New stamps on Scouting
The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) in partnership with the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) launched on Saturday, 30 August 2014 commemorative stamps in celebration of the 100 years of scouting in the Philippines.
Date of Issue : 30 August 2014
PHLPost Chairman Cesar N. Sarino presented the stamps in the event held at the BSP National Office in Ermita, Manila, attended by Hon. Jejomar C. Binay, BSP President and Roberto M. Pagdanganan, Member Emeritus of the BSP National Executive Board and Chairman of the Centennial Celebration Committee.
About 110,000 copies of the commemorative stamps, in two designs, were printed using imported unwatermarked paper, in PhP10.00 denomination. Also available are souvenir sheets sold at PhP30.00 each.
The first Filipino scouting troop consisting of 26 boys was formed on November 15, 1914. Scouting was officially established in the country as the Philippine Council of the Boy Scouts of the America in 1923. Commonwealth Act. No. 111 created the BSP as a public corporation to promote “the ability of boys to do useful things for themselves and others, to train them in Scoutcraft, and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred virtues, using the methods which are in common use by Boy Scouts.”
Now, 100 years after the first Boy Scout troop was formed, the BSP continues to strive in pursuing its mission – to inculcate in our Scouts love of God, country and fellowmen; to prepare the youth for responsible leadership; and to contribute to nation-building according to the ideals, principles and programs of Scouting.
The stamps feature the logo of the Philippine Scouting, the centennial logo, the “Boy Scout in Action” monument, and the façade of the old and new BSP National Headquarters. Souvenir sheets and official “First Day Covers” are available at the Post Shop, Philately and Museum Division, Manila Central Post Office, Door 203, Liwasang Bonifacio, 1000 Manila and all Regional Offices of PHLPost.

Iceland Post issued a set of two stamps on 13 September featuring Lighthouses.
The Engey lighthouse

In 1902 a small lighthouse was built in Engey, replacing the lantern. In 1937 a concrete lighthouse was erected in the island and was fitted with a 500 mm lens and gaslight equipment. It was powered with electricity in 1963. The lighthouse is a quadrilateral 5,5 m high tower with a 3,5 m high Swedish lantern. Originally the lighthouse was white with a vertical red stripe in the middle of the wall but was later painted yellow.
The Kálfshamar lighthouse
In 1913 a lighthouse was built at Kálfshamarsnes in the northwest of Iceland. It consisted of a Norwegian lantern of cast iron on a concrete plate. A new lighthouse was built at Kálfshamarsnes in 1940. It was taken into use in 1942 and fitted with a 500 mm lens and gaslight equipment. In 1973 it was powered with electricity. The Kálfshamar lighthouse is a concrete quadrilateral tower 16,3 m high on a low foundation. The tower walls have inlaid vertical stripes with a crucifix moulded in the surface over the entrance. The walls are plated with light quartz and the inlaid stripes with obsidian.

150th Anniversary of Akureyri
Date of Issue : 3 May 2012
Akureyri is Iceland's fourth most populous municipality.Akureyri lost its township prerogatives 1836, but regained them in 1862. Farmers in Eyjafjörður established organizations to strengthen their position against the Danish merchants. They founded the KEA cooperative which played a substantial role in the growth of the town of Akureyri, supporting a number of industrial companies in the town, many of which specialized in processing agricultural products.
The Akureyri Park
The Akureyri Park is run by the town as a botanical garden and a nature park. The latter was formally opened to the public in 1912 while the botanic garden opened in 1957. The Park Society was founded in 1909 with Sigridur Sæmundsdóttir as its first president. Margrethe Schiöth contributed to the growth and development of the park for more than thirty years. The Akureyri Embellishment Society promoted the acquisition of a remarkable and unusual botanical collection owned by Jón Rögnvaldsson, a pioneer in the cultivation of plants in Iceland. Now the park contains nearly 7000 foreign species and most of the Icelandic flora.
The Hallargarður park in Reykjavík
The Hallargarður park in Reykjavík, constructed in 1953-4, was designed by Jón H. Björnsson, Iceland´s first trained landscape architect. The park is influenced by American modernism, with curves and constantly changing vistas. It was completed in summer 1954. In 1986 the park was altered and the pond and fountain replaced by shrubs and flowerbeds. There is a monument in the park of the entrepreneur Thor Jensen and his wife, Thorbjorg Jensen. In the uppermost part of the park there is a sculpture “A boy and a girl” by Ásmundur Sveinsson.
Scouting in Iceland 100th Anniversary
Date of Issue : 3 May 2012
Ingvar Ólafsson founded the first scouting patrol in Iceland in 1911 and the first scout meeting was held on July 16th of that year. The first girl scout association was founded in July 1922 with Jakobína Magnúsdóttir as the first group leader. Gertrud Fridriksson, the first group leader of the scouts in Husavik, played a crucial part in the establishment of the association. The Girl Scout Association was founded 23rd March 1939 with a membership of 459. In 1944 the two national associations merged into the current Icelandic Boy and Girl Scout Association.

New stamps on Scouting…
100 Years of Hungarian Scout Association
Date of issue: 20 April 2012
Magyar Posta has issued a commemorative miniature sheet with a surcharge in honour of the centenary of the foundation of the Hungarian Scout Association. The stamp designs of the miniature sheet are graphic compositions related to scouting, the world jamboree, leadership training, the scout salute and the scout symbol.
Magyar Posta devotes the proceeds from the surcharge – HUF 100 for each miniature sheet, which may not be used to pay for postage – to supporting youth stamp collecting.
The first scout camp began on 1 August 1907 on Brownsea Island in the south of England. The movement, founded by Robert Baden-Powell in 1907, appeared in Hungary in 1910. The Hungarian Scout Association was established on 28 December 1912. Hungary was a founder member of the International Scout Bureau (today WOSM) as well as the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, which was established in Parád in 1928. Hungarian scouts first took part in a world jamboree in Copenhagen in 1924, where they came third in the competition behind the British and the Americans.
In 1926 the first Hungarian national jamboree was organised, which was attended by 10,000 people. In 1927 the Association set up a centre for the highest scout training among other activities at Hárshegy. By then the Association also owned a central national building, a sea scout centre on the Danube and a national network of scout shops. In 1933 Hungary organised the 4th World Scout Jamboree in the park of the royal palace in Gödöllő, where 26,000 scouts from 46 countries took part. Between 1948 and 1989 the movement was banned by the government in Hungary, and Hungarian scouting continued either illegally or in emigration. After the change of political system, on 11 February 1989 the Hungarian Scout Association was the very first social organisation to be registered at the Metropolitan Court of Budapest.
At present the Hungarian Scout Association has 10 scout districts. Each district is divided into areas, which operate their own scout groups. Irrespective of geographical area, there are specialised branches of the scout movement, such as the sea scouts and the air scouts, where scouts can learn about their particular interest. The training takes place in small communities called patrols, which are run by young leaders. Several patrols with members of similar age are overseen by an adult. The leaders are given their assignments dependent on different levels of training.
