PULLING TEETH.

Charm City hardcore w/ a fresh and solid bent in the way they lay it down.
While these guys are a "Deathwish" band due to the association w/ said label - most of those bands on that label get/give themselves WAY too much credit - P.T. actually gets less respect than many others (who pale in comparison) in the "metalcore" genre.
They may play HC shows & such, but they play their heavy HC w/ more metal-than-'core in the mix, and they certainly know how to mesh the texture & dynamics to create a stark caterwaul of anguish whether they are doomin' it up, getting' melodic with it, spacin' out, or thrashin' their tits off!

A great bill would have been these dudes & the sadly-missed Cursed - maybe that happened, who knows?
Ignore the poorly-rendered new-jack tattoo artist covert art & let 'er rip - this one is unique & stands on its own in a genre that I find hard to back much of the time the older I get.

COALESCE.

OX is my pick for Record of the Year.

DON'T call it a comeback!!!

Anyways, because I care so deeply about all three of you who frequent my blog /share some of my taste(s), I went ahead and ripped/EQ'd/made cover art for these recently-aired BBC sessions.
Excellent sound, tight musicianship, fierce attack - it's COALESCE.

Enjoy these; maybe the band will release them at some point?
Who knows...

In the meantime, here's a (as the late John Peel would say) "shit-hot" fuckin' gem from them (via me) to you.

DOUGHNUTS.

Sweden.
The home of high-tech cellphones, extremely safe automobiles, assemble-it-yourself modular furniture, beautiful hockey and tennis stars, designer vodka, tasty meatballs, rippin' death metal & Abba.

Did I forget anything?

Oh yes...

Back in the early-to-mid Nineties, Sweden was home to an all-female vegan/sXe hardcore band from Umea that released a few records on Victory that pretty much flew under the radar - quite possibly due to their political stance. That, as well as the fact that the meathead sXe HC scene (associated with that label at the time) found the all-girl lineup somewhat a novelty - too bad, as these ladies put their own honest and unique twist (especially vocal-wise) on their output.
They were quite dark & melodic in their appraoch with lots of chugga-chugga/pick-squeals/breakdowns, etc.

While this may be a bit of a stretch for some of you, I find their entire catalog compelling & highly enjoyable, even 10+ years later.
I am also still intrigued by the history of this band - especially for what they accomplished in such a misogynistic scene back in the day...

BURIED ALIVE.

The best of the Buffalo Hardcore scene in my opinion.

Terror is just an "okay" band by comparison with what Scott Vogel did back in the day, but then again I rarely listen to much of the whole new-or-old school moshcore stuff.

All in all, the entire catalog released by these guys is solid.

Buried Alive - The Death of Your Perfect World

Comments would be nice - it's been like a fucking ghost town around here lately, fuck.

Solid "new school-ish" hardcore from Houston TX.

Goes great alongside that kick-ass (final) Modern Life Is War CD (R.i.P.)...

TRAP THEM.

I just recorded this live off the web from the WNYU feed as it was goin' down - even made some cover art for you!

While I see them more as "Entombed for the kids who missed Entombed the first time around", there's no denying that they do what they do quite well. I've heard the new record just once so far all the way through, but I have a feeling it will grow on me a bit more soon enough.

No doubt you too will be hearing more about these guys; hopefully bands "on this level" will start wiping out all the ghey-ass post-rock pseudo metal bands around these days that make me wanna puke...

FORCE.

A classic in the annals of Japanese grind/metal, Force fucking kicked much ass.
(It doesn't hurt when when you have Hellchild on your "rock resume" either).

Did the Howling Bull label ever put out any bad records?
(The correct answer is NO).

I miss the Howling Bull store that was here in S.F. on Valencia St. for a few years.
Fuck, I spent sooo much $$$ on this kind of shit, as well as Japanese comix, wrestling crap, toys, etc. Alas, the "gentrification" of The Mission District came into being, effectively killing off "the scene".
Nowadays, all you see is a bunch of PUSSIES on their fucking ghey-ass fixed gear technicolor 2-wheeled fashion accessories, sporting some ironic little puberty 'stache, & hanging out on "fixie field" in Dolores Park w/ their pudgy sloppily-dressed girlfriends w/ those awful giant white sunglasses. Bitches!

I'll shut the fuck up about "the good 'ol days" now, but I'm tellin' you - it used to punk as fuck here, bro...

Somebody hook me up with some MULTIPLEX, already, damn!

WILL HAVEN.

How the fuck do I describe this record other than " I dig this"?

Late last night I decided to go through some old stacks of CD's down in the garage and found this little gem that I was pretty obsessed with about six years ago.
Things were a bit different then - I wasn't a parent yet - and I used to be able to blast tunes & stay up *ahem* "partying" until early the next morning.

This CD was in heavy rotation on most days/nights.

Them days is gone, but the soundtrack to those years remains, and this still sounds good to me.

Lots of fat riffs drilled into the ground, creating a heavy groove w/o quite being hardcore, metalcore, stoner rock, or (ugh) "nu-metal".
This CD is perfect for a late night solo drive through bad weather on a stretch of unfamiliar road - maybe that should have been my entire description for this, huh? - anyways, Sacramento, CA's Will Haven broke up for a few years, then got back together a year or two ago & released a new record but honestly? That record ain't so hot.

Enjoy this shining moment.

MÖRSER.

Two vocalists (at one point they had three), two guitarists, & two bassists round out this tight and brutal-as-fuck German metal machine.
This goes out by request for faithful reader Sueleiman.
Enjoy!

BLOODLET.

I scored this last week while in Chicago for $3.99.

HELLCHILD.

I think most of us agree that the Japanese create some of the best bands of the metal and hardcore genres. Well, Hellchild was one of the best at melding hardcore and brutal metal together creating something you can't label death metal or metalcore.
Masters for sure, and I miss the fuck out of this band - you do too, right?

Hellchild - Where the Conflict Reaches

Now playing: D.V.C. - Licentious Abandon

GEHENNA.

Here's a collection of early material from the controversial / heavy-handed / metallic hardcore onslaught from San Diego known as Gehenna.

Good shit for your Sunday morning...

MÖRSER.

Some tasty grindcore you today, here's the first album from Germany's Mörser who just so happen to have not one but FOUR different vocalists at any given time! Some hot metallic / deathy leads thrown in and as an American the lyrics sound even more brutal in German.

Mörser - Two Hours To Doom

BLOODLET.

Recently dug this one up from a box in my garage; forgot how fucking good metalcore was before they called it metalcore. Saw these dudes with 108 and the mighty Coalesce way the fuck back in the day.
Still one of the best shows I ever attended. Great fucking record!

CURL UP & DIE.

The final release from these Las Vegas practitioners of precise math/metalcore.
Sad to see the end come for these guys so soon as they were just starting to hit their stride.
Tight musicianship with lots of stop-and-go / noisy / heavy riffage going down.

From the ashes of the legendary Nasum comes Coldworker.
While it may not be grinding all the time, it still has that manic element at the forefront but with some metalcore/death metal brutality added to the mix.
A rather enjoyable listen...
