SAMHAIN.

Offered up today for your internet leeching consumption is a collection of (studio) outtakes from Samhain's "Magnum Opus" album, November Coming Fire.

The mix is loud, unbalanced, and awesome.

Honestly?
I'm always a fan of the rough mix / demo stuff more often than not, and this one is far more fun for me to listen to than the final product.

Fuzzy/overdriven chorus guitarage, plodding "soggy" drums, buried keyboard melodies, lots of howls & shit like that… no spray-on hair or cat litter shopping frenzies yet…

ACEPHALIX.

Some of my old partners-in-crime who employ a nice mixture of all things related to Motorhead/Japanese crustcore/blackened death/first-generation HC/Nor-Cal thrash.

I'm having a hard time writing this - probably due to the fact that they fucking slayed 'em all live at Bender's last night.
The copious amounts of booze involved certainly didn't help...

TRIAC.

Wicked-chaotic grindcore from Charm City (Baltimore) MD that strays from the norm.
While they grind like fucking madmen, they also throw some sick fucking leads out there, and the vocals are cold and painful - so soothing!

If you dig the painful strains of Hirudinea, Watchmaker, Raw Radar War, Starkweather - shit like that - well then, you NEED to check these guys out.
Definitely pick up their DEAD HOUSE DREAMING CD - it really hits the spot!

Enjoy this live set from 2005 - I made you some cover art as well.

*By the way, if anybody has the Triac - In the Blue Room CDEP/7" ripped, could you PLEASE send me a D/L link? Thanks*

SELFISH.

You know, when it comes to the whole D-Beat/Crust thing, I am a true fan.
I really am.
The problem is, most bands of said genre don't bring anything new or original to the table.

I guess that's part of the formula - and that's fine and all - but there are a few bands that do set themselves apart from the rest of the back-patch bands.

Selfish is one of them.

These Finlandia rockers mesh creatively heavy riffs, sick leads, and rad "gang-along" choruses.
On top of that, they break away from the pack with COLOR IMAGERY - and it works!

Selfish - Cause Pain

(If you have anything else by them besides this or the "Tear Silence Into Pieces" Split, PLEASE SEND ME A D/L LINK - thanks!)

MENTORS.

Here's the first full-length from the Kings of Sleaze Rock / Rape Rock.

This band is still touring years after the death of El Duce'.
Who the fuck would want to see that I tell you...

WILL HAVEN.

How the fuck do I describe this record other than " I dig this"?

Late last night I decided to go through some old stacks of CD's down in the garage and found this little gem that I was pretty obsessed with about six years ago.
Things were a bit different then - I wasn't a parent yet - and I used to be able to blast tunes & stay up *ahem* "partying" until early the next morning.

This CD was in heavy rotation on most days/nights.

Them days is gone, but the soundtrack to those years remains, and this still sounds good to me.

Lots of fat riffs drilled into the ground, creating a heavy groove w/o quite being hardcore, metalcore, stoner rock, or (ugh) "nu-metal".
This CD is perfect for a late night solo drive through bad weather on a stretch of unfamiliar road - maybe that should have been my entire description for this, huh? - anyways, Sacramento, CA's Will Haven broke up for a few years, then got back together a year or two ago & released a new record but honestly? That record ain't so hot.

Enjoy this shining moment.

DYSTOPIA.

A good live set from Seattle recorded in 2002.

(Updates are still happening - I'm not gonna let the blog die - it just wont be as frequent as it once was.
Bear with me as I rebuild my music collection.

HARD DRIVE FAILURE SUCKS.

SHIPWRECK A.D.

Riff-heavy / heavy-riffed heavy hardcore - that makes sense, right?
All I know is that I like it, and if you are a regular here at L-RV then you pretty much know what I'm in to.

(I don't foresee my HD coming back to life any time soon; the holidays have put a serious lock-down on my spending right now so a new HD & file recovery will have to wait for awhile.
Still, I'm not gonna give this up - it's too much fun)...

SNAKE NATION.

A side project of Dean and Woody from the REAL Corrosion of Conformity - not that Pepper Keenan bullshit version of said band - that came out years ago but went over like broccoli flavored ice cream.
Didn't care for this very much back in the day, but doesn't sound so bad to my ears now, actually.
Brian Walsby played drums in this band - you know him from his rippin' old-school hardcore flyer art, right? Anyways, this thing never came out on CD, and so I wrote to him a year ago or so and for $2 he burned me a CD-R & drew me a cool little cover for it.
Buy his MANCHILD series of books, and listen to EYE FOR AN EYE, willya?

DOOMRIDERS.

Solid heavy rock without pretension that has been mopping the floor on tour with Danzig lately.
These recordings are from a tour with Boris, and were released on a 1000 vinyl copy only release - I'd take Doomriders over Boris myself - pretty much if it has a member of Converge within its ranks it's gonna kick ass.

This will not disappoint.

SUPLECS.

Why these guys never got bigger is beyond me, but maybe it has something to do with the (other) bands these guys are players in? Anyways, the record is a gem to me - even if they do cover the fucking Beatles...

Slow and heavy, lurching and cold.
Yeah, it's real good (and deserves a good listen).

SOILENT GREEN.

Out of all the NOLA dirthead/sludge bands, these guys don't get the credit they deserve. They have suffered through some serious setbacks in their history - as much as Eyehategod - if not more.
While many folks may think that all grind/tech/metal/core sounds the same (surely not the fine patrons of this blog!), that cannot be said for Soilent Green - especially on this album. A must-have, in my opinion.

A band I feel never quite got the full credit that they deserve (especially in the States). ANY band Jonah Jenkins is a member of is gonna be good, but these guys were special...

ASSCHAPEL.

Nice and heavy.
Dirty and sludgy.
Growls and barks.
Fast and manic.
Chops for fuckin' days.
Yeah, it must be Asschapel!

Nashville, Tennessee might be known for their D-beat punk rock (and shitty "young country") but these dirt-heads definitely give "The Music City" a solid boot in it's shitkicker-wearing ass, now don't they?
