Centenary of publication of Einstein‘s theory of relativity

image

Here is a recent stamp from Monaco featuring Einstein with an extraordinary design. The equations of his work could be seen in the background.

Einstein is the person who amazes not only scientists but also the ordinary people from different countries. Philatelists and stamp collectors are looking stamps that commemorate this great genius too. This year Postal Authorities celebrate the centenary of publication of Einstein‘s works on general relativity, and Monaco Post is not an exception.

In 1915, Einstein published his theory on gravitation, known as general relativity, which superseded Newton’s theory. However, despite convincing experimental confirmation, the theory of general relativity had to spend a period in the wilderness: it was only in 1960 that scientists recognized the true significance of the theory and grasped the revolutionary developments it represented.

First Crossword Puzzle on stamp..

image

Date of Issue : 9 October 2013

Monaco post issued a stamp to commemorate the centenary of the first crossword puzzle. Crossword Puzzle is a favourite pastime of many . Most  of the people might have tried it at least once in a life time.

image

It was Arthur Albert Wynne, a British journalist specializing in puzzles, who had the idea of including the black squares in traditional word squares and adding definitions. When the English newspapers turned down his puzzle, he sent the proposal to an American newspaper. The first crossword was published on 21st December 1913 in the New York Worlds Sunday supplement, Fun and met with immediate success.

image

A crossword is a word puzzle that normally takes the form of a square or a rectangular grid of white and black shaded squares. The goal is to fill the white squares with letters, forming words or phrases, by solving clues which lead to the answers. In languages that are written left-to-right, the answer words and phrases are placed in the grid from left to right and from top to bottom. The shaded squares are used to separate the words or phrases.

50th anniversary of the August 28, 1963, March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom!

With this 2013 stamp, the U.S. Postal Service commemorates the 50th anniversary of the August 28, 1963, March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The highlight of the event — in which some 250,000 people participated — was the powerful “I Have a Dream” speech that Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

The stamp art shows marchers against the background of the Washington Monument, with placards calling for equal rights and jobs for all. Using broad strokes and painting in oil on gessoed illustration board, the artist conveys an impressionistic effect of the historic occasion. The 1963 March on Washington stamp is the last of three stamps being issued in 2013 in a civil rights set. The first in the set commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, and the second commemorated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Rosa Parks. An inspiring word appears in large type in the selvage of each sheet: “Freedom,” for the Emancipation Proclamation; “Courage,” for Rosa Parks; “Equality,” for The 1963 March on Washington.

The March on Washington was a milestone in the civil rights movement. King called it “the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.” Bayard Rustin, the main organizer of the event, observed, “What made the march was that black people voted that day with their feet.” It gave African Americans “an identity which is a part of the national struggle in this country for the extension of democracy.”

Less than a year after the march, Congress passed and President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which desegregated public institutions and outlawed job discrimination. Soon thereafter the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which provided for federal oversight of voting rights in the South, became the law of the land.

The 1963 March on Washington stamp has been issued as a Forever® stamp. Forever stamps are  equal in value to the current First-Class Mail® one-ounce rate.

Weasel on a new Estonian stamp

Eesti Post issued a stamp depicting weasel (Mustelanivalis), a representative of Estonian fauna.

The tail of the weasel, brownish on the back and white on the belly in the summer, is slightly shorter than that of the other small carnivore, the ermine, and the hair at the end of its tail is never black. In the winter, the weasel turns white all over. Weasels live everywhere where they can hide and where there is prey, from sand dunes to grasslands to forests and hills. They are active round the clock.

The tracks mostly come in pairs, and the track of the tail is noticeably only seldom. The weasel likes to sometimes stand up and observe the neighbourhood. When disturbed it hisses or trills at a high pitch. It expresses fear by means of sharp yelping. The weasel is so small (body length 15 to 20 cm) that it can follow rodents into their nests. It mainly catches and eats microta and mice, but does not refuse birds and eggs either.
