Ancient Civilizations on Greek stamp

Ancient Civilizations Forum - Athens 2017

On 5th May I put a query for the Readers of Rainbow Stamp Club to find out The symbol representing Ancient Indian  Civilization. It was  quite a difficult question. I received response from the Readers but only one could answer correctly.

It is none other but the distinguished reader of this Blog and Rainbow Stamp News Mr M. Mahadev of Navi Mumbai. Many Many Congratulations !! Here is the full answer by Mr Mahdev.

The list of symbols, the civilization depicted on the souvenir sheet and the countries they represent is as follows (anticlockwise):

Symbol                                                     Country

1. Great wall of China (Qin Dynasty)        China

2. Sphinx (Pharaoh)                                  Egypt

3.  Pyramid (Mayan)                                  Mexico

4. Two Birds (Indus valley painting)           India

5. Parthenon - Acropolis, Athens              Greece

6. Inca God                                                Peru, Bolivia

7. Colosseum, Rome                                 Italy

8. Winged lion (Persia)                              Iran

9. Ziggurat (Mesopotamia)                        Iraq

Thus in all 9 symbols representing the civilizations which fall in the above 10 countries.

The "Two Feeding  Birds" symbol on the stamp has been taken from Harappa Pottery  ( Terracotta Vessel with painted polychrome design of geometric panels, two flying Birds and two feeding Birds.) representing Indus Valley Civilization.

The designs of the two stamps from Greece combine the ancient and the modern Olympics.
These stamps were issued July 7. In announcing them, Hellenic Post said, “With their sights set on Rio and their hearts never forgetting the roots of the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece, the Greek Olympic Team will compete with passion, honouring their country’s history and proving once again that Greek sport is the best and worthiest ambassador of Greece internationally.”
In addition to silhouettes of modern athletes and skylines, the stamp designs include images of sculptures.
Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer statue appears on both stamp designs, and the ancient Greek statue known as the Artemision bronze is shown on the 0.80 denomination, and the marble Winged Victory of Samothrace on the 0.90.

Asiago International Awards for Philatelic Art

image

On July 17th, the 41st Asiago International Awards were held. UNPA  won the Best Stamp of 2010 award for 2 event sheets about human trafficking and the fight against child labour.

image

At the ceremony for the forty-first Asiago International Awards for Philatelic Art, held in Italy on 17 July, UNPA received the prize for "best stamps in the world" for 2010. The winning stamp sheets highlighted "Human Trafficking - Blue Heart Campaign (UNODC)"  by UNPA Vienna and "Against Child Labour (ILO and Geneva World)" by UNPA Geneva.

UNPA Vienna issued a special stamp sheet on the theme "human trafficking" on 5 February 2010. The Blue Heart Campaign is an awareness-raising initiative developed by UNODC to fight human trafficking and its impact on society. The campaign aims to inspire decision makers to effect change, as well as to encourage the involvement of all areas of society to help stop this crime. The campaign allows people to show solidarity with the victims of human trafficking by wearing the blue heart as an international symbol against this crime. The blue heart represents the sadness of those who are trafficked while reminding us of the cold-heartedness of those who buy and sell fellow human beings.

On 2 September 2010, UNPA Geneva issued a stamp sheet on the theme "child labour". The drawings featured on the stamps show the grim realities of exploited young people. The selected images are part of "Children's Views of Child Labour", a vast initiative promoted in 2009 by GenevaWorld in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and with the support of local volunteers to mark the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the ILO Convention concerning the Prohibition and Immediate Action for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour.

The prize is given annually under the patronage of the President of Italy. The organizing Italian stamp collectors club, Sette Comuni, is one of the most well-known and respected stamp collectors clubs in Europe.

New Europa 2011 stamps..

vat

Date of Issue : 21 June 2011

The  new Europa 2011 issue from Vatican City consists of two stamps presented as a diptych showing a detail of a Sistine Chapel painting by Perugino, The Journey of Moses into Egypt.

The United Nations declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests. Forests cover more than 30% of the earth's surface and represent a vital source of biological diversity. They also play a key role in mitigating the effects of climate change, a concern widely discussed today. Forests are of great importance in regulating the earth's climate, and they play a key role in the water cycle and oxygenation of the planet. Forests provide wood and fuel, they host an enormous variety of living animal and plant species, and they counter soil erosion. Given their vitally important role for the planet, it is necessary to safeguard and protect them.

The biological, ecological and climatic role of forests is invaluable for the life on Earth. The loss of forests means the loss of biological diversity and climate change.

The clearing of forests and a non-simultaneous afforestation have been hurt earlier cultures. But mankind has apparently not learned much from it: the reckless deforestation in tropical rain forest, the rigorous cases of cutting down of ancient trees without quick replacement have already led to noticeable changes in the flora, fauna and climate. That is why afforestation is one of the biggest global challenges.
