50th Anniversary Of The Patenting Of The Rubik’s Cube

The Rubik’s Cube

Date of Issue : 30 January 2025

Here is a beautiful Souvenir sheet issued by Magyar Posta to commemorate the  celebration of the 50th anniversary of the patenting of the Rubik’s Cube® with a stamp issue. The puzzle made its international debut at the toy fairs of London, Paris, Nuremberg, and New York in January and February 1980. In the 80's and 90'sthis puzzle was a craze among people of all age groups. Even today it is popular and can be seen on Toy shops.

The Rubik’s Cube®, or Magic Cube as it was originally called, was invented by the architect, interior designer, designer, toy designer, and Kossuth and State Prize-winning Hungarian sculptor Ernő Rubik Jr. An honorary professor, he was awarded the title of Artist of the Nation and is a member of the European Academy of Sciences. An expert on innovation and creativity at international level, his toys were inspired by a child-like inquisitiveness and imaginativeness. As a designer, he created many logic toys and his most famous invention, the Rubik’s Cube®, is a captivating puzzle. Rubik applied for a patent for the Cube on 30 January 1975, which was granted on 31 December 1977. Success came soon after. It is not a simple game, but takes the cuber straight towards human creativity. The Cube activates in everyone skills such as concentration, curiosity, playfulness and the desire to find the solution. The Rubik’s Cube® became a global craze. It has appeared frequently in books, plays and Hollywood blockbusters, has been the subject of university courses and is used as a piece of sporting equipment at world speed solving competitions. Over its past of almost half a century, it has become the game of a billion people.

The stamp design of the numbered souvenir sheet issued by Magyar Posta shows a scrambled Rubik’s Cube®, while the squares and rectangles forming the frame are in the colours of the Cube. The special first day cover features an image of the so-called Retro Rubik’s Cube®. The Hungarian version of the official logo for the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Rubik’s Cube® (50 Years of the Rubik’s Cube®) appears on the souvenir sheet, the first day cover and the imprint of the postmark on the cover.

Rubik's invention

In the mid-1970s, Ernő Rubik worked at the Department of Interior Design at the Academy of Applied Arts and Crafts in Budapest.Although it is widely reported that the Cube was built as a teaching tool to help his students understand 3D objects, his actual purpose was solving the structural problem of moving the parts independently without the entire mechanism falling apart. He did not realise that he had created a puzzle until the first time he scrambled his new Cube and then tried to restore it.Rubik applied for a patent in Hungary for his "Magic Cube" (Hungarian: bűvös kocka) on 30 January 1975,and HU170062 was granted later that year.

The first test batches of the Magic Cube were produced in late 1977 and released in toy shops in Budapest. Magic Cube was held together with interlocking plastic pieces that prevented the puzzle from being easily pulled apart, unlike the magnets in Nichols's design. With Ernő Rubik's permission, businessman Tibor Laczi took a Cube to Germany's Nuremberg Toy Fair in February 1979 in an attempt to popularise it. It was noticed by Seven Towns founder Tom Kremer, and they signed a deal with Ideal Toys in September 1979 to release the Magic Cube worldwide. Ideal wanted at least a recognisable name to trademark; that arrangement put Rubik in the spotlight because the Magic Cube was renamed after its inventor in 1980.

The puzzle made its international debut at the toy fairs of London, Paris, Nuremberg, and New York in January and February 1980.

After its international debut, the progress of the Cube towards the toy shop shelves of the West was briefly halted so that it could be manufactured to Western safety and packaging specifications. A lighter Cube was produced, and Ideal decided to rename it. "The Gordian Knot" and "Inca Gold" were considered, but the company finally decided on "Rubik's Cube", and the first batch was exported from Hungary in May 1980.

The packaging had a few variations depending on the country, most popular being a clear plastic cylinder but cardboard versions were also used. The cube itself had slightly different variations in the order of the colours (Western vs. Japanese colour scheme where blue/yellow are switched) and some of the cubes did not have a white piece logo.

