School Days..

Date of Issue : 17 November 2017

Here is a  beautiful set of stamps of Pro Juventure series    from Swiss Post on the theme of schooldays with a pair of motifs: Learning and playing, or blackboard and playground, that is to say Pythagoras and hopscotch. The two poles of our schooldays, the two areas in which we gather a multitude of experiences that will shape our subsequent lives.

Acquiring knowledge and having fun: both were crucial for our development. Think back to your own childhood. What memories remain unforgettable? How did you fare back then? And how did your colleagues get on? Sure, not everyone had the same opportunities, just like today. And that’s exactly the problem that Pro Juventute is seeking to address – by creating equal opportunities for  young people. The money raised from these annual stamp issues  support projects working in this area.

150th anniversary of the Discovery of the Laws of the Heredity

image

Here is wonderful set of stamps from Portugal. Portugal Post has released a set of stamps to mark the 150th anniversary of the Discovery of the Laws of the Heredity. The design of both the stamps is very nice and appealing.

Mendelian laws of inheritance are statements about the way certain characteristics are transmitted from one generation to another in an organism. The laws were derived by the Austrian monk Gregor Mendel (1822–1884) based on experiments he conducted in the period from about 1857 to 1865. For his experiments, Mendel used ordinary pea plants. Among the traits that Mendel studied were the color of a plant’s flowers, their location on the plant, the shape and color of pea pods, the shape and color of seeds, and the length of plant stems.

Mendel’s approach was to transfer pollen (which contains male sex cells) from the stamen (the male reproductive organ) of one pea plant to the pistil (female reproductive organ) of a second pea plant. As a simple example of this kind of experiment, suppose that one takes pollen from a pea plant with red flowers and uses it to fertilize a pea plant with white flowers. What Mendel wanted to know is what color the flowers would be in the offspring of these two plants.

In the second series of experiments, Mendel studied the changes that occurred in the second generation. That is, suppose two offspring of the red/white mating (“cross”) are themselves mated. What color will the flowers be in this second generation of plants? As a result of these experiments, Mendel was able to state three generalizations about the way characteristics are transmitted from one generation to the next in pea plants.

Special Cover on the occasion Bi-Centenary Birth Celebration of St. Don Bosco released on 16th August 2015

The 200th birth anniversary of St Don Bosco was celebrated at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao on 16th August 2015 with fervour and joy. To celebrate the occasion, the Don Bosco community had organized the programme. A special cover was released on the occasion at the hands of Chief Minister of Goa Shri Laxmikant Parsekar by Postmaster General, Goa Region Shri Vinod kumar Verma (Special Cover approval no. MH/25/2015). Fr Ian Figuerado, provincial of Panjim and Konkan Region, Fr Savio Gomes, principal of Don Bosco College, Panjim; Sister Agatha, Dias vice-Province and Dias vice-Province were also present at the celebration.

St. John Bosco (b. 16 August 1815 – d. 31 January 1888), popularly known as Don Bosco, was an Italian Roman Catholic priest of the Latin Church, educator and writer of the 19th century. While working in Turin, where the population suffered many of the effects of industrialization and urbanization, he dedicated his life to the betterment and education of street children, juvenile delinquents, and other disadvantaged youth. He developed teaching methods based on love rather than punishment, a method that became known as the Salesian Preventive System. A follower of the spirituality and philosophy of Saint Francis de Sales, Bosco dedicated his works to him when he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco, based in Turin. Together with Maria Domenica Mazzarello, he founded the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a religious congregation of nuns dedicated to the care and education of poor girls. In 1876 Bosco founded a movement of laity, the Association of Salesian Cooperators, with the same educational mission to the poor. Don Bosco established a network of organizations and centres to carry on his work. Following his beatification in 1929, he was canonized as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Pius XI in 1934.

Special stamp on Germans’ victory in 2014 FIFA World Cup

image

Germany's football World Cup in 2014 - an impressive success, which is also honored with a special stamp. Germany was so confident it would win the World Cup that it pre-printed a run of five million stamps commemorating its soccer victory before the final game even took place.

image

Just hours after Germany’s victory in Rio de Janeiro, the German Finance Ministry presented a new stamp honoring the new World Cup champions on Monday.

German Finance Ministry spokeswoman Marianne Kothe said of the decision to print the stamps in advance: “We always firmly believed in a success of the German team.”

The 60-cent stamps will go on sale nationwide on Thursday. Commemorative stamps for sporting events have a long tradition in Germany, with recent stamps marking the Olympic Games in London in 2012 and the Women’s World Cup in Germany in 2011.

In Brazil, German players celebrated their World Cup victory late into the night, ahead of their flight back to Berlin for a planned victory lap with the trophy and thousands of fans in Berlin on Tuesday morning.

200th anniversary of Danish School

image

A new stamp from Danish Post marks the Danish school’s 200th anniversary with familiar motifs from the school.

“2014 is an important year for the Danish school system. For 200 years, Danish children had the right and obligation to receive education. There is good reason to celebrate, and it’s a fine stamp symbol. The stamp indicates also how to communicate with each other in writing. It is a key part of our school and our community,” said Education Minister Christine Antorini. The stamps have a value of 6.5 dollars and were published on 11th of June.

A commemorative stamp is an old tradition that elegantly ties up an anniversary that not only embraces the past, present and future. “In school we learn not just reading and arithmetic, we also learn to form communities – large and small. The stamps are helping to tell the history of Danish and thus something of what we have in common. The new school stamp is ideal if you want to send a greeting to someone who is preparing for exams, or who might need to start school after the summer, “says Morten O. Nielsen, Communications Manager at Post Denmark

Date of Issue : 20 January 2014

Finnish Post issued a stamp on Winter Greetings featuring Snowmen,  favorite of children..

The award-winning Finnish illustrator Janne Harju has designed a stamp depicting two snowmen, which is well suited for a variety of winter greetings.  Janne Harju has brought the snowman theme to life with the beautiful design.

This is how Janne Harju himself describes the feeling of the stamp, “The snowman and boy have spent a winter’s day on the sledging hill and also made snow lanterns. In the dark of night slowly floating snowflakes sparkle in the air. The crisp snow frost bites the snowmen's cheeks, but there is warmth in the air as they stop to admire the clear winter evening sky for the first stars.”
