My new year's resolutions to get more sleep and enjoy more time with my family are going splendidly I'm happy to report. It leaves less time for blogging, but hopefully you won't hold it against me.

As a little peace offering, we have a fabulous giveaway for you! I recently purchased some handmade jewelry from a fabulous new Etsy shop called Mimi Lou Jewelry. I loved this dyed turquoise initial charm bracelet and this fun anchor bracelet and had to have them for an upcoming cruise. They'll be perfect for the warm shores of the Caribbean. Miriam, the cute shop owner who has been creating jewelry since kindergarten, is offering our readers a giveaway and a generous coupon code!

albion fit swimwear {giveaway & coupon}

READ THE REST OF THIS POST -->>>» |

It's the last week of summer for my kids. I'll admit I am ready for them to go back so I can get. something. done. But I also get sooo sad when summer is over. No, I am not looking forward to "sweater weather" and the leaves changing color like most of you (although ask me about hot chocolate weather and you'll hear another story). I love having adventures with my kids, sleeping in, the warm summer nights, the impromptu s'mores get togethers. So we've been cramming as many activities into this last week as humanly possible, including tons of water activities. Which means I NEEDed a new swim suit (my one Target cheapy was not cutting it, sorry to say).

chalkboard photo prop tutorial {and giveaway!}

Three cheers for back-to-school! I love the school supplies, the ushering in of fall, and the extra time to get things done while my kids are gone. Am I a mean mom? I have friends who cry when their kids go back (love you Melynie!), but aside from a little blubbering as they walk into the school, it's a good day for me. So I think we should celebrate with a giveaway!

But back to the school supplies for a minute--did I mention I love chalk? I do. I love it. But I have you ever tried to find a box of white chalk at back-to-school time? It's nearly impossible. After trying Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Michael's, Target, and JoAnn, my husband finally tracked down a box at Office Max. What a sweetie. He knew I needed it for these darling chalkboard photo props for my kids' first day of school.

I started with these blank MDF signs I got from my friend Holly of the Say Hello Shop. She is amazing! She's a talented illustrator  and her shop is full of fun finished pieces and unfinished projects for home decor and entertaining. Here's a quick tutorial for how to take these unfinished signs and turn them into fun photo props!

How to Make a Chalkboard Photo Prop

Supplies:
*Blank wood sign like these from Say Hello Shop
*Chalkboard paint (I used Martha Stewart's)
*Foam brush
*Chalk

1. Paint your board with an even layer of the chalkboard paint. Allow to dry and repeat until your board is completely covered (I did 3 coats total). Allow to cure for 24 hours (or whatever your paint recommends).

2. When your paint has cured, season your chalkboard before using it. To do this, rub chalk over the entire surface. If you don't, the first thing you write on it will stay there for-ev-er.

Now it's time to practice your cursive writing! There has been a lot of chalkboard art going around Pinterest lately--I wish I had the handwriting of some of these people! But alas. I used my best handwriting, then shaded a little on the downstrokes.

We couldn't leave the baby out!

My kids went crazy for the speech bubble chalkboard. I told my 8-year-old he could write whatever you want and this is what I got. Goofball.

Fun, right? What's even more fun is that we're giving away this set of MDF signs from the Say Hello Shop! You can paint them with chalkboard paint, cover them with patterned paper, or leave them blank--it's up to you.

To enter, visit Say Hello Shop and leave us a comment with the item you love most in her shop. Be sure to do it by Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 11:59pm PT. Here are a few of my favorites. . .

Good luck!

You've been waiting so patiently for our winner of the Beep! Beep! quilt pattern giveaway--thank you! It's been a bit crazy around here with our big move. I love Vanessa for giving us this darling pattern for all our cute boys out there. And our winner is. . .

Beth Buster who said:
Well, I have 5 boys, and my very first nephew. I would probably have to draw a name out of a hat to see who got the really cool quilt! Or, I could just make the quilt 6 different times! This is the most amazing quilt I have seen for boys!

Kelly Simonsen who said:
Oh I love this! My son's room is getting redecorated this fall to a retro route 66 theme and this would be perfect for his bed! Thanks for the great give a way!

Mhairi who said:
I would make a quilt for my son. And I would love to use some of the designs for a pillow for his bed too. Then I would probably have to make one for my little girl who loves trucks almost as much as her brother!

beep! beep! boys quilt {pattern giveaway}

Many of you know that between Jessica and I, we have six boys, zero girls. Not that I'm complaining AT ALL, but I do have to say that girl quilts are usually more fun to make than boy quilts. Except every once in a while, when a darling quilt pattern like this comes along! I'm in love!

My little guy still does not have a quilt from me yet. Yet. I will get to it before he's one! And I love that this quilt, Beep! Beep! by Vanessa of Lella Boutique, might actually make it possible! It's a pretty simple design with super simple quilting (straight lines are my favorite).

Vanessa says that this is a quilt anyone of any sewing skill level can make. It utilizes simple applique technique; most of the work is tracing and cutting out the car and arrow shapes! The comprehensive pattern is available in her shop in PDF or paper format.