1980s Cube craze

After the first batches of Rubik's Cubes were released in May 1980, initial sales were modest, but Ideal began a television advertising campaign in the middle of the year which it supplemented with newspaper advertisements. At the end of 1980, Rubik's Cube won a German Game of the Year special award and won similar awards for best toy in the UK, France, and the US By 1981, Rubik's Cube had become a craze, and it is estimated that in the period from 1980 to 1983 around 200 million Rubik's Cubes were sold worldwide.[ In March 1981, a speedcubing championship organised by the Guinness Book of World Records was held in Munich, and a Rubik's Cube was depicted on the front cover of Scientific American that same month. In June 1981, The Washington Post reported that Rubik's Cube is "a puzzle that's moving like fast food right now ... this year's Hoola Hoop or Bongo Board",and by September 1981, New Scientist noted that the cube had "captivated the attention of children of ages from 7 to 70 all over the world this summer."

As most people could solve only one or two sides, numerous books were published including David Singmaster's Notes on Rubik's "Magic Cube" (1980) and Patrick Bossert's You Can Do the Cube (1981). At one stage in 1981, three of the top ten best selling books in the US were books on solving Rubik's Cube, and the best-selling book of 1981 was James G. Nourse's The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube which sold over 6 million copies. In 1981, the Museum of Modern Art in New York exhibited a Rubik's Cube, and at the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee a six-foot Cube was put on display. ABC Television even developed a cartoon show called Rubik, the Amazing Cube.In June 1982, the First Rubik's Cube World Championship took place in Budapest and would become the only competition recognized as official until the championship was revived in 2003.

In October 1982, The New York Times reported that sales had fallen and that "the craze has died",and by 1983 it was clear that sales had plummeted. However, in some countries such as China and the USSR, the craze had started later and demand was still high because of a shortage of Cubes.

World of Dinosaurs

Date of Issue : 3 September 2018

THE WORLD OF THE BAKONY DINOSAURS

Magyar Posta  issued a miniature sheet about the world of dinosaurs, once the rulers of the Earth’s biosphere. This miniature sheet takes us back 85 million years in the history of the Earth right to the Late Cretaceous epoch. In these prehistoric times our planet looked entirely different. The continents had different shapes, the climate was not the same, and the plants and animals inhabiting the land and the seas were most unlike today’s flora and fauna. People did not live yet, so no drawing or photograph could be made of these creatures and everything that we know about these animals is based on the scientific study of fossils found in rocks.
Every geological period has its characteristic organisms. In the epoch visited with the stamps, dinosaurs and their close relatives were the dominant animals. The word dinosaur means fearfully great or terrible lizard or reptile. When in the middle of the 19th century scientists started using this name, they knew far less than we do today as this expression is not entirely accurate. Some of these beings were in fact giant animals with a frightening appearance, which caught the imagination of many people, but most of them were the size of a human or smaller, so not all were terrible. Not to mention the fact that dinosaurs are only distant relations of today’s lizards. They are much closer to today’s birds, which their similar habits of making a nest among other things suggest.
The miniature sheet presents a few of the dinosaurs and ancient reptiles together with their habitat whose fossils have been found in the Bakony hills in Hungary. The top row of the miniature sheet of six different stamps consists of the quadrupedal herbivorous Ajkaceratopskozmai, the small, at most turkey-sized, probably pack-hunting Pneumatoraptorfodori, and the dragon of the Bakony, the omnivorous flying reptile with a wingspan of about 3.5 to 4 metres named Bakonydracogalaczi. In the bottom row, the 4 to 4.5 metre long, quadrupedal herbivorous armoured dinosaur Hungarosaurustormai, the at most 1 metre long short-nosed Iharkutosuchusmakadii, which taxonomically can be placed among modern crocodiles, and the aquatic apex predator at the time, a mosasaurus that adapted to a freshwater environment, Pannoniasaurusinexpectatus, can be seen. The special postmark shows the beak of the 1.5 metre long, herbivorous Ajkaceratopskozmai with a small horn and characteristic parrot-like bill.
Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for 175 million years before all their species went extinct, except for birds, 66 million years ago. Between their disappearance and the appearance of man, over three hundred times as much time passed than between the appearance of man and the present day. Apart from scientific works, they are the subject of many books, films and games, and they continue to be as popular as ever.

100 Years of Lions International

Date of Issue : 3 April 2017

Lions Clubs International Celebrates 100 Years of Service

Magyar Posta  issued a  commemorative stamp to welcome the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Lions Clubs International.

