very airy music without much of the guitar sounds. But unlike, say, SPC ECO, they don't go towards moody trip-hop but more into synthwave with post-punk's vibes. But you probably know about it already, it's no surprise to anyone interested in nugaze-like music. The quality of their music rarely disappoints and the new album, again, is a special thing on this year's timeline. The synthesized sounds and beats create engaging compositions enriched with guitar sounds (but they sit in the backgrounds, rarely driving the whole music structures) and with the airy backing vocals. Kat Day's vocals have this deep, post-punk hue, even though they are always properly dispersed and airy.

But probably the most important thing is how well the band can adapt the synthwave's catchiness. Literally every song on the album has a memorable melody and constitutes a potential hit. In this sea of catchiness, I was particularly impressed by World on Fire with its minimalist but highly contagious chorus with a little unsettling lyrics.

Unity costs 7.99 GBP.

Nightcrush - You Mark Me the Deepest (2021)

They have been releasing singles for over a year now and finally decided to show their debut LP called You Mark Me the Deepest now; Nightcrush are an Italian duo Raffaele Galasso - Alessandra Cesano, who create an interesting take on ethereal wave music.

This is indeed an interesting one. The artists use a lot of synths and don't shy away from the wave genres as far as vocals and the overall mood are concerned, but at the same time they drown everything deep in the ethereal, dreamy atmosphere. The vocals are very much dispersed, shoegaze-style, the melodies withdrawn and hidden in the airy noise that is present in every second of the release. At the same time, you can hardly say it's not a loud playlist, but the massiveness of the sound builds up very slowly so you can hardly notice that a dispersed, ambient-pop like track turns into a noise soundscape shoegaze fans won't say no to. I especially like this in Lonely Sea that catches the way an actual sea creates a noise that exists mostly in the background of consciousness.

But it doesn't mean the Italians can't do some serious, full frontal noise. Moonpearl is a track the intention of which is to crush the audience from the first notes. I love how slow but steadily moving their music feels, it's not rapid like an avalanche but profoundly inevitable like glaciers. Very interesting take on noisy music.

You Mark Me the Deepest costs 7 EUR.

Kælan Mikla - Undir köldum norðurljósum (2021)

I remember getting to know Kælan Mikla when they came to Poland to support King Dude three years ago. Since then, they managed to release an almost perfect album Nótt eftir nótt, threw more exciting live gigs, create solo albums and now, they're back with a new album, Undir köldum norðurljósum, that is easily as good as the last one.

There's a lot of those darkwave's dark discotheque vibes all over the release (just have a go at Ósýnileg!): the synth backgrounds burst with lively sounds while still generating the gloomy and mesmerizing atmosphere. This is only empowered by the whispering vocals singing in Icelandic, the mystic and mysterious readings quickly get out of the scale. Especially in my favourite Sólstöður with its witch-like tribal screamings adding to the exciting horror vibes (it comes with absolutely zero surprise that the track's title translates to "Solstice"). The album's title, on the other hand, means "Under the Cold Northern Lights" but, truth be told, it doesn't feel that cold; maybe there's a hint that it is freezing outside, but here, in the vicinity of hot, dancing bodies and in the warm darkness they bring, it is hot and steamy.

Although their sounds differ much, Kælan Mikla seem to be close with the French icons of Alcest: they toured together and now they collaborated in the studio as well with Hvítir Sandar being more guitar-oriented and Alcest-like atmospheric. The three witches from Iceland will be back on tour when the day get longer again, and, fortunately, are coming to Kraków once again, this time as the main course - can't wait!

Public Service Broadcasting - Bright Magic (2021)

The British electro/post-rock collective is one of my favourite bands since their brilliant album Every Valley and their live gig down in the Guido mine in Zabrze. The artists are devoted to "teaching the lessons of the past through the music of the future" and accomplish this motto by creating concept albums that are almost like documentary movies but expressed by their exciting music. They are finally back with another LP called Bright Magic and it's a blast. Again.

This time it is slightly more difficult to find the theme behind the album. The artists moved, quite literally, from the Welsh small towns and valleys to Berlin, one of the biggest and liveliest metropolia in Europe, and the notion of moving as well as the history of the city is the album's main concept. It is still very much different from previous releases, being "less linear and narrative, instead it’s an impressionistic portrait of a city from the ground up" while in music it's reflected in the less usage of voice samples (with the exception in Der Rhythmus der Maschinen with its tasty reference to Every Valley). You could say it's a situation when a band looses their main characteristic trait, but perhaps it's something they needed to, nomen est omen, progress.

