National Doctor's Day

Date of Issue :1 July 1982

National Doctor’s Day 2025: Observed on July 1, the day honours doctors in India for their dedication and sacrifice ,Doctor's Day in India was established in 1991 by the Government of India to honour Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, an esteemed physician and a pioneer in public healthcare. Dr Roy, who also served as the second chief minister of West Bengal and was awarded the Bharat Ratna, was born on July 1, 1882, and passed away on the same day in 1962.

A special cover was released  on 7 March 2025 by Governor, Uttrakhand on the inauguartion of Flower Show ( Spring Festival 2025) at Raj Bhawan, Dehradun. The cover features Jatamansi, a perennial aromatic herb. It is a medicial plant  and has various uses in making medicine, perfume and preparation of hair tonic.

1 July - National Doctor's Day

National Doctor's Day is celebrated on July 1st every year in India to recognize the contributions of doctors and medical professionals towards society. It also aims to create awareness about the importance of doctors, their selfless service, and the valuable role they play in improving the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

This year's theme for National Doctor's Day is “Celebrating Resilience and Healing Hands". Through this year's theme, we wish to celebrate the medical professionals that worked hard through the difficult times faced due to the pandemic.

National Doctor's Day is celebrated as a tribute in honour of  Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a renowned physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. Dr. Roy was born on July 1, 1882, and he dedicated his life to the medical profession, making significant contributions to the field of healthcare and public health.

A  special cancellation has been issued today by Karnataka Postal Circle of  India Post to mark National Doctor's Day.

Heroes of the Covid Pandemic

 

To be issued on 23 March 2022

Royal Mail will issue a set of 8 stamps to commemorate the Heroes of COVID Pandemic on 23 March 2022. The postcards with the same stamp designs will also be issued.

In Spring 2020, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Royal Mail Chief Executive, Simon Thompson launched a special stamp design competition. School children from across the UK were invited to design a postage stamp featuring their own hero or heroes of the Covid pandemic. The response was unprecedented, with surplus 600,000 children taking part.

With over a world record-breaking 600,000 entries, Royal Mail carefully selected 120 regional finalists. From this, a special panel of judges, including the Prime Minister, picked 24 regional winners. The final eight winning designs, were personally selected by HRH The Prince of Wales, with the finished stamps approved by HM The Queen.

Here are new stamps featuring Covid-19 theme. The stamps show the    fight against biggest  pandemic  of the century  COVID-19 . These stamps salute the frontline warriors of this pandemic.

Moroccan Post issued a special stamp on COVID-19 theme, The revenue from the sale of these stamps will be donated to the Special fund for the COVID – 19.

The stamp issued by China Post shows the front line warriors who worked during the lock down which include Doctors, Police, community workers, scientists and Volunteers.

40th Anniversary of Eradication of Smallpox

The UNPA issued a commemorative stamp on  8th May 2020 to commemorate 40th Anniversary of Eradication of Smallpox.

The World Health Organization commemorated the 40th anniversary of smallpox eradication in December 2019, recognizing the historic moment on 9 December 1979 when the end of smallpox was confirmed to have been eradicated. Five months later, in May 1980, the 33rd World Health Assembly issued its official declaration that ‘the world and all its peoples have won freedom from smallpox’.

A plaque marking the end of a scourge that had afflicted millions for thousands of years was unveiled at WHO headquarters in Geneva in the very same meeting room where, four decades earlier, the 19 members of the Global Commission for the Certification of Smallpox Eradication certified that smallpox had been eradicated from the world.

Until it was wiped out, smallpox had plagued humanity for at least 3000 years, killing 300 million people in the 20th century alone. The last known endemic case of smallpox was reported and the outbreak promptly contained in Somalia in 1977.

The successful smallpox eradication programme yielded vital knowledge and tools for the field of disease surveillance, the benefits of ring vaccination and the importance of health promotion in fighting diseases such as poliomyelitis and the Ebola virus. It also laid the foundation for stronger national immunization programmes worldwide, underpinning the establishment of primary health care in many countries and creating momentum toward Universal Health Coverage.