Lions Clubs International was founded in 1917 by the then 38-year-old Chicago businessman Melvin Jones with the determination to carry out - in addition to the basic activities of the local business club - goodwill work for the community and for the whole world. The initiative was accepted by Melvin Jones' group, the Business Club of Chicago. Having established contact with similar groups, the Association of Lions Clubs was founded in the United States in the same year. It became international in 1920 with the foundation of the first similar Canadian club.

In the one hundred years since its foundation, as a result of the goodwill work carried out and the related noble idea, the Lions movement today is active in 206 countries with 46,000 clubs and with approximately 1.4 million members, hence is the world's largest goodwill organisation organized as a club. Lions’ motto is ‘We serve’.

In the 100th year of its foundation, the Association’s support activities are organised around four objectives: the first is to provide support to young people and involve them in the Lions projects, that is, the promotion of the goodwill work among the youth in the Leo clubs, whereby they get involved in the Lions’ actions. The second objective is the struggle for the preservation of eyesight which includes support for both the blind and the visually impaired. The third objective is fight against starvation, which means the development of access to healthy food as well. The fourth objective is the protection of the environment and creating a healthier, more livable environment for all communities.

According to a research carried out in 2007 by the Financial Times, an American daily newspaper, from among 34 international goodwill non-governmental organisations the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) received the honorary title of the best NGO in the world. The reason the LCIF was awarded this honorary title is, among others, that it grants the total amount of the donations collected for the goodwill, i.e. 100%, to the needy.

Currently, in the 40 clubs located in Hungary approximately 900 members are working for the community, and their service covers all areas of support. The centennial motto of the 100-year-old international organisation is: ‘Where people are in need, the Lions are there to help’.

Easter 2017

Date of Issue : 6 March 2017

Here is a new stamp from Hungary. In line with its tradition, Magyar Posta is celebrating Easter, the largest feast of Christianity, by issuing a postage stamp. The stamp and the special envelope reveal the artwork - and a detail of the artwork - entitled Christ's sepulchral shroud, created by artist and textile artist Erzsébet Szekeres.

Easter is the feast of celebrating Jesus' death and resurrection, mankind's redemption. According to the Bible, Jesus Christ was crucified on a Friday, and his resurrection happened on the third day, a Sunday. With his death on the cross, he redeemed the sins of every man, and his resurrection was a victory over death. In 2017, both the Eastern and the Western churches will celebrate Easter on the same day, April 16.

New Easter Stamp

Date of Issue : 4 March 2016
Easter is celebrated around the world in a surprising variety of ways – with traditions like chocolate bunnies, wooden rattles, cod fish, and bonfires. In keeping with its traditions, Magyar Posta is celebrating Easter by issuing a definitive postage stamp. At the centre of the spring-welcoming, trailing floral, calligraphic design of the stamp is the Hungarian word for Easter “Húsvét”.

Easter is pre-eminent among high days and holidays as it both welcomes the arrival of spring and is the celebration of the resurrection of Christ in the Christian world. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds laid their clothes and palm branches on the ground to welcome the Saviour, and today in Hungarian churches branches of pussy willow are blessed in remembrance of this.
The lambis another ancient symbol of Easter whose origin is also to be found in the Bible. Yet the Easter lamb is closely associated with the awakening of nature as this is the lambing season bringing new life to the world.
When Lent ends, winter also comes to a close, thus Easter is also a celebration of the rebirth of nature. As the days grow warmer, nature awakes. The first flowers push through the ground and soon the boughs of the trees are covered in blossom, bidding farewell to the bareness of winter as verdure returns to the world. The decoration of churches with flowers and branches on the Holy Saturday morning for Easter likewise symbolises the rebirth of nature.

100 years of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity

image

Date of Issue : 7 September 2015

Magyar Posta celebrates  100 years since the creation of theory of relativity by the genius of all times Albert Einstein. One hundred years ago Albert Einstein presented his new relativistic gravitational field equations to the Prussian Academy of Sciences at its meeting on 25 November 1915, and thus his general theory of relativity was born. Since then, this theory not only has proved to be of great significance in physics, but it also has astrophysical, technical and everyday applications. Magyar Posta issued a stamp on 7th March to mark this centenary.

image

A portrait of Albert Einstein, the Noble Prize-winning physicist, and the mathematical formula of the general theory of relativity appear in the stamp design. The First Day Cancellation features Einstein’s signature.