The move to Germany is also reflected in the guest artists on the album with Einstürzende Neubauten's Blixa Bargeld or Berlin-based Andreya Casablanca for instance. There's also a change in the music's vibes but while Every Valley, due to its theme, had a gloomier, bleaker atmosphere, the British artists have always created rather lively and even danceable electronica. So it's not much of a change, in fact it's more like an emphasis on the character of their music, reflected best, of course, in People, Let's Dance. No wonder that the brain behind the project, J. Willgoose, Esq., stated about the album: “I started to get a feeling for where the title of Bright Magic wanted to take me, towards ideas of illumination and inspiration, electricity and flashes of light and colour and sound" and it feels.

Hante. - Morning Tsunami (2021)

Hélène de Thoury, better known as Hante., is one of the artists who mix heavy and deep electronica with ethereal vocals, probably the best one too. Two years after her last album, she released the fifth one entitled Morning Tsunami and, as it is being commented, this may be her best one yet.

The album is "more electronic and brutal" then her previous works and "full of raw and dark emotions, this new production is a silent scream in our sick world". And when you go through de Thoury's social media, it becomes apparent that she is boiling with emotions indeed. It's always a good thing to transmute them into art which usually turns out to be genuine and touching as a result. In her music the feelings are expressed by the deep electronic sounds with very heavy, very dominant beats that bring the atmosphere of nervousness and anxiety rather than fun and joy. This is a particularly dark music in fact, the ambiance is suffocating thanks to the deep layer of electronic sounds with only subtle vocals laying on top.

There's no wonder that it's true what the label says about Hante. that she's "one-woman powerhouse of electronic might and pulsating energy". This mighty music contrasted with extremely melancholic vocals results in such beautiful compositions like Wasting Time that "reflects some of [the artist's] most intimate thoughts and insecurities" in an extremely catchy way, or my favourite and the most ethereal Catharsis.

Fawning - Illusions of Control (2021)

I'm kind of surprised that the long play debut album from the American Fawning isn't hyped that much as it deserves. I remember discovering their EP Too Late and how big it sounded to me back in 2019. Now we can finally listen to more of their fascinating take on shoegaze on Illusions of Control.

The duo Cheyenne Avant (known from Night School) and Devin Nunes (Whirr) make music that strikes with the ethereal atmosphere from the very first seconds of the intro in At Fault. Traditionally for dream pop projects, it is achieved by the exceptionally subtle and airy vocals, it's the kind that conveys mostly atmosphere and emotions and less so the melodies. And this is the best kind. It is accompanied by slow-paced music with the main roles reserved for synthesizer sounds blending into electronic haze that fills the space all over the place.

The songs here have a very melancholic flavour, especially for this kind of electronic dream pop genre. Although the synths can be pretty lively, the overall sadness of the release simply brings it down and drowns with melancholy (especially when joined by these weirdly nostalgic saxophone sounds in Nothing Matters). It is further underlined by beautiful ambient-like passages between the songs and in the final track, and even if there are livelier tracks here (like You're Not One to Cry most notably), I would say it's one of the saddest albums I heard this year.

Illusions of Control costs 7 USD.

Superdrone - Solargaze (2020) PL

Z jednej strony niezaprzeczalna dawka oniryzmu, gęsta atmosfera i przygaszone wokale, z drugiej żwawe tempo i nawał synthów.

I wykonanie też dobre.

Superdrone - Solargaze (2020) EN

The English artists of Superdrone appeared on my blog already last year with an EP called The Creation. As always, the band emphasize their uniqueness and the quality of their psychedelic music. It's difficult to question this as the music speaks for itself. It's time to listen to Solargaze.

Exciting and ecstatic dream pop, this is how you should call the band's works. On one hand a dose of oneirism that can't be denied with the dense atmosphere and withdrawn vocals, on the other, the lively pace and a storm of synths. They are the ones that are responsible for the sky-is-the-limit music of Superdrone, they lead the audience to the ecstatic hypnosis that is difficult to shake off if anyone even wanted to do so. Those experiences are perfectly depicted in the graphic side of the release as well as in the title itself, it's clear that the band know what they want to do.

And the execution is good as well. And so tracks like Face Me Away, Cellar Door ot the expressive finish in Today make the listener want to dance and experience at the same time.

