Lord of the Flies: it was about kids, and I was a kid. The plot was simple and the descent into savagery was believable. I read it at the age of 12 – it was only later that I grasped the symbolism of the severed pig’s head and the sexual subtext. I felt that if I could do something like that, I’d be happy.