And because Vanessa is so sweet, she is giving away 5 copies of Beep! Beep! to our readers! To enter to win a paper OR digital copy of this quilt pattern, just leave us a comment and tell us what you would do with this pattern if you won. Would you make it for your own little guy, or a nephew, a friend's baby? Would you use that boy fabric stash you've been holding on to for years, waiting for the perfect quilt? Let us know by Thursday, July 19 2012 at 11:59pm PT--we'll post the winners on the 20th. Can't wait? Order the the pattern from Vanessa's shop now!

my new favorite sewing book {giveaway}

I've mentioned a couple of times that we're renting a furnished house for a year. We didn't bring a stick of furniture or any home decor items. Needless to say I got busy really quickly adding some fun accents to make the place feel a little more like our home. I bought fabric to make a bunch of throw pillows for the sectional, and I finished a couple, but until last month still had a pile of fabric and pillow inserts sitting in my craft room.

I visited my friend Vanessa of V. and Co. the last time I was up her way (she's another recent Iowa transplant) and she was sweet enough to give me a copy of her new book, Make It Sew Modern. Lucky me! It is amazing. I love every project and all her little sewing tips and tricks. She is such a pro (check out her newest venture--online sewing classes!). I love the little bits of texture she uses in her projects, and the book was just the inspiration I need to finish my pillows. . .

 . . .like these cute rosettes! I knew I wanted this design, but I didn't know exactly how to sew them on as I went. She had a similar project that showed it step-by-step. Yahoo!

And her perfect pleating tutorial helped me with this one. She did it waaay better than the way I was going to do it.

If you don't own this book yet, it's your lucky day! Vanessa gave me a second copy of Make It Sew Modern to giveaway to one of our darling readers! Check out Vanessa's blog (as if you haven't already), and leave us a comment with your favorite V. and Co. project and you'll be entered to win. Yea! Do it by Wednesday, April 18, 2012 or you'll be too late!

yarn pom pom garland tutorial {and lion brand giveaway!}

Recently our friend Kelly from According To Kelly and Lion Brand Yarn gave me the chance to get a little creative with yarn. As in make something with yarn without your crochet hooks! Yikes! It took a little thinking, but I came up with this fun yarn pom pom garland for my Christmas mantel using some of Lion Brand's most festive yarns (like the Silky Twist and Martha Stewart Crafts Lofty Wool Blend yarns) and and their Pom Pom Maker. I even got the boys to help! It came together quickly and I'm already planning a birthday pom pom garland. . .or how cute would it be to hang brightly-colored pom poms from the ceiling in a nursery? Of course I'll be using them on upcoming crochet patterns as well. Pom poms are great stash busters!

Check out the full tutorial here at According To Kelly, along with some other super fun non-knit, non-crochet yarn projects, then come back and enter our giveaway!
You could win all the supplies needed to make your own pom pom garland! Just leave us a comment by Wednesday, December 21st at 11:59pm PT. Now go check out the tutorial!
Good luck!

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post and giveaway by Lion Brand Yarn. The ideas, opinions, and how-to instructions are all my own, however I am a loyal Lion Brand yarn customer!

uupp giveaway

One of the best things about blogging is being introduced to wonderful fellow bloggers and creative friends. We also get to pass those great discoveries onto all of you! Today, we have a great giveaway from a great etsy shop called UUPP.

UUPP, sells unique and customized art prints for home décor and gifts. I started my store UUPP, because of some difficult challenges that came my families way over the past few years. Being a creative person, I chose to channel my creativity into making art that made me smile and feel hopeful; uplifting quotes, yummy cupcakes, wisdom from Julia Child, things about life, laughter, faith. It helped me tremendously and it is so nice to ‘share’ this good energy with others. My work speaks through vintage papers, expressive typography, colorful patterns and textures, and occasionally some polka dots, just to be dangerous...
XOXO Carrie
Creator of UUPP

I just love that! We can all use some inspiration during life's tough times. And even on the good days! We all need to be reminded to stay focused on the positive.
Here are some great ones from the UUPP store.

And I think this next one is my favorite. I love it!

Today, UUPP is offering our readers the chance to win a $30 credit to the store! To enter you need to visit UUPP and find your favorite piece of art. Then come back and tell us what it is. For a second entry you can like UUPP on Facebook. This giveaway will end on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 11:59pm PT.

long-arm quilting {giveaway & coupon}

It's a little embarrassing how long I've been working on this quilt. I'm not even going to admit when I bought the fabric. But I still love it, and I decided that before I left Seattle I would get it done. I almost got there. :) Just the binding left to do. Add it to the list.
The only reason that I actually have it quilted is that I got a little help. I love quilting my quilts--it's one of the most satisfying parts for me (I know many of you disagree with me here!). But as this was a large quilt and I really didn't want to risk messing it up, I sent it out to be quilted by a professional on a long-arm quilting machine. Best. Decision. Ever.

My friend Karen has an amazing set up. I covet her machine! The hardest part was deciding what design to use. Check out just a sampling of them here and here. The other great thing was Karen's personal advice. Otherwise it might have been too overwhelming to choose a design!

Because I know so many of you are in the same boat as me when it comes to finishing projects, we're offering a giveaway of 50% off quilting on any size quilt, any design quilting! To enter, just leave us a comment telling us what quilting pattern(s) you like best from Karen's blog. Easy peasy! Entries must be received by Monday, November 14th at 11:59pm PT.

Here's what Karen helped me choose. A darling design worked inside each block, with a similar design around the border. Love it!

Karen is also offering a 25% off coupon to our readers! To receive your 25% Off Coupon (no expiration date), simply email "25% OFF COUPON" to KarensQuiltMagic@gmail.com. Be sure to check out Karen's pricing and quilting instructions, too.

You should really give yourself a break this holiday season and let someone else do the hard work for you!