The general theory of relativity is the theory of gravitation published by Albert Einstein in 1916. Its basis is the equivalence principle, which describes gravitation and acceleration as two ways of seeing the same thing. The theory rests on the fact that, locally, no experiment can make a distinction between the homogeneous gravitational field and constant acceleration.

Einstein gradually expanded the meaning of the equivalence principle in his further writings and later included the idea that no physical measurement can establish the state of motion of a non-accelerating reference system. This means that it is impossible to measure, and thus in effect pointless to discuss, the changes in the inertial mass or electrical charges of the basic physical constants such as elementary particles in the case of different relative motions. Every measured change in these constants is either an experimental error or shows that the theory of relativity is wrong or wanting.

New stamp on UNICEF

image

Date of Issue  : 5 February 2015

Here is a beautiful stamp issued on UNICEF. The design of the stamp is excellent.  Magyar Posta has issued a special stamp to welcome UNICEF operating in Hungary for forty years. On the stamp design a graphic work entitled “Children’s Tree” can be seen, while on the first day cover the main aims of UNICEF are displayed. The stamp was released on 5 February 2015.

image

In the history of mankind World War II was the greatest armed conflict, in which 70 nations took part and more than 62 million civilians and soldiers died. Among the survivors there were millions of orphaned and severely traumatised children. In that world the victorious and the defeated both were in need of support.

Maurice Pate – who later became the first Executive Director of UNICEF – wrote the following to the US Secretary of State in his letter: “I need 100 million dollars to give 6 million children a glass of milk and a piece of bread.” UNICEF was launched with this sentence. Its aim was to help freezing, starving and sick children, including Hungarian children, in post-war Europe.

However, following foundation they had to face the fact that it is not only wars that cause pain to children. All children in the world must receive the fundamental rights they are entitled to: the right to protection, health, education and equality. In 1965 UNICEF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “the promotion of brotherhood among the nations”. UNICEF fights for these rights in Hungary as well.

According to global surveys there are between 500 million and 1.5 billion children who have suffered from some sort of violence. According to some estimates every tenth child is affected by violence in Hungary. UNICEF believes that child abuse could be prevented completely, and all children exposed to danger have the right to protection and must be given appropriate assistance. UNICEF launches campaigns in Hungary to help both adults and children understand children’s rights.

Threatened Pataxo Indian Tribe of Brazil Celebrates Supreme Court Decision

image

The Pataxo Ha-Ha-Hae Indian tribe, residing in Brazil, has been allowed by a Supreme Court verdict to live undisturbed in their area. The court has asked the ranchers illegally occupying the area and their indigenous territory to leave the region.

The decision by Brazil's Supreme Court came after a long judicial battle, the Survival International organisation informed. For decades, the Pataxo of Bahia state has been subjected to violent conflict by the ranchers and other poachers illegally occupying the area.

They have been pushing to be able to live undisturbed on their ancestral land, a right guaranteed to them by Brazil's constitution and by international law. According to Survival International, State Deputy Padre Ton emphasised that this land is for the Indians, "chased away and evicted by the violence they suffered".

The history of the colonisation of Bahia's southern region is a tragic tale of tremendous violence exerted against the Indian inhabitants.Time and again the indigenous groups residing in the region have been subjected to threats, affronts, challenges and aggressions of hired thugs.

New stamps on Year of Horse….

image image

Here is new  stamp  on the Year of the Horse from Serbia. The first stamp shown above is one of the best stamps on year of horse stamps issued so far. The design is exquisite.

The year 2014, as the Year of the Horse covers the period from 31st January 2014 to 28th February 2015. The 2014. is the Year of the Wood Horse. The last Year of the Horse was in 1954 as the repetition cycle of the same combination of sign and element occurs every 60 years. The Year of the Horse occurs every 12 years but the Year of the Wood Horse every 60 years.

That’s why all the people born in 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 should work on what they really want, because in 2014 it will be easier to accomplish than usual.

General characteristics of people born under the sign of the Horse are: activity, energy, independence, freedom loving, have style and good taste, give all for love. Patience is not their strong suit. He wants to wildly gallop towards the obstacles, without looking neither left nor right. The Wood Horse is as volatile as the other Horse, but it has better control, and better sense of discipline and is ready for reasonable discussion.
