ASSÜCK.

Without a doubt, this record is 15 minutes of serenity - to these ears at least.

Assück melded the best of both worlds - grindcore & death metal - like no other.

There are no weak spots on this "album" - other than it only being 15 minutes long - but then again, this is all killer w/ no filler. Insane musicianship abounds here - shit, these guys would be killer in any genre w/ the chops they possess - but just because they are masters of their instruments doesn't mean they can't write sick riffs.

This record is a testimonial to the musical supremacy that these heavyweights from Florida possesssed. Essential!

Yes, the blog is still active - not so frequent I KNOW, but unlike so many other blogs, I AM NOT GOING ANYWHERE. November has been a crazy month here in SF (Giants World Series Win, Halloween, hangovers, work, real life, a Presidential election, more holidaze coming up, etc). Let's party!

DEATH.

One of my all-time favorite technical metal albums, Human is a landmark in the genre.

Chuck Schuldiner was an entity unto himself. Completely unique in style and tone, he always had great lineups for whatever flavor he was gonna throw at you next, and on top of it all, he was a normal fuckin' dude. One that had no heirs about him, no macho bullshit steez - just sick fuckin' licks that most folks still can't fathom...

Let your mind soak up this groundbreaking piece of work.

(Sorry for the lack of updates recently.
It's been a rough one for me, the past two weeks.
I lost a good friend - a brother, basically - who succumbed to a brain tumor.
He battled & beat two bouts w/ brain cancer already in the last 10 years, but the third one took him out - 2 days before he would have been 34 years old).

THERE IS NO GOD.

Gladly, Black Sabbath has helped me keep my sanity, as well as cold beers w/ good friends, late nights of personal writing & reflection, a good woman, a loving son, & a loyal dog by my side. This record has been critical in my personal struggle for finding some closure on this fucked-up situation).

FUCK YOU, CANCER.

This post is dedicated to my tight homie, WISP. Godspeed to you, my brother. Thanks for the good times. R.I.P.

DISINCARNATE.

Just to re-state the obvious...

James Murphy is (a goD), and one of the founding fathers of classic Florida Death Metal as far as guitarists go.
Stints in Death & Obituary (amongst others) proves his legacy.

On this here beast of a record, Mr. Murphy played everything except drums.
He didn't sing either, but his six-string efforts certainly do.
James drives the tempo & atmosphere of each song with tasteful & memorable riffs that are still unique to this day.

If you haven't heard this, now is the time to be blown away.
If you are familiar, re-aqcuaint yourself with the mastery of Mr. Murphy's PURE death metal guitarwork...

MORBID ANGEL.

The "unreleased" first album from these Florida death icons.

While this isn't "the classic lineup", it could very well be my favorite overall release by them. Mike Browning's vocals on this thing are killer - no offense, Mr. Vincent - but the frosty bark with which he spews forth Necromicon-inspired verbage certainly stand on their own, and Trey's riffs are nothing short of stellar chaotic LAVA from outer space (as per the usual)...

SOLSTICE.

A while back I posted a ripper from Anger, which just so happened to be the hardcore band that Dennis Munoz (guitar) & Alex Marquez (drums) played in after Solstice broke up the first time. They have since reformed three times, and a new record is due to drop any day now.

Solstice play a brand of technically-sound thrashy death, and of course it has that trademark "Florida Death" feel to it. Marquez & Munoz are favorite players of mine, and I'm a sucker for their recorded output - you should be, too.

ANGER.

A long-lost-in-my-garage recent unearthing, The Magic City's Anger was a fertile amalgamation of the upstate NY sXe thug-core sound with the brutality of classic Floridian Death Metal - the final element coming from the hands & feet of Mr.Alex Marquez, formerly of Malevolent Creation & Demolition Hammer (among others).

I'm pretty sure not alot of people have listened to this; check it out as it may surprise you - a lost classic from my collection for sure...

Anger - Miami, FL

(It is suspect at best to think that the band photo above is actually of THIS Anger, but if you think about it, HOW SICK DOES THAT LINEUP LOOK, HUH)?

BLOODLET.

I scored this last week while in Chicago for $3.99.
"The Seraphim Fall" is the third release from these Central Florida "evilcore" stalwarts...

FAILURE FACE.

Do you like real "meat-and-potatoes" styled hardcore?
If your answer is "yes", then you'll probably dig the utterly bombastic chaotic thrash of the infamous Failure Face.
While Brandon, FL may not have been a major player in the hardcore scene, it did spawn a real motherfucker of a band back in the 90's.
Here's a choice collection of their output for your enjoyment.

By request for 'ol Fred the Mindgrinder, here's some catchy 90's Floridian-in-origin sludgeness for you all...

(Much better than Torche).

PALATKA.

Rob asked for some Palatka, so I searched around and found this collection in a few different places.
I think it's only missing one EP, but I'm not sure as I was late to getting into these guys. All in all, pretty good "emo-violence", and if anybody wants to chime in with some background info I wouldn't mind the history lesson as there sure ain't much in the way of web presence of these Floridian rippers...

Now playing: R.A. The Rugged Man - Dumb

CYNIC.

My homie Jebus Zombiechrist was asking for "Focus" by Cynic, but it's not too hard to find it around the 'ol webernet, so I figured I throw up not one but THREE different demos of the legendary-and-underrated tech/death metal masters.

D/L 3 Demos by CYNIC right here.