Talk to Her - Love Will Come Again (2020) EN

Post-punk in various forms is not an often situation on this blog. So it's even better that it changes now because of the band that is only now debuting as Love Will Come Again makes the first LP by the Italian band Talk to Her.

This album talks "about love as an overwhelming power, a mystical experience of life that might be even the hardest". It's a guide through the process of falling in love, from the innocence to love confessions. No wonder that for a coldwave post-punk, in Talk to Her's music there's a ot of emotions. First of all conveyed by the extraordinary vocals. Also, each of the songs makes a cold banger, almost all of the melodies make you intuitively hum along and it's just another meta-commentary to falling in love.

The tracks that automatically get inside you are Truth, Hollow or the album's closure in the droning Confessions. But the most important thing is how good the album looks as a whole. And remember, it's just the debut.

Love Will Come Again costs 9 EUR.

Talk to Her - Love Will Come Again (2020) PL

Przede wszystkim słychać to w niesamowitym wokalu.

A to, przypominam, dopiero debiut.

Indoor Voices - Animal (2020) EN

Jonathan Relph, Canada-based artist, on Saint Valentine's released the new album of his stage persona Indoor Voices. Animal makes a subtle flirt between slowcore and ambient.

The albums is filled with ambitious electronic music, ambient soundscapes that are, somehow only coincidentally. accompanied by vocals and melodies. Still though, the ful focus atmosphere is filling the most space of the album and it's helped by the layers of synth-electronic sounds but also some ultra-delicate dream pop vocals and a huge dose of oneiric potential.

The ways in which Relph is capable of bringing the audience into this oneiric trance are what deserves the highest respect here. Soundscape interludia are of the same importance as the slowcore ballads and have the same goal - welcome the listener to a dream. Except for No One, as this album's closure makes a real dream pop banger/

Indoor Voices - Animal (2020) PL

Jonathan Relph, artysta z Kanady wydał na Walentynki nową płytę swojego scenicznego alter ego Indoor Voices. Animal to subtelny flirt slowcore'u i ambientu.

Poza No One, bo zamykający płytę kawałek to prawdziwy dreampopowy banger.

WatchCamp March with Alice Baldwin, Gant, Mighty Bear, Stygean, акульи слёзы (2020) EN

Alice Baldwin - Please Tell My Mum to Burn Me

One f the last singles from the irreplaceable Moderna Records label. This time it's neoclassical composer Alice Baldwin and this touching piece played entirely on piano. The single costs 1 EUR (1,5 CAD).

Gant - Tales of a Sacred Night

True, it's more an EP than a single, but because of its length it appears here. The Mexican duo playing dark post-punk or darkwave, a bit of musical minimalism, a bit of attractive, dangerous atmosphere. The album costs 4 EUR (6 CAD).

Mighty Bear - Álfaskeið

Absolutely my favourite drag queen - dark and gothic, visually fantastic, but also musically speaking, after some avant-pop songs, there's this new single that goes more towards attractive but dense and synth-filled soundscape. It costs 1 USD.

Stygean - Not Blind

Lo-fi and dark shoegaze from the Malaysian artist, with very unclear vocals but instead being extremely melodic. Very promising piece. The single costs whatever you want to pay.

Gant - Tales of a Sacred Night

Kosztuje on 4 złotych (1 USD).

The Breakfast Menu - Sad Bastard Music (2020) PL

Niezwykły projekt z Illinois, The Breakfast Menu, wydał właśnie swój pierwszy album. Dziwny, depresyjny i dostarczający fantastycznej rozrywki Sad Bastard Menu.

The Breakfast Menu - Sad Bastard Music (2020) EN

Weirdly intriguing project from Illinois, The Breakfast Menu, have just released the first album. Odd, depressive and providing fantastic fun Sad Bastard Menu.

The artist (artists?) from the very beginning doesn't hide that he follows the new music's characteristic trait of fascination of death and depression while serving it in attractive, melodic and charming way. There's no hiding it, the ost important moment of the album is the absolutely fantastic song Think I'm Dying, filled with lo-fi atmosphere and catchiness with a chorus that is immediately hummed and great arrangements.

But it's not a one-track album, quite the opposite. There's a lot of this neurotic music, perfectly fitting this lo-fi climates. Minimal, mostly at least, compositions and direct lyrics only make it more powerful. Very good debut.
