It has been a while since I wrote for my category ‘La Française’. This week, I’d like to dedicate my post to Marion Cotillard. I’ve been a fan of hers since she had a small role in Taxi– one of France’s most critically acclaimed movies. Who would I thought at that time that she would be the first person to win a prestigious Academy Award for a role in French? That happened in 2007 for her starring role as the French singer Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose.

She is internationally praised for her style à la Française! Her style is elegant and effortless – she is often seen wearing jeans, flat shoes, scarves and hats. That doesn’t prevent her from making fashion statements on the red carpet. I particularly loved the mermaid-looking dress by Jean-Paul-Gaultier that she wore at the Oscars in 2008 and the exquisite midnight blue gown by Christian Dior that she wore at the Oscars in 2009.

She has also been the face of Dior since 2008 and never cease to surprise me as to how she will look like for each campaign. Marion pulls off a totally different look and style for every season. You’d think one would get bored of the same face after six years, but the pictures speak for themselves. Have a look at Marion’s best fashion moments and let me know your thoughts.

LA FRANÇAISE : LOU DOILLON

One of my personal biggest fashion inspiration is Lou Doillon and she is the French woman I will be posting about today in my new category ‘La Française’. She is the daughter of the beautiful British singer Jane Birkin and the French film director Jacques Doillon. Maybe you know her sister even better, the actress Charlotte Gainsbourg (daughter of Jane and Serge Gainsbourg)!

Lou has released her critically acclaimed album ‘Places’ earlier this year and already won the prestigious French prize ‘Victoire de la Musique’ for Best Female Artist. Besides her talent as a singer, she has also modelled for Givenchy, The Kooples, Isabel Marant and many more fashion brands- she even modelled for the infamous Pirelli calendar! She is currently the face for Chloe SS14 collection. But what inspires me the most about her is the way she handles her personal style- whatever she wears, she always looks relaxed, cool and comfortable. I love the way she does (or doesn’t do) her hair and the bohemian-chic pieces she always goes for- the hats, the fringes, the feathers. I love browsing through her pictures as she always knows how to combine high-fashion pieces to more high-street casual items and still manages to look effortlessly stylish.

Here is what she told the New York Times a few weeks ago regarding her style, and her comments make me love her even more- yes you got it, I am her biggest fan! haha:

“I’ve got this huge coat, woolly coat — this very, very long Saint Laurent coat — which I always wear. It’s always cold in planes. And because I’m always tired — and I’m always cold when I’m tired — I love huge things where I add up layers.”

“I have a huge scarf from Hermès that I bought the day I signed my record deal. I had never had an Hermès scarf. And I ran to buy one, thinking, ‘Now, this is a symbol, I need one, I need an Hermès scarf,’ which actually now I’m quite embarrassed about. Most of the time I twist it so much that no one notices it, and just bundle it around me.”

“I always bring basic stuff like jeans and T-shirts. But in fact, it’s a mistake because as soon as I hit a place, I go to every thrift shop around. And I think that every day I’ve been on stage in what I found in that city.”

“When I was a little girl, I hated my family’s style because my sister Charlotte and my sister Kate and my father Jacques and my uncles and Serge and my mom all had 501 Levi’s, a white T-shirt and a bloody pair of Converse, and I couldn’t stand it. So I was this kind of Christmas tree. I hated the kind of casual chic French vibe. I wanted to be more kooky.”

L’une de mes plus grandes inspirations dans le monde de la mode n’est autre que Lou Doillon et c’est elle dont je vais parler aujourd’hui dans ma nouvelle catégorie ‘La Française’. C’est la fille de Jane Birkin et du réalisateur Jacques Doillon. Peut-être que vous connaissez sa sœur encore mieux, Charlotte Gainsbourg (la fille de Jane et Serge Gainsbourg) !

Lou a sorti son album ‘Places’ qui a été super bien reçu par les critiques au début de l’année et a reçu une ‘Victoire de la Musique’ pour Meilleure Artiste de l’année. En plus de son talent en tant que chanteuse, elle a aussi été l’égérie de Givenchy, The Kooples, Isabel Marant et d’autres grandes marques de mode- elle a même fait partie du calendrier Pirelli ! Elle est actuellement l’égérie de Chloé pour la collection Printemps-Eté 2014. Mais ce qui m’inspire le plus à propos de Lou, c’est la façon dont elle joue avec son propre style- qu’importe ce qu’elle porte, elle a toujours l’air relax, cool et confortable. J’adore la façon dont elle fait (ou pas) ses cheveux et son côté boho-chic- ses chapeaux, les franges, les plumes. J’adore parcourir ses photos et découvrir comment elle combine des pièces de marque de luxe avec des éléments plus simples et elle arrive toujours à être stylée en toute simplicité.

Voici ce qu’elle a répondu au New York Times il y a quelques semaines en ce qui concerne son style- ses commentaires sont trop mignons- oui d’accord, d’accord, vous l’aurez compris, je suis sa plus grande fan ! <3

« J’ai ce grand manteau, tout en laine- c’est super, super long, de Saint Laurent- et je le porte tout le temps. Il fait toujours froid dans les avions. Et parce que je suis tout le temps fatiguée- et que j’ai toujours froid quand je suis fatiguée- j’adore les gros trucs sur lesquels je peux ajouter plus de couches »

« J’ai cette énorme foulard de chez Hermès que je me suis achetée le jour où j’ai signé mon contrat avec la maison de disque. Je n’avais jamais eu d’écharpe Hermès. Et j’ai couru en acheter une, en pensant ‘Maintenant, c’est un symbole, j’en ai besoin, j’ai besoin d’un foulard Hermès’ ce qui finalement me gêne maintenant. La plupart du temps, je l’enroule tellement que personne ne le remarque ».

« Je rapporte toujours des trucs basiques genre jeans et tee-shirts. Mais en faites, c’est une erreur, car dès que j’arrive quelque part, je vais dans tous les magasins de fripes que je peux trouver. Et je pense bien qu’à chaque fois que je suis montée sur scène, je porte ce que j’ai trouvé dans cette ville-même. »

« Quand j’étais petite, je détestais le style de ma famille car, mes sœurs Charlotte et Kate, mon père Jacques et mes oncles, Serge et ma mère ne portaient que des jeans Levi’s 501, un tee-shirt blanc and une paire de Converse, et je ne pouvais plus le supporter. Donc j’étais un peu comme un sapin de Noël. Je détestais le style chic à la Française. Je voulais être plus excentrique. »
