PETER & THE TEST TUBE BABIES.

I remember listening to this record for the first time - I was living in my Aunt Gloria's basement in downriver Detroit, circa 1986. I was 17, freshly out of high school in my small Tri-Cities Area town - (Bay City) - and trying to "live the dream" of moving to Detroit to be a "skatepunk". I was bagging groceries during the day & driving my shitty car all over to The Motor City at night looking for skate spots & girls & generally a good time, ya know?

(I didn't mention that my aunt was / is a born-again X-tian who put up w/ my heathen ass, but none the less, she was awesome as fuck & let me do my thing. She also made some serious carnitas & homemade chorizo, so why would I bother to complain)?

Anyways, to make a long story short, I first heard this while listening to a "Brave New Waves" radio broadcast on CJAM out of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. That's also where I heard a ton of stuff ranging from bands like Alien Sex Fiend running the gamut of "alternative" all the way to Black Flag & all points of chaos / art-damage in between.

I haven't listened to this album in a really long time, but every time I hear it, I still feel as though it is a "classic" U.K. punk album. The mix is a bit thin, but the riffs on this thing are epic. Excellent rhythm section & vocal harmonies abound as well. A band that definitely has their own sound. Not much of the rest of their catalog speaks to me, but it ain't bad - it's just that this album (for me anyways) is their pinnacle.

RUDIMENTARY PENI.

Not much needs to be said about the legacy of this band that still ain't finished...

Rudimentary Peni is one of those timeless punk bands that everyone seems to be a fan of, or refers to as an influence, yet no one even comes close to the way they sound.

That is a good thing.

What I offer to you today is also a good thing - the demos for the DEATH CHURCH album - such a classic - well fuck - ALL of their recorded output is classic, honestly, but um… can I use any more hyphens and parentheses and create more run-on sentences?

YES I CAN…

Not much bottom end in the mix, but all the fury & anguish is in this THIRTY YEAR-OLD RECORDING. I'll bet most of you were still a few years away from being mistakes in your dad's ball-sac when this came out...

Enjoy this recording - heading off to Detroit for a week.

I'm hoping to get one more post up this week, so check back soon (all three of you who actually read this shit & comment, etc).

VENOM.

Okay, so it's been awhile since the last post - nothing new about that - but I've been in Detroit & Mid-Michigan revisiting the family / old friends / new friends / dive bars old & new.

During a moment of clarity between the beer runs & bar runs, I split from my Mom's farm & headed in to "the city" for some free Wi-Fi action at the Wirt Public Library in Bay City & I posted up a little classic-something for you - enjoy!

"Lay down your souls to the gods rock 'n roll!

Metal ten fold through the deadly black hole,

Riding hell's stallions bareback and free.

Taking our chances with raw energy"...

MOTÖRHEAD.

You can't go wrong with - (nor can you be a true fan of the rock) - if you don't have some Motörhead in your collection…

While you probably have a shit-ton of it (as do I), I find these recordings from the "On Parole" re-issue super-intriguing in the fact that this session sounds like boozy "bar rock" - but in a way that sounds good, ya know?
Much more of a 50's / 60's rock style coming from this - the original lineup - than the airborne volume machine that they would become shortly thereafter.

A nice touch, for sure, and something every fan of the band should own.

JUDAS PRIEST.

Live albums can tend to be kind of one-dimensional and unexciting, but this one is none of those things mentioned above - it is also under scrutiny as to wether it actually is live or not.

The band claims there were guitar touch-ups, and that some of the vocals were redone due to Rob having the flu on those nights back in February of 1979 in Tokyo, but honestly I could give a shit less as this is a kick-ass record that grabbed me right by my teenage testicles back in the day. The tone K.K. Downing got back then was razor sharp & white-hot; one of my favorite Flying-V players to this day...

Enjoy this (timeless) blast-from-the-past.

DEVIATED INSTINCT.

True leaders of the pack as far as crafting the bass-heavy crust sound known as "Stenchcore", Deviated Instinct are still out there 25 years into it.
You ever wonder what you'll be doing in 25 years?
These guys are still practicing their crunchy / crusty craft, and we are all better off for it.

There are many pretenders are to throne - Deviated Instinct wrote the curriculum for how it's done properly.

NAPALM DEATH.

I find it hard to believe that 440 posts in to this thing, I haven't ranted & raved over those death-grind kings from Birmingham yet...

While they've had numerous personnel changes and style changes, they have always kept the blast close at hand - also hard to believe is the fact that as a band they will have been together for 30 YEARS NEXT YEAR!

You can find most of their catalogue all over the web, but I pulled this 3-EP collection out today -hadn't heard it in some time- so thought I'd share, as it sounded real good to these ears.

(Jesse Pintado you are dearly missed, sir).

CHARGED G.B.H.

The last of the really good G.B.H. albums - their third release overall - just so happens to be my favorite as well.
While the levels on this recording could use a good remastering, I feel that this era of G.B.H. proved to be their hardest/heaviest/darkest w/ excellent songwriting.

The cover is pretty awesome, too.

ZYGOTE.

While I wasn't a huge Amebix fan (suprised to hear that, aren't you?), Zygote came next for most of the members of afforementioned band and they fucking kick my ass.
Wish they would have lasted longer than they did.
Amazing fucking album!

ENGLISH DOGS.

"Where Legend Began" is a record I bought for $3.98 new at some really bad mall record chain store when I was like in 8th. or 9th. grade living in a small town in Mid-Michigan. I'm pretty sure I bought a Devo record and a Ted Nugent that day as well.

This was probably the only "punk rock" record in the store; most likely wasn't supposed to be shipped to that store or something, but I bought it and it was totally NOT what I expected it to sound like. I was thinking something along the lines of G.B.H. or Anti-Nowhere League as to what it might sound like.
All my friends hated it, but I still love it.

Enjoy...

IRON MONKEY.

These guys all went on to "bigger groups", but I certainly miss the caterwaul they collectively created back in the day.
Quite possibly Britain's answer to Eyehategod.
I sure miss this band...
